The Long Island Railroad is doing all in its power to wipe out of Monday's papers the records of automobile ac- t'idents at grade crossu*gs. An irreverent Goat. The Welsh fusileers were presented by Queen Victoria with a goat, wlilch. after several years of exemplary con¬ duct, fell into bad ways. Its culminal ing act of insubordination oecurred when the regiment was quartered tit Wrexham, and one flne summer even- lug after mess tbe officers were stroll¬ ing about smoking and enjoying the fresh air. The colonel stooped down to push 111 the end of his trousers struii. and the gout, whicb happened lo be close by, found the temptntlou Irresist¬ ible. He charged fiercely and butted hia commanding oflBcer ngainst an ad jacent wall with such force thnt both his e.ve3 were blacked and hLs face was otherwise damaged. By this es¬ capade the goat earned the title of "the Rebel," and only the good record of his early yours of service saved hlui from being drummed out—London Ex press.

THE BANK VAULTS OF
THE NATION.
The Bank a Financial Power Htfusa to the Community.
By Peter Radford.
Ono of the greatest opportunities ftt the business life of the nation lies In practical co-operation of tho coun¬ try banks with the farmer in building agriculture and the adventure is laden witb greater possibilities than any forward movement now before tbe American public.
A few bankers have loaned money, to farmers st a low rate of interest, and ofttlmes without comtiensation, to buy blooded livestock, build silos, fertilize tbe land, secure better seed, bold their products for a betetr mar^ ket price, etc, Tbe banker in con¬ tributing toward Improving tbe grade of livestock; the quality of the seed smd the fertility of the soil, plants In the agricultural life of the community a fountain of proflt, that, like Tenny¬ son's brook, runs on and on i,'orever. Community Progress a Bank Aaiet. The time was when money loaned on such a basis would severely test the sanity of the banker; such trans¬ actions would pain tbe directors like a blow in the face. A cashier who would dare to cast bread upon waters that did not return buttered side up in time for annuul dividends would have to give way to a more capable man. Thia does not necessarily mean that the bankers are getting any better or that the milk of human kindnesss is being imbibed more freely by our finan¬ ciers. It indicates that the bankers are getting wiser, becoming more able fin¬ anciers and tlie banking Industry more competent. The vision of the builder is crowding out the spirit of the pawn¬ broker. A light has been turned on a new world of investment and no usurer ever received as large returns on the investment as these progres¬ sive bankers, who made loans to uplift Industry. The bankers have always been liberal city builders, but they are now building agriculture. A Dollar With a Soul. It is refreshing in this strenuous commercial life to find so many dol¬ lars with souls. \Vhen a dollar is ap¬ proached to perfiorin a task tbat does not directly ylsMJtha highest rate of interest, we usually bear the rustle of tbe eagle's wings as it soars up¬ ward; wben a dollar is requested to return at the option of the borrower, it usually appeala to the Goddess of Liberty for its contractural rights; when a dollar is asked to expand in volume to suit the requirements of industry, it usually talks solemnly of its redeemer, but soul material has entered into the vaults of our banks and rate, time and volume bave a new basis of reckoning in so far as the ability of some of the bankers permit them to co-operate in promot¬ ing tbe business of farming.
God I Almighty's Noblemen. These bankers are God Almighty's noblemen. Heaven lent earth tbe spirit ot these men and the angels will help them roll In place the cornerstones of empires. Tbey are not philanthropists; they are wise bankers. The spirit of the builder has given tbem a new vision, and wisdom has visited upon them busi¬ ness foresight.
The cackle of the hen, tbe low of kine and the rustle of growing crops echo in every bank vault in the nation and tbe shrewd banker knows that he can more effectively increase bis deposits by putting blue blood in the veins of livestock; quality In the yield of the soil and value into agricultural products, than by busi¬ ness handshakes, overdrafts and gaudy calendars.
Taking the community into part¬ nership with the bank, opening up a ledger account with progress, making thrift and enterprise stockholders and tbe prosperity of the country an asset to the bank, put behind it stability far more desirable than a letterhead bearing tbe names ot all the distinguished citizens ot the com¬ munity. The bank is the flnancial power house of the community and blessed is the locality that haa an up-to-date banker.
POLITICAL PJYER MEETIII6S
It is a sad day for Christianity when the churoh bells call the communicants together for a political prayer meet¬ ing. Sueb gatherings mark the high tide of religious political fanaticism, put bitterness into the lives of men; fan tbe flames of class hatred and de¬ stroy Christian Influence in the com¬ munity. The spirit actuating suob meetings is anarchistic, un-C|irisUiko and dangerous to both church and state.
The success of ttae nation is in ttao han^s lA the farmer.
