SENATOR CALDER VISITS FREEPORT
Continued trom Page One.
way from Jamaica Bay through to Peconic Bay. He will use his in¬ fluence with the governor for the waterways as a means for the de¬ fense of the island and of the state. It will do so as a protection to our gunboats from attack from the ele¬ ments and from any enemy.
Senator Calder is the second sena¬ tor elected from Long Island, he pointed out. Rufus King, of Queens County, was the first.
"We are in a serious time, the most serious since the days of the Civil War," said the senator-elect. "We are sitting on a mine which mi.ilht blow up before the morning. God Almighty may save us from this clamity. It is the prayer of all that war may be averted, but it is without hardly a shadow of doubt that we will escape war. I am sure that the people of Nassau and Suifolk coun-
The Hempstead Inquirer says the Rockville Centre Herald "after an up and down career, mostly down, gave up the gost." Very likely the Inquir- er'.s editor wrote "ghost," but the printer knew that no "ghost" had walked the Herald's floor latterly, and that that was the reason for its sus¬ pension. "Gost" is perfectly proper, neighbor, in all eases where a news¬ paper ofllce has no true "ghost." The suspension of the Herald, by the way, was well received in R. V. C. circles. In Lynbrook it was a little different. Tom Box who called at the Herald offlce a few days before to stop his paper, its output of "pure democracy " not exactly meeting his views, and was beguiled into another years' sub¬ scription is said to have been visibly shocked on learning the neWs of the suspension. This is the only casual¬ ly recorded, though, of course, nobody knows what happened to the credit¬ ors. That's an ofBco secret always, or when a newspaper "busts."
In none of thc^e ycar.s that .Mr. Glynn held offlce did "Packy," as .Mr. McCabe is known by his fami^ liars, lack the sustenance that makelh the hungry belly full. Among other odd jobs wilh which he was entrusted was the clerkship of the State Senate and Conservation Commi.'^sioner. The pathway is still pointed out worn by "Packy" between the Grand Central Terminal, Delinonico's and Fourteen¬ th street in his solicitous visits to the Ti«er. Had he learned his New York outside that beaten track, ho wouUr have known more about Demo- iratic iiolities in the greal cily than is Implied in his charge of treachery. Were he as familiar with the country districts of his .State as with the slopes of .Albany he would have real¬ ized that the "treachery" that was the President's undoing in New York City was of a piece with the "treach¬ ery" that prevented the re-election of his friend Gov. Glynn as Governor of the State. In bolh instances, as practical politicians known, tha re¬ sult was the expression of a fervid religious conviction that neither can¬ didate ought to be further exalted by Protestants, so-called in one case, and non-protestants moved by wictehed Mexican conditions in the other.

Republican no less than Democra¬ tic politicians were entertained by the typewritten charge handed out for publication by Democratic leader McCabe of Albany County that but for "treachery in high places," Presl- den Wilson would have carried the State of New York last November. Presumably that ancient though hard¬ ly effete organization Tammany and Leader Murphy are tbe ones Indicted by the Albany man. Less attention will be paid to the charge in Demo¬ cratic circles than to the fact that its author, who has been out of a job since the Whitman admlnlatratlon took possession of Capitol Hill, has
