Just how it is possible to talk over wireless telephone and have the other half of tbe conversation reach your ear over tbe regular long distance tele¬ pbone wire, may have been like a Chi¬ nese puzzle to a vast percentage of the public who read of the accomplishment of such a seeming feat, recently, in connection with tbe testing of tbe Bell Wireless telephone. A diagram pub¬ lished In The Telepbone Review, tbe organ of the New York Telepbone Company, makes clear Just bow, and by whnt arrangement of telepbone wires and wireless apparatus. It was possible for Secretary of tbe Navy Dan- lel.s to talk to Itejir Adudral Usher of fhe New York N:ivy Yard, over the wireless, aud he«r over the wire, on the rnenioralile occasion when tbe flrst nafiil order.s were given over the wire¬ less telephone.
According to present indliatlons this Incident wlll he but the first act In a long and abundant history of the trans- miH:iion of naval orders by wireless, since one of the greatest values of the new Invention Is thc possllillity it af¬ fords of convcrsiiiK with ships at sea. The nhility to reach instantly any ship at any point on the hlKli seas, a fact which the Invention of the long dis¬ tance wireless telephone has brought Into tbe very near future, will be of In¬
calculable Imiwriance to the navy. The first use of thlf< invention by the de¬ partment for whom It is destined to mean so much, i^ described in The Tel¬ ephone Review, from which we quote:
At three o'clock on Kriday aftemoon, November .'>, Secretary Daniels, sitting at his desk In fhe .Navy Department building In Washington, read the fol¬ lowing order to Rear .\dmlral .Nathan¬ iel E. T'sher. rommnndant of the New York -Navy Yard, sitting In his offlce in Brooklyn:
"Report a.s soon as practicable after the arrival of the Ynr York how soon the repairs rcominendod on her can l>e completed."
The Commandant v(rt)ally acknowl¬ edged rpcelr)t of the order, and then the Secretary askp<l:
"How long before we can get fhe California off thc waysr'
"We hope to get her off in about thir¬ teen or fourteen month.s."
"Well, you wlll want another shlji In a year, won't you?"
"Yes, we wlil be glnrl ro have one In about a j'ear; we would like nne earlier, as we could prepare ahead."
"I will try to do that."
Tho voice of the S(Hretary of the .\avy traveled from his offlce hy wire to thc -Vavy wireless tower at .\rllng- ton, a distance of six and a half miles, then by Bell wireless telephone to the
wireless tower of the Western Electric Co»v43an>- oo Its building In New York, an nirlioe distance of 22.') miles, thence by wire again to the Navy Yard In Brooklyn, a distance of four miles, where It was heard and recognised by Rear Admiral Usher.
Rear Admiral Ujher spoke over the long distance telephone line to Secre¬ tary Daniels, a distance of approxi¬ mately 22.5 miles.
The Secretarj- was enthusiastic over the demonstratldti. and said:
"This is a miracle. We were wont to think mirai lea ended l.!>00 years ago. j'et herc 'to-d.ay Is this crowning mir¬ acle. Soon I shall be able to sit at my desk and give orders direct to com¬ manders (if ships uiion the ocean."
Mrs. Danii'ls. wife of the Secretary. talUcd wttli Hoar Admiral Usher, and. consefincntly. is the tirst woman ever to speiik o^ or the wireless telei>hone. She was fiill(jwe<l by young Krank Daniels, mkoi: fourteen, who Is. there¬ fore, thc flrst boy ever to speak over the new wireless fj'lepbone.
The wireless messaKe was also heard by fhe wireless operator at the Navy Y'ard In <'hurleston. South Carollnn. who was listening In, hy fhe oi)erator at the Oreat Lakes .N'av.-'l Station af Chicago, and also jif the Boston. Thlla deiphia and Fire Island Navy Yard Stations.
