GLORY IW THEIR GLOOW.

These Pessimists Love Misery Revsl In Wrstchedness. Vowing never to ndmit that passing Ume has given the world any cause to rejoice or that It has brought or ever can bring any good to the human race, LlverE 'Ol's "Pezzers' society" stands oot unique among the many organlza- tiona which have come into existence. Its members are true pessimists, and it appeara that the brotherhood was known originally as tbe Liverpool Soci¬ ety of Pessimists. Later the name was contracted to its more academic pree¬ ent form.
Curiously enough, the original mem< bers did not set out tb be preachers of gloom. Quite the contrary. They were amateur social reformers and dabblers In abstract science wbo met occasional¬ ly In an obscure coffee bouse. The ap¬ parent futility of their efforts to Im¬ press tbe world, which did not desire to be reformed in any way and which evinced no taste for their abstract sci¬ ence, caused the ilttle band to organtoe to take wbat comfort it might In pes¬ simism.
None of the members must be cheer¬ ful on pain of immediate expulsion. They are only optimists about one thing, and tbat is their pessimism. They revol In their gioom and are only happy In their unhapplness. The soci¬ ety Is well conducted. It has its rules and Its offlcers. The greatest event In the pessimist year is the annual "Pez¬ zers' razzle," when the members make a gloomy pilgrimage, which lasts throughout the night On thto occasion they go forth in costume as nearly ap¬ proaching sackcloth and ashes as pos¬ sible, and a dark, tdtoihai night to chos¬ en. Supi)er over—and there is nothing gloomy about the food—the tables are pushed back, the cheerful lamps are extlngutohed and tbe company sit round the flre smoking churchwarden pipes.
A Uttle later the hardier "Pezzers" embark on a gloomy tranip, which lasts throughout the night Down country lanes, across the fields and through the woods they go, never mtesing a grave¬ yard or anything really depressing. In the churchyard of a very ancient par- tob they halt aud remain for an hour or BO whiie Gray's "Elegy" to solemnly recited by the arch-Pezzer and other Pezzera less arch recite gloomy poems of their own or some one else's compo¬ sition.
If the night to unusually dark and they are able to lose themselves In con¬ sequence they are as happy as sworn pessimtots may permit themselves to be. It to then that the society's tordi bearer to allowed to exercise hto sole— and rare—prerogative of lighting up. The "torch" to a very anctont horn lan¬ tern stuck on the end of a pole and containing a pesslmtotlc candle. It to only to be lighted when the Peazers are utterly lost and cannot possibly flnd their way without lllumhiatloa, and when their bearings are ascertain¬ ed It to promptly extlngutohed.—Argo¬ naut
Alarto the Ooth. Alarlc tbe first of the barbarian kings who entered and sacked the Bter- nol City and the flrst enemy who had appeared before Its walls since the time of Hannibal, to said to bave re¬ ceived as the price Of bto departure from tbe city (during the flrst siege, In A. D. 406) 5.000 pounds weight of gold. 8.000 pounds weight of silver, 3.000 silken robes, 8,000 pieces of scarlet cloth aud 4,000 pounds of pepper. Ia order to fumtoh a portion ot the taa- som demanded by tbe Invader It be¬ came neceaaary to melt down some at the statues of the ancient gods.
