(Hy Sijoclal Correspondent.) Thursday, August 19, W. H. Pat¬ terson will be a year younger than he was just a year from thla date. At least his lively actions, his sunny temper, his happy hopeful view of life, all seem to indicate that he is steadily growing younger while the rest of poor humanity go as steadily to the "sans teeth, sans eyes" stage. This flnishes the essay on life.
On that date the Mott Post ot the Grand Army holds its annual picnic and reunion at Point Lookout and the Post, on behalf of Commander Pat¬ terson, invites the Woman's Relief Corps and their families and friends to join in and have the time of their lives without money and without price. The commander issues this general order which the Poet counter¬ signs: "The only fellow that will have to pay anything is the grouch that won't have a good time. He must hand over everything but his grouch."

Suffrage activity in Merrick has been conflned lately to preparation for the big ahow, destined primarily to beneflt Flre Company No. 1, and, incidentally, of course, to advance the suffrage cause.
Amusement, however, is the main object, and there is sure to be plenty •of It.
Tickets have been selling at 2.5 cents for. adults and 15 cents for chil¬ dren, and there is every prospect of a good house.
Some unavoidable changes make it impossible to give the full list of at¬ tractions, but to those already pub¬ lished may now be added the nam^i of Mme. Bettinetti of Baldwin, whose lovely voice Is already known to a big circle of admirers.
Ice cream, with delicious cake made by the suffragists, who don't admit that good housekeeping is an enemy to good citizenship, may be obtained after the entertainment id over, and there wlll be dancing for those who care for it.

The commission on the government of Naaaau .county apointed by the board of supervisors under authority of a legialative enactment has been busily engaged in investigating gov¬ ernmental conditions in Nassau county since it wa sorganized laat March.
Although seven members of the commission were apointed last De¬ cember, one of the appointees refused to qualify and it was only last March that the commission met for organ¬ ization. The following members were appointed by the county board: Bronson Winthrop, Frank L. Crocker, George S. Emory, Wliliam G. Miller, Wlllard D. Straight, Frederick N. Watriss and Charles N. Wysong. At the organization meeting Bronson Winthrop was elected chairman by his colleagues on the commission.! Oeorge S. Emory waa subsequently elected treasurer.
The commission meets, each Satur¬ day morning at Mineola, and barring a few meetings when executive ses¬ sions are held, testimony is taken at tbe meeting. Some time ago an open letter was addresaed by the members of the commission to the reaidenta of the county, in which it was stated
