It is not too much to say that Tbopi- as Murphy's proposition to supply HOQjivlUe Centre with heat by utiliz¬ ing the powerhouse surplus, is yuite the most interesting contribution to tite .alwA^s {toptilar question of com¬ munity economics that has been brought to public attention for some time.
: lAi a former village president who
• is familiar with the needs of Rock-
^.Tllle.Centre he is willing to enter into
a ptfbllc beating franchise and pay

/ Tbe-emiaent men of the engineering
world.long ago figured that the pro-
. per utilization of waste heat would
cut tb? i^tio;i's coal bill in half.
••^h«-f«el burned to produce the heat
necesaary to warm a dozen dwellings,
if consumed in one modern' heating
jlla^t under scientific direction would
Jieat thirty dwellings. This is being
done in many places. The time is
, not far dlBtaut wben the (community
, ^jfDoXBtove will do the cooking for a
„. neighborhood and that by organized
cooperative effort comparativ* «iase
.will take hte place of drudgery in the
home.
Community economi<;s are always to be found in the substitution of pub^ , Uc ot cooperative service for individ¬ ual serTlcs.
- The greater economics of the future win come from community cooperative organizations establishing zones • in wl^lch tfie pe^op)e themselveB will either provide their own public ser¬ vice or contract for it, community dealing with corporation direct.
One hundred women standing over one hundred cookstoves or gftH ranges and runnliig to one hundred small re¬ frigerators for the food supplies for jfi^edln^ ,pne hundred families; one <«..^b,uiidred women busy with individual po^ and pans and later washing and drying one hundred sets of dishes; one hundred furnaces and one hundred Individual piles of winter fuel -all ttiese may seem very proper Just now but unless the advancement which is apparent everywhere is vastly slower In the future than it has been in the recent past, all this will be changed.
. Mr. Murphy's proposition shows that even now mlnda are at work on the fen«ral aubject. And, while tbe mat ter Is in hand, why would It not be a ((ood idea for Freeport to begin to look into the large cjuesUon of heat. Ing its own village? Inquiry costs Uttle. It would at least be a start.
"There having been a difference in tlie size of tbe balolts at the Merrick eleCiUoa tbere was naturally a differ¬ ence in the size of the votes. The man with the larger got the most votea.

Freeport High School once again brings home the honors in the Inter¬ scholastic prize speaking contest, held undor the auspices of the Interscho¬ lastic I'rize Speaking Association at the I.Awrence School.
This association was formed in 1909 with a membership contemplating Huntington, Glen Cove, Lawrence and Freeport. In 1909 both prizes were won by students of Freeport- a boy aud a girl. Last year a Freeport boy wem. This year another boy—Stuart Cutler—has won. 1
The prize speaking contests are val¬ uable in more ways than one. They develop self possession and mental activity in partic-ular.

Ralph I'eters recently appeared be¬ for the House (Committee on railway mail pay to urge a definite system to be followed in paying railroads for carrying mails. The definite system mpans naturally an increase in pay. When the committee has the subject under consideration It might also in¬ quire why it frequently takes longer for a letter to travel between New- York ancl Freeport than it does from New York to Albany. Can It be that first class mail sometimes goes as freight'.'
Felix Iti-ifschnieder's ahle and c-lo- ciueni address delivered before the as- .seiiibled braves gathered around the I'eciuotian caiiiplire, on the subject of "The Hresent Difficulty with Mexico," should be followed at an early date by a heart to heart talk on "The Pres¬ ent Difficulty with the N'assaii .Ma- t-hine "
the public treasury.
In recent years the situation at Min¬ eola has been of a character to call for correction, although, thanks to im¬ proved public service, nothing to be compared with the old time condltloiw have been permitted to obtain. Still, there Is need of improvement, and It is pleasing to note that Sheriff Pet¬ tit is about to undertake it.
There is not now, and there ne»er has been, any excuse for the county assuming the financial and moral re¬ sponsibility of keeping a fluctuating number of abole-bodled never-works In ease at the expense of the tax¬ payers.
The tramp problem can be solved easily. Any man who is committed to the county jail to serve a period of ten days or a month just bei-ause : he is a non-working loafer, should be Immediately put to work on a ten- hour-a-day basis and made to produce each day a revenue in service equal to. If not In excess of his keep. '^This is Sheriff Pettit's idea. It will be endorsed by all good citizens. It will be approved by all who would es¬ tablish better conditions among the tramp class by making them realize the force of the Biblical saying that man shall earn his bread by the sweat ol his brow.
i;.\-Senator William H, Reynolds as¬ serts with regard to Ihe c-hannel con¬ troversy that there was no dredging agreement. It may properly be added that there was no dodging agreeinenl 1 c-ither. I
