Town Clerk Gilbert Out¬ lines Remarkable Development
Editor Nas.-iau Post; Freeport, N, Y.
Dear Sir: —
Many times I am asked the ques¬ tion "When was the Town of Hemp¬ stead established'?" and believing it would be of interest to the readers of this paper I take opportunity to supply a little data concerning this interesting fiubject.
According to good authority the flr.st white man 'o set foot ou I,.ong Island (also known In the early records as Na«iau Island) were probably a boat'ii crew from Ilcnry Ilud.son's famous Ubip "The Half .Moon," who, in thc early part of .September 160:" lauded M Crmey I.shind to bury one of their comrades who had been killed by thc aativ^s whii.- (-\ploiiiii-: Illl' liay and, river.
Thl> l,)utcn made- ,'iettle'iiiciif on the westerly iiar» of the l.-dand as early ai? Ifiofi, and soon after, Ihc e.ist ene^ was occupied by Engli.'-;h collnles from New England. Hrooklyn. In January lliii2, it was decided by vote at a General Town Meeting thai Mr, Hii-ks, .Mr. Seainans and Itichara
Wlllitts were made choice of ami agree with all for to lay out the lands be longing to the towne, lying on thc north side. Eastward at Mattinacock and Westward at .Mathew Garrison'a Bay and they have allcwcd them by the Towne for the laying of it om ii-rf-(, penrf. ,-jn acre, for the greate; they are also to runne the line, and are to bee paid tdr their labour they bestow about it, the forementioncd line which they are to runne, is the line deviding betwixt Ov.ster Ray and Hcmpste.Td !ii>crtle« and the said Mr, Hicks, Mr, Seainans, and Richard Wlllits. are cniragcd tn runne yc sd line and lay cut the said foremention¬ cd lands inio particular alotnicnts by the first day of May next, and their nay is to be in ("orne. or In that which is eiilfivnlent to corne at price cur¬ rent, as it passeth from man lo man In the Towne.
The name Hempstead is undoubted¬ ly derived from a market town in Herlfordshlrc, England called Hemel- Hempstead, some thirty odd families according to tradition having emi¬ grated from .^aid Hemel-Hempstead to ^¦' tb'^'-'fie'd. Conn,, and thence to Hempstead.
In 1685 Ccipt, John Seaman, com¬ ing from th.' eastern end of ihc isl¬ and settled on what was subsequent¬ ly thc eastern boundary of the Hemp¬ stead purchase and secured title to more tlian 12 rum acres under thc Don- pan patent ulie-h said ae-re-asc be¬ came a part of thc Town of llonip-
.stead.
In 17S1 till' riricinal Town of Hemp¬ siead was di'vided into two townsbips. namely .North and South Hempstead S'lilth Heniti'^'eel in latter years w-as changed to the Town of Hcnpstcad or the town as it now stand-.
All of the records eone-crning thc Town of Hempstead North and South Hempstead, are in e.xisteiu-e with the- exception of tbe- very first volume cov¬ ering the years 1643 to 16,'a, which unfortunatelv were lost or believed to ha\f been lo! t It was in existence as recently as fifiy years ago, and i--- nicntioned b\ Ondcrdonk as "The Mmise- .-'ten lieiok" a liberal reward u-l- imlilielv (iffered for its return or f'lr infornialifin cemcerninir it, but un- ['irtnpatciv all (.fforts for Its recovery were fruitless
Trusting these matters as above outlined have heen of interest and ex¬ tending a cordial Invitation to anvnnc who -would be glad to view these early records at the Town Clerk's Offlce, I am
Very Respectfullv yours,

Let's see—^if a scuttle of coal costs a quarter
"npHAT same quarter buys about tno jiallons of A. SOGOiN^ Kerosene, which will keep a Perfec¬ tion Oil Heater going full blast for twenly hours. And not a cent's worth of fuel is \vasted. The Perfec¬ tion is on when you need it and olf-nvhen you don't.
"I guess that's cutting thp high cost of living! "
Buy less coal, and use a Perfection Oil Heater. Save motley aud keep warm. Burn
