The tragic death of Caroline .Mabel Uawkinfl I,.e Roy, aged *18, formerly of North Main Ptrcet, has shwiked her many frienda in Freeport. Mrs. Lo Roy was aevtrely hurned on Thurs¬ day last and died from her InjurleH on Christmas day, Ab MIsh Hawkln,s ahe waa widely known among thc younger set in this \ iilace a year ago. She was tbe daughter of former Lieu¬ tenant of Poiiee Uavid Hawkins.
She was married in .lune last tn Richard I^e Hoy of Klmhiirst and moved to 86 Kingsland avenue, that vlllage at the time of her maiirage. She was preparing luneheorf Thurs¬ day morning when she became dW.zy and fell against the gas stove igniting her garments. In her frenzy she ran to b^r parents home next door. If she had had presence c/ mind she could have extingul.shcd the flame by roll¬ ing along the floor, but the stiff breeze In the open caused the gar¬ ments to burn more freely and when ¦he reached her parents' home, her clothes were almost hurned from her.
Her father threw a coat about her and smothered the flames, but ap¬ parently too late. She was hurried to St. John's Hospital, Long Island City where she lingered until Christ¬ mas Day,
Mrs. LeRoy realized on Christmas Day that she would die and she asked ibp nurse to he taken home so that «b« could pass her few remaining hours with her family around. The request was granted and she passed away that ejvenlng.
MlBS Hawkins' wedding was sol¬ emnized in Holy Trinity Church Man-^ hattan, in June. Her father presented tbe couple with a three story home in which the tragedy occurred. The young bride was bom In Elmhurst. Tbe funeral services were held Thur3- day, the Rev. Dr. Jamea V. Chalmers, of Holy Trinity Cburch officiating. He spoke of the miles o' road, improved and the miles un¬ improved^ in the village, which is amazing in itself when we consider the sniall ainount of taxation which has been placed upon the people. He spoke of the village-owned water and electric li«ht plants, and went into a description of the same. His story of the history of the water plant reads like a story of the Arabian Nights, The-vUlage has a plant worth a quar¬ ter of a million, more than half of which had been paid for already, and tbe village itself had been taxed hut for $6,000 thus far, the balance being
