COUNn OFFICIALS VISIT LYNBROOK
The Lynbrook Republican club on rburdday night, had a beefsteak din¬ ner and "get-togetber" rally ai tbeir rooma In tbe SImonson building. Nearly two bundred were present. In¬ cluding several of the county oOciaU and interesting talks were given bf A ntimber ot the guests.
Jeremiah Wood then called on tbe assemblage to sing America, and after this song said it was approp-iate at this time to hear from one of the "boys" wbo iiad b<'en on the l>oider. He called on Lieutenant Ronaldd, who responded. The Lieutenant oeid tbat as a member o( the club and a Republican, they wouH probably be interested in hearing bo^r the soldio/s voted. He told of the long balPir nsed and a book was supplied with the names of all the candidates.
Private Lockwood made a few re¬ marks expressing his pleasure at betng home again in Lynbrook, and then Chairman Wood called on Su¬ pervisor Smith, Raying that it waa well for citizens of the village tn meet their iounty offlcials and -be- c/nne better acqualwted with ihem. In presenting Mr. Smith, Mr, Wood declared him to he the best Super¬ visor Nassau had ever had.
The Supervisor after a few humor¬ ous remarks, expressed his pleasur? at having the soldier boys back again, hut said he wished they had done more aa Dewey did. When going In¬ to Manila harbor Dewey had cut th* cables and destroyed the Spanis'i fleet as he had started out to do ac¬ cording to orders. When you weic ordered to Mexico to get Villa dead or alive, .said Mr. Smith, he wished tiey had hal some one back of them who would give them proper support and let them accompliflh that ob¬ ject. Tho Town of Hempstead, said Mr. Smith, is proud of her soldier hoys and glad they did their duty so well and are again back in the coun¬ iy, Mr. Smith said he was always pleased to come to Lynbrook, to meet with the club and appreciated the fact that they seemed glad to see him. He waa particularly pleased to know that the club is loyal, working for Republican iirinciples and hoped for It much success.
County Judge Smith was next pre¬ sented an the man who the people of Nassau had elevated to their high¬ est position. .ludge Smith expressed hts thanks for the loyalty shown him in Lynbrook at the recent election and said he felt under obligation to the village. After a few storien which were particularly well recelvod the Judge said that now after elec¬ tion he hoped the people would not lose Interest in their offlcials, but feel tiiat they needed their support to properly perform their duties. If
they observe anything derimental to the welfare or the pubtic or the coun¬ ty, he hoped they vroold not hesitate to make tbe facts known to the offi¬ cials, for dnly by that metliod can the ofBeials know they are carrying out the will of the people. He wished tor the club the largest measure of success.
Cbairman Wood at this point wel¬ comed the Democratic friends who he observed In the gathering, and said he was pleased at their presence as it showed a fraternizing spirit that should permeate a small locality, and hoped for their presence at any sucb gatherings of the club in the future,
Joseph Foattr, collector of taxes, was presented by the chainnan. He told of the manifold duties of his offlce in the past month owing to the change in the laws of collecting taxes. From December 20 to 30, 20,- 000 letters conUinlng checks had been received and this besides the window calls had taxed his force to the utmost. The mail had been laid aside until it waa possible to handle it and Mr. Foster said this explained the delay of many in receiving re- celpfji. If any one feared a penalty for not paying their taxes in time. Mr, F'oster said he would take care of them If in the delayed mail. The force had worked day and night for weeks and Mr. Foster said this was the second time since December 1. when he had left the offlce before 11 p, m. He had that day sent out to the various school treasurers $538,- 608,08 collected as the school tax,
Karl Bennet. County Comptroller, was next presented as the "watch dog of the treasury," and he spoke of tho effective wo,'-k that could be per¬ formed in a campaign by a club as well organized a.s the Lynbrook Re¬ publican club. At the beginning of a canv.-iss such as the coming Spring campaign, said Mr, Bennett, there is always a class of people who are out and frying to get in and who are anx¬ ious to champion the rights of the people, and he very much doubted their sincerity as they arc irsually looking for their own interests, Wifh tho party going into a campaign witn loyal organizations such as the gath- «ring ho was addressing, declared Mr, ncnnett, there c-an bo no ques¬ tion of the result.
The gathcritig broke up at ten- thirty after c program by the mu¬ sicians.
