TUESDAY'S ELECTION,
If the elections throughout the Eastern States on Tuesday have any national significance and we firmly believe thoy do, it ia found In the indication that In 1916 the Demo¬ cratic party will be confronted with a united Republican party well armed and efficiently e(|uipped for a victor¬ ious campaign.
In New York .State the Republiian party and Its candidates won moat de- (I'.ive victories. The A.ssembly retains the sume Kepublican majority. Most of the up-State cities have elected Re¬ publican mayors. The overwhelming victory of Assemblyman Thotnis A. McWhinney In our Nassau county waa a most wonderful demonstration on the ,;art of the entire electorate of their confidence in his honesty, integ¬ rity and ability. .Majorities of ."),374 'are unheard of in this county and to Mr. McWhinney all honor is due.
Even its most ardent advocates could hardly have been surprised at the defeat administered "suffrage," after the adverse action in New Jer¬ sey where the cause had the powerful aid of President Wilson.
A multitude of conditions contri¬ buted to the defeat of the Constitu¬ tional amendments. There was an honest difference of opinion, there was plenty of misrepresentation

the proposed changes, and there was a good deal of petty pergonal poli¬ tics.
Thc general results of the election must be hailed, however, by all Re¬ publicans throughout the country, as a good omen with a direct bearing on national issue's.
____^ ""¦ DEAN OF WUTdt^ PROPHETS.
The results of Tuesday's election must be gratifying to Hon. George Wallace of Freeport, who seema to read the pulse of Nassau county bet¬ ter than many of our modern politi¬ cians. All through the month of Oc¬ tober he kept up the fight against the ponstitutlonal amendments and was practically alone. The vote nearly 8,000 In this county against the amendment, shows that he no doubt Influenced the people. About a inonth ago he told Assemblyman McWhinney that he would have over 4,000 major¬ ity for re-election. None of the other eetlmates during the campaign ex¬ ceeded 2,000. The result seems to be in the neighborhood of 5,374.
Surprise Mrs. Geller.
Mrs. Oeorge B. Oeller of Pine atreet was given a surprise party on her twenty-eight birthday anniver¬ sary by a number ot friends, both from home and nearby places. Ferry of Rockville Cen¬ tre, Mrs. Cook of Amityville, Mrs. Wild and two sons of Jamlca, Mr. and Mrs. Hanvey of Freeport, Miss Sarah Hults of Mineola, Mr. and Mrs. J. Van Nostrand of New York.
