Lad Goaa Through Faats te Delight of Naw York Doctor*—Som* of th* Vio- tim* Resorted to Use of Facuiti** When Cysts Wer* R*moved From the Brain—Symptoms Puzzled.
New York.—A dozen childreu were exhibited recently as wonders of mod¬ ern bruin surgery ut the Academy of Medicine at n Joint session with tlte New York Neurological society.
The heads of most of tbem bad been cut open, some ou one side ouly, some on both sides, by Dr. William Sbarpe and ills tisHlstunis nt Polyclinic hos¬ pital.
The children, who ranged iu age from two to twelve years, had suffered from spasmodi' paralysis, due to hem¬ orrhage inside tbo .sbMll. In many cases they had been seized with con- vulsioiw soon after birth. In a num ber of Instances tbe i)aralysls was uot much noticeable until «'ight months or HO after birth.
In cutting into (he heads of a large proportion of tho cases the surgeon found cysts, which hud to be removed. Sometimes Ibe symptoms had been puzzling, and in every case where a hemorrhage was suspected as the cause lit the .s.vmptuuis Ihe eye signs were investigated, and an exumlna- tion was mnde of thc spiuni fluid to corroborate the diagnosis.
Littlo ones who before tho knife ex plored thoir .skulls were incapable of speech or even of locomotion or move¬ ments of tlie firms were* able to talk aud laugh and run backward and for¬ ward and hold their arms up above their heads like normal children.
One of the children, a boy, who be¬ fore the operation couldn't walk or talk intelligibly, now goes .seven blocks to school twice a duy.
One little child thut formerly was always huddled up. with its head bent down almost to its feot, trotted proud ly before tbe surgeons, some of whom stood on chairs in order to got a better view.
In none of llie cases shown at the meeting bad there been any convul¬ sions or backward symptoms since tho" use of the knife. Out of over 170 op¬ erations, according to tho Polyclinic- professor, there were only twelve deaths, aud there were special reasons to account for them, including ex¬ treme emaciation in a nuniber of in stances when tho skull was cut open.
One of the children was a boy of twelve, who, from being u helpless paralytic, bad beon taught by Dr. Bess M. Mensendieck to use one muscle aft¬ er another until be has flnally got al¬ most as much control over himself us a professional athlete. The process of teaching him went on dally for moro tban six months.
The boy was stripped, and then on a mat he went through practically all the contortions of a wrestler, bending bis body backward, forward, sideways, twisting his trunk, raising his arms, flexing his legs and rising from the mat by the use ouly of his leg muscles.
Dr. Alfred S. Taylor showed two. young mon who had been restored to health by oponlng their backs aud re¬ moving sjiinul cord tumors.
Dr. C. Burns Craig, who served with the American ambulance service in Paris, told of the injuries to the periph¬ eral nerves produced by modern war¬ fare.
Pew soldiers survive bayonet wounds, added Dr. Craig. They die either from shock or loss of blood.

The czarina and the grand duchesses took a thorough course in tratnlug In the care of (he wounded soldiers. The czarina threw herself into the organ¬ ization of tbe hospital with enthusiasm and had it equipped in the most r>or- fect manner.
It was placed under tbe direction of the Princess t!e<lroyc, one of the bli;h- est nobility and wbo has won a na¬ tional repututiOM iu Russia as one of the foremost women do<tors. Tbe czarina, with bor daughters, works at the hospilal evcry day from !> a. m. to 2 p. in. and often later.
So lmi)ressod aro thoy with the seri¬ ousness and the humanity of their services that thoy often return In the evenings, and when they have danger¬ ously wounded patients they stay atl night. The czarina has also equipped a bath train and presented It to tho soldiers In the fleld.
