The Lemocratic leaders are mak¬ ing a desperate struggle to keep alive a remnant of tlie I'rogressive party for use as an auxiliary In the com¬ ing campaign but thc thinking men In the Progressive party and this means most of tlieni, have no inten¬ tion of serving again in a catsjiaw role to pull Lemocratic chestnuts out of tlie tire. The Republican platform suits them, tlie Republican candidates suit them and there is pli.'nty of room and a welcome for tiiem in the Re¬ publican party.
The nurses of the Seabury guber¬ natorial boom now predict the nomi¬ nation of their candidate on four tickets: Democratic, independence League, I'rogressive and American, (Overlooking the fact that the Ameri¬ can party was organized for the par¬ ticular purpose of supporting VVilliam Sulzer who might have scruples against turning it over to a Tammany candidate. Judge Seabury would need more votes than were cast by all four parties for Oovernor In 11)14 to eiiual the vote catst for Governor Whitman who was running only on the Repub¬ lican ticket. Governor Whitmans vote was CSO.TOI, The Democratic vote for Governor was 4 12,253; the Progressive, 4,">,i'>8ti; the Independ¬ ence LoagiK', 12,'i,2?>2: and the Amer¬ ican, 70,«.'),'), a total of f>,'..",,74t!, or more than :ui,oho less than the Re¬ publican. In 191,'), the Republican vote in the State showed a gain and the Republican enrollment for 101,"- 10 showed an enormous gain and amotiiiti'd to practically half of the entire enrollment of all parlies, Tlie total enrollment for all parti<'s was 1,847,082, while the Republican en¬ rollment was 72!i,7lo, Tlie enroll¬ ment of the Democratic, Progressive, Independence League and .'\nierican parties combined was only 707,,") IH. Without claiming for the deductions which these llgures .suggest any more importance than ordinarily attaches to midsummer politics they certainly do not liold out much comfort to tlie Seabury boomers.
It was natural that hoth tlie pris¬ oners at Sing Sing and many citinens of standing should join in the rejoic¬ ing over llie reiurn of Thomas .Mott Osborne as warden of the prison. An honest and decent man has been vin¬ dicated from charges of foul malig¬ nity, and honest and decent men ev¬ erywhere will rejoice at that vindi¬ cation, whatever they may think of (Jsi)orne's ideas of prison reform.
Rut -Mr, Osborne's return to the control of Sing Sing has a significance far exceeding its personal aspect. Whatever Sing Sing may be from tills time on, it will not be a prison,- lirooklyn Eagle.

One thing that seems fairly certain is tiuit those up-Stnte Democrats who •were estranged from tlie Tammany wing of the party by the scandals of lltKl and 1914 are going to he miglity shy about hustling for a Tammany candidate this year.
The swing of the political pendu¬ lum in this State has been steadily toward the Republican side since 1912, In I9i;i it gave the Republl- cans the Assembly, in 1914 It gave the Republicans the Assemhly, the Senate and all tlie State oflicere and In 1915 It gave them the Assembly by a vote larger than was cast in 1914. This year ought to see a clean swi. from presidential electors down.
It did not reiiuire the action of the Progressive national committee to show where the Progressive party was going, so far as New York State 1« concerned. A loss of ;!0.00 In the Progressive enrollment and a gain of 94,000 In the Republican enrollment last fall Indicated that the "back home" moveuie>nt was well under way nine months ago.
The United States Public Health Service asks do you:
1. Olean your teeth and then ex¬ pectorate In the washbowl?
2. Omit lunch to reduce weight and then overeat at dinner?
3. Go to the country for health and then sleep with your windows shut tight?
4. Wonder why you have earache and then blow your noee with your mouth shut?
AFTER THE WAR.
Judge Elbert H. Gary, chairman of the hoard of I'nited States Steel Cor¬ poration, in an article in System points out the situation which this country will have to face at the close of the European War. He says:
"Thc close of the war will not im¬ mediately check our prosperity, al- tlioiigli undoulitedly a large number of the men now working in munition factories will he compelled within a few months to seek other employ¬ ment. Our business is progressing at sucli a rate that its very momentum will carry it on for some tinii' to come, tint I do not ii\2.ice witli the stateiuciits which liavc been made tliat at the close of t4ie war we may expect in tills country a prolonged coniiiiiiancc of tlie great prosperity now existing,
"Our chief danger is in refusing to admit Iliat danger is ahead. We are going at a viry rapid rate. We may he going too rapidly. There is at present very great expansion, and possibly some Inflation.
"The soundest corporations arc not now dispersing the bulk of their great earnings in unusual dividends. They an- preparing a surplus for the jars and jolts wliicli will mark tiie stop¬ page of the present liigh speed run,
"Our producers, including our wage earners, wiil Hnd themselves in commercial antagonism with themotit persistent competition ever exper¬ ienced. ,MoBt of the foreign produc¬ ing countries, and probably iill of them, will be thoroughly protcct<'d hy tariff provision, and we should be eiiiialiy proi ected by reasonable and siiflicient laws. This (iiiestion of pro¬ tection oiii;ht not Io he one of poli¬ tics, for it is a (luestion of economics and good business; It affects all the people, and any protection which is given must be given with a view to the needs of all the pcopie.
"By the very nature of things we will always be compelled-to import cerlain ciiiuinodities. but we should so organize ourselves as to be prepar- I'd to pav for tiiese coiiiniodities not with gold hut wilh hnished goods. Ther<' has never iu the history of the world been so great a necessity for wise and disiiiicrosieii statesmanship or forloval nnd honorable conduct on the part of practical husiness men as at present,"
OPINIONS OF STATE EDITORS.
In the face of ^rave ecoiioiiiic prob¬ lems confronting this country as soon as the war closet^ and in the face of vast expenditures needed to linance a program of preparedness, is It safe to let thc Incompetent leaders of the Democratic parfV experiment any further in trying to run Ihe goverii¬ ment? This is the hig (luestion and i'. vast numbei' of thinking men in aH parties nre Roiiig to vote solely "n tills i«siie, Patcliogue Advance,
One of the most remiirkable fea¬ tures of a very remarkable presiden¬ tial campaign is the way in which .Mr, Hughes is bringing all party fac¬ tions and men of differing minds to h's support, Kirst he confers with a reactionary leader, then with a re¬ former. He discusses the campaign wilh a former .Moose and old line leader in the same conference. All are swinging into line in his support. —Watertown Times.
The United States needs Republi¬ can rule. It needs both the foreign and domestic policies for which the Republican party stands. It neede such a man as Hughes in the White House He is patriotic, wise, keen, prompt and unyielding. He will win back tho respect which the country has lost abroad and give It prosperity at home.—Amsterdam Recorder.
