mi GOIMniT WHERE MEN DRUE WOMEN'S GUUMS
Woman Movement In High favor la Servia.
'Tbe femlntsatlon of Servia has no terrors for either men or women," ¦aya Mias Telena Losanioh, who is. the daughter of a Servian Minlater of Af- falas and in this country now. Mlaa Loeanlch is one of the leadera tn the woman movement in Servia and ex- plained Ita rapid growtli as partly due to the fact that women had heen obliged to prove themselves equal to every demand upon them ia these past three years of continuous warfare.
"Just wbat doea 'feminism' mean to Serviaq women?" MJs« Loaanich was gakai. "In the United States that phrase is to many women the terror that walketh at noonday. They think tt means free love and refusal to fctay ia their homee."
"Ah so!" said Miss Losanlca, open¬ ing her dark eyes wide. "I am glad you have told me that. I hart never known tbat any ono thought that alKxnt feminism. 'With us Sert>s It meane all that is good for women; all that Turk¬ ish role keeps women from heing and from having—I aosure you It is very earnest, very serious. It means flrst of all education and a chance to work.
MISS YELENA LOSANICH,
l..eader In the Woman's Movement in
Servia.
Do not forget that my country was ruled by the Turks for flve hundred years and when Servia flrst began her struggle for freedom in 1804 scarcely any eme, man or woman, could read or write. Tbe first need has been edu¬ cation. We have State schools for girls and boys from i»rimary to col¬ lege- These are coeducational. One third of the girls In the University, I should say, are taking scientiflc courses. Many are, what do you call It?—pharmacists? Yes. They have positione in all our municipal labora¬ tories, testing food supiplles, milk and water. They are analyzers in our custom houees. The best dentists in Belgrade are two sisters who are mak¬ ing money so fast they have bought a big, big house for fahemselves. In the Bulgarian war, when men dentists were away fighting, these sisters could not take care of all wbo wanted to come to tbem. Then we have women engineers—house construction engi¬ neers.—Oh! yes, you call that archi¬ tect. But no, it is more tban «ix>hi- tect, because there is a woman em¬ ployed 'by the Belgrade municipality who has laid out a grea^t park on the side of the hill running dawn to the Danube, just opposite Austria. Ah, It muet all be destroyed now." Miss Losanlch paused sadly. She herself has been a refugee in Nkh and SwU- serland and dM not see Belgraide'a de¬ struction.
"We have women doctors, although not yet a university of medicine for women. Just now we have new laws permitting women lawyers. Many women are clerks in banks and rail¬ roads and post offices. Most of the postal oBcials are women. My father and my hiroth«r4n-l»w say women are good bank clerks. A young friend of mln« is now studying to be a tyanker. Women, I have heard, are ^better post ofllce offlcials than men. Moat of the women In this class are married, so they feel the Importance of steady w»rk and are very regular and reli¬ able.
"But their children? Ought not thase women to ba In their homes?"
"Tou must know that Servian fami¬ lies are apt to live together In larger groups than here. There ia always some wMnaa, perhaps an old mother, who can stay home and oere for the children. They are never neglected, never. Tou see, the cotnmunal idea is natural te 0erbs. The farms are near¬ ly always mn by a numbar of people— »hlrty-«ye or forty, perbaips, living in oae house. Over theaa tbere la a mas¬ ter farmer and his wife, who is mls- treaa. Quits often there Is only a wom¬ aa at the head of the farm, and In war times, ef courae, womeo did every- tklaa, planting and harveatlBc all the erapa Wewan like such aa out-of- 4k>«r Ufa; H does not hurt tham to do agrlewltaral work. Thay are healthy aad viaaroua."
