Ing year, according to entomologists of the United Statee Department ul Agriculture. The caterpillars ot the brown-tail moth spin a web In the fall which remains on the tips of the twigs and branches during the win¬ ter. These webs should be cut and burned so that Injury will not be caused by the caterpillars the follow¬ ing summer. Particular attention should be given to webs of this insect on trees which grow around dwell¬ ings or in orchards.
The apple, pear, cherry, oak and willow are among those which are favored by the brown-tail moth cat¬ erpillars. In order to minimize th« damage which is likely to reault, as much time as possible should be de¬ voted to cutting and burning worth¬ less or seeding apple trees and wild cherry trees and brush. If this ia done along the roadway.s and fences, the appearance of the region will be greatly improved. Care should be taken to protect pine and other conif¬ erous trees, and hickory and ash .should not be cut as they are not favored for food either by the cater¬ pillars of th egip.sy moth or by those of the brown-tail molh. A general clean-up such as has been mentioned will preaily as.sidt in controlling this Insect. Thc oak is a favored food of the brown-tail moth and of the gipsy 'moth, and wherever it is po.s8ible to cUminatu oaka less annoyance from ' these pe.sts will be experienced.
In cutting wood in the winter for the purposes of fuel, the farmer would do well to select and (ut trees which are favored as food by these insects. In this way he will not only secure the fuel which he desires, but will at the same time decrease the food supply of the pests mentioned. It is needless to say that in cutting wood for fuel, all sickly or diseased trees should be selected so that the siana that remains will be healthy and vigorous. Each owner must make the selection for himself, but a great I al can be accomplished by plan¬ ning the work a Ilttle in advance so that the necessary amounts of fuel can be obtained, the preferred food plants of these insects reduced iu number, and the condition of the woodlot Improved.
The gipsy moth occurs in the egg stage during the winter, and much valuable work can be done in bring¬ ing about its control by treating the egg masses with creosote, applied with a brush. This destroys the eggs so that the ne.xt brood of caterpillars is reduced.
For the information of residents of the distrirt infested by the gipsy moth and the brown-tail moth, it should be paid tliat this area has been placed under quarantine by the Fed¬ eral Horticultural Board and that nursery stock and living plants can¬ not be shii)ped outside the area unless the trees of plants have been ex¬ amined by an authorized Inspector. The same products, as well as Christ¬ mas trees, forest products, and stone and quarry products, cannot bo shipped outside the area Infested by the gipsy moth unless they have been Inspected and certified to be free from this insect. The purpose of this quar¬ antine is to prevent these insects from becoming estaolished in other parts of the United States.
Webs of the brown-tail moth which are present on the trees during the winter, and egg clusters of the gipsy moth which may be on trees, cord- wood, lumber, boxes, crates, or other containers which arc stored near in¬ fested trees, are likely to be shipped long distances. For tbis reason, all owners should be particularly care¬ ful to keep their grounds free from these insects, and, in case shipments of any kind are to be made, to notify fhe nearest inspector so that there
special care on grounds from which wood or plant products are to be shipped. The work on these insects which is being carried on by the de¬ partment is directed from the branch offlce of the Bureau of Entomology, 4 3 Tremont street, Boston, Mass.
