NORMAL SCHOOL CAMPAIGN
As time passes, intt^rest In the movement for a Long Island State Normal School is steadily increasing. Further study of the situation only serves to strengthen the general impres¬ sion that the best interests of tlie school system of Nassau and Suffolk Counties require additional facilities for the profea- elonal training of teachers. Recent investigation shows that there are oniy 100 yonng people at present registered in the ten Normal Schools of the state from Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Like most educational institutions. Normal Sch(X>l8 are to a large extent local in character and draw a large pro¬ portion of students from tlieir Immediate vicinity, and If IOO students are now eent to the up-state Normal Schools, It Is very evident that the Normal School located upon I..ong Island would he called upon at once to make provision for two to three hundred students. For tiiese rea.sons everything should he done to secure an appropriation for the Long Island Nor¬ mal School. To carry on this campaign, however, it Is neces¬ sary that "Sinews of War" be provided. While friends of the movement have contributed toward the necessary expenses of the campaign, the committee should not be permitted to he- without all necessary funds. Therefore, the committee ur¬ gently requests anyone who reads this article, and who has not already contributed to the campaign, to sent remittance at once, large or small, to Arthur W. Brleriy, treasurer, Hemp¬ stead, L. I. If you are interested In this movement, show in this way to what extent you are interested, and cheer tho liearts of the committee by a generous response.
Arrangements are under way for a hearing at Albany in tlie near future, of which due notice will be given. Let us leave no stone unturned to secure the Normal School for Long Island-
CONG, mm' WASHINGTON LETTER
After the passage of the I'oHt Offlce Bill on Monday, the appropriation bill for government expenses was taken up. The tension over the submarine question culminated in the Senate when the Gore resolution was tabled hy a vote of 68 to H. This action on the part of the Senate was an evasion of the real issue. There are many members uf Congress who feel that in the at>6ence of deflnite information from the State Department as to the status of the subject to date, they are unable to de¬ termine the proper course to pursue.
In my opinion it matters less what the belligerents in the present conflict may desire and more what are the rights and duties of the American people. We may he divided as to the beet policy to be pursued for the welfare of America but that difference of opinion must not be predicated upon our desire to serve the Interest of any foreign power. With the viola¬ tion of international law and disregard of Hague Conferences by hoth sides in the struggle, is it not time for us, the great neutral nation, to formulate a policy without reference to the selflsh interests of other nations, and then when this policy is determined upon, let tbe world know that America wlil stand for it as a unit?
So far as any programme for preparedness on tbe part of the admii^stration is concerned, ali is quiet along tbe Potomac, despite the urgent demand of tlie people.
Cordially yours,
FREDERICK C, HICKS.
Fire Hoiue in Sangerotu Condition.
It has been found that the floor and beams of the house of Hose Company No. 3, situated in the Bayview section of Free- port, have become so decayed from resting upon the ground that it is extremely dangerous for horses. A proposition is to be submitted at tbe Village Election this year to spend 14,000 for a new house for this company, although tbe Fire Council was not aware of this condition wben tbe appropriation wa* submitted.
