Bethpage Families Win
With Bretton's Bowl ' 05
Both teams pose for a picture before the true competition begins.
On December 11, the Bethpage
Community Foundation held their
Annual Bretton's Bowl 2005. This
was the 18th anniversary of a game
that helps out so many families
during the holiday season and all
year long. This year's game pitted
the brave Bretton's team against the
athletic gents of Easy Direct
Quotes. com and ended up in a 0- 0
dead heat. While the competition
was tough the cold temperatures
proved to be even more competition
for the crowd of folks who came out
to be a part of this traditional
Bethpage event.
Money raised from his game and
through the generous donations of
so many businesses and residents
helps families right here in our own
community all year long. Although
money is still being collected over
$ 25,000 has been donated so far
and that number is rising daily.
On hand for this year's chilly event
was Pastor Sal Bennardo of
Assembly of God Church, Legislator
Edward Mangano who offered
congratulations to Gary Bretton,
fame founder, and the entire
community of Bethpage for coming
together to help fellow residents.
Mary McCaffery threw out the game
ball and offered congratulations as
well. The Vietnam Veterans of
America Nassau County Chapter 82
provided the color guard and year
after year come out in support of
this worthwhile effort.
Special thanks to Cablevision,
B. K. Sweeney's and the Bank of
New York for their support of the
game as well as to all of the other
merchants and residents of
Bethpage who helped to make this
event successful.
The Gift of Love
Maura McGovern, age 9, donated her hair to Locks of Love
for Christmas. Locks of Love is a not- for- profit organization that
provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under
the age of 18 with medical hair loss. Her hair was cut by
Giovanna Hair & Nail Salon in Massapequa. Owner Giovanna
Caruana, a Bethpage resident, cut and styled Maura's hair.

DealingWiihLoss\ j
of a Loved One
The holidays can be a painful
time for people who have lost a
loved one during the year. Some
respond by continuing family
traditions, while others choose to
change them.
" Some people are OK with the
' empty chair' kind of approach,
where the memory of that person is
invited to the occasion, so to
speak," Hogenauer said. " Other
folks need the opportunity to
change the venue so the empty
chair isn't there."
A longtime hospice nurse and
the founding clinical hospice
director at Comprehensive
Community Hospice of the Parker
Jewish Institute in Lake Success,
NY, Hogenauer offered some ideas
for people dealing with a loss during
the holiday season:
- Don't judge how others grieve.
- Don't be embarrassed to get
some help.
- Change your traditions if it
makes you feel better.

Town of Oyster Bay
Councilman
Angelo Delligatti
Receiver Stefanich Reminds Residents
To File For Property Tax Exemptions
speaking, breathing, learning or
working. The requirements to qualify
are based on the person's disability,
ownership, residency and
occupancy status, and income.
Persons with incomes less than
$ 32,400 can qualify tp receive an
exemption from 5% to 50%.
Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes
James J. Stefanich reminds homeowners
wishing to receive exemptions
on their 2006 - 2007 School
and 2007 General taxes that they
must file with the Nassau County
Department of Assessment before
the January 2, 2006, deadline.
Exemptions, resulting in* property
tax savings, are available to qualified
residents for the following categories:
Basic STAR ( New York State
School Tax Relief) program provides
an exemption from school
property taxes for owner- occupied,
primary residences. Section 425 of
the Real Property Tax Law authorizes
this State- financed exemption.
Enhanced STAR ( New York State
School Tax Relief) exemption is
available to senior citizen homeowners
who are 65 years of age or
older during the year in which the
exemption takes effect, and whose
annual income does hot exceed
$ 66,050. Senior citizens whose
annual income exceeds $ 66,050 will
still be eligible for the Basic STAR
exemption.
Senior Citizen exemption provides
a tax savings for individuals over
the age of 65, whose income is less
than $ 32,400. To participate and
receive this tax savings ( between
5% and up to 50% reduction on certain
county, town and school district
property taxes) specific qualification
criteria must be met.
Veterans Exemption is for those
individuals who rendered service to
their country during wartime. This
exemption applies to county and
town taxes, but not school or special
district taxes. The eligibility to
receive this exemption and amount
to be exempted depends upon the
time, duration and type of service,
along with other criteria.
Gold Star Parent Exemption is
available for the parent of a child
who died in the line of duty while
serving in the United States Armed
Forces during a period of war, as
defined in NYS Real Property Tax
Law.
Partial Exemption for Physically
Disabled is granted to those persons
who qualify, and is equal to
the amount of any increase in value
of property attributable to improvements
made for the purpose of facilitating
and accommodating the use
and accessibility of the property.
Partial Exemption for Persons
With Disabilities and Limited
Income is'available to eligible applicants
who have a physical or mental
impairment, not due to current
use of alcohol or illegal drug use,
that substantially limits that person's
ability to engage in one or more
major life activities, such as caring
for one's self, performing manual
tasks, walking, seeing, hearing,
Hflme Improvement Exemption is
an eight- year decreasing exemption
on alterations, reconstructions or
improvements that increase the
assessed value of a one or two
family home. In the first year, 100
percent of the assessed value of
the improvement is exempt. In the
second year, 87.5 percent, in the
third year, 75 percent and so on.
Certain eligibility requirements must
be met to participate in this program,
j
1s* Time Home Buyers may apply
for and receive a partial real property
tax exemption. The maximum
exemption is offered over five years,
starting with a 50 percent exemption
the first year and phasing to 10 percent
in the fifth and final year.
Homebuyers are subject to certain
price and income limits set by the
State of New York Mortgage Agency
( SONYMA).
Firefighter and EMT Exemption is
available to eligible firefighters and
ambulance workers. Up to 10 percent
reduction in the assessed
value of their property can be
obtained to volunteers who have
served at least five years in a Town
of Oyster Bay Fire Department in
which they reside. This exemption
only applies to the Town portion of
the tax bill. Certain eligibility
requirements must be met to participate
in this program.
Receiver Stefanich advises homeowners,
who are interested in
obtaining an exemption, to contact
the Nassau County Department of
Assessment at 571- 2490, where
they can obtain additional information
and applications. They may
visit the Assessor's office at 240 Old
Country Road, 4th floor, Mineola,
New York 11501- 8402.
Any resident or organization interested
in obtaining a free brochure
describing the STAR, Senior, or
Veterans exemption can pick one
up at Town Halls North ( Oyster Bay)
and South ( Massapequa), the
Department of Public Works
( Syosset) and at major park facilities,
or call or write to the Town of
Oyster Bay Public Information
Office, Town Hall East, 54 Audrey
Avenue, Oyster Bay, N. Y. 11771
( 624- 6380).
Receiver Stefanich noted, " I want to
make sure that every resident who
is eligible, be they a senior citizen,
veteran, new homeowner, volunteer
firefighter/ EMT, person with a disability,
or person renovating /
improving their home, take advantage
of the available exemptions."

Central Park Historical Society Update
December 2005
November Program - Pastor
Mary Crump invited the Central Park
Historical Society to hold our annual
harvest celebration in the historic
United Methodist Church on
Broadway, Bethpage.
Pastor Crump traced the
Methodist coming to the new world,
from England, on to establishing the
first Methodist Episcopal Church in
our area, founded by Joshua Powell
( great, great grandson of Thomas
Powell) in 1835. The Farmingdale
Powells' were Quakers while the
Bethpage Powells' were
Methodists. The location of the first
church in our area was in Plainedge
on Wantagh Avenue and Central
Avenue. There was a second
Methodist Church, members mostly
German, located on the north side of
the Hempstead Turnpike between
Stewart Avenue and Wantagh
Avenue during the time period of
1845- 1873. Services were
discontinued before 1893 and the
Lyceum Cemetery is all that remains
today.
In 1920 the worshipers, mostly
from Central Park, had the church
moved from Wantagh Avenue to its
present location on Broadway,
Bethpage. Over the years the
church had been renovated to
support the growing needs of a
growing community. Pastor Crump is
reaching out to the community and
our members for any information you
could share, regarding the United
Methodist Church or the Methodist
Cemetery, in an effort to put
together the valued missing pieces
of the puzzle regarding its history.
We thank Mary Kuhlke and Mary
Jane Pendl for the great job, as
usual, of decorating and setting the
mood in the fellowship hall to reflect
the beauty of the harvest. It was
great to see Pam Pendl Hearn who
joined us for the evening all the way
from Washingtonville, N. Y.
I received the following
correspondence from Jack Gifford,
who now lives upstate New York,
regarding our November program
and concerns about the Methodist
Cemetery.
" I wish I could be there with you
later this month when you meet at
the Methodist Church. That was our
family's church from about 1924 until
my father died in 1978. When I was a
little boy the church had an itinerant
pastor who came from Hicksville. I
don't remember his name. I
attended Sunday School ( with
perfect attendance for 15 years in
succession and I still have the pins
to prove it) and remember many of
the Christmas Services and
pageants we had. Some of the other
family names I remember from my
time were: Altman, Ebisch, Gibbs,
Sparke, Von Essen and Whaley.
I was especially pleased to see
that an effort is being made to
spruce up and renovate the
Plainedge Cemetery ( now known as
the Methodist Cemetery) as the last

time I saw it several years ago it was
quite overgrown particularly in the
back where my ancestors ( the

Pastor Crump also addressed the
concerns for the Methodist
Cemetery and the progress that is
being made. A small group of
enthusiastic people assembled,
rakes, clippers, mowers, trimmers,
and bags in hand, for the fall clean
up. We also had the help of
Stephen Albertson doing his
Community Service in preparation to
receive the sacrament of
Confirmation next year at St. Kilians
Church in Farmingdale. All lent their
strength, enthusiasm, and
commitment to maintain the Historic
Methodist Cemetery.

Christmas Program -
Bethpage High School -
December 21 & 22, 1942 - We
came across a program for a
Christmas presentation by the
children in the Bethpage School in
1942, and I thought a trip back in
time would be fun. I will outline the
events, and I am sure it will bring
back some happy memories to
many.
There was participation of the
Primary Glee Club, Grades K- 3; The
Rhythm Band, Grades 1 & 2; the
Junior Tonette Club, Grades 4 & 5;
The Girls Glee Club, Grades 6, 7 & 8.
They all sang traditional Christmas
songs. Unfortunately, they did not
list the names of the children
participating in the above in their
program.
June Holzmacher performed a
toe dance and Margaret Dickinson
and Audrey Benkert did a tonette-duet
of " Oh, Come All Ye Faithful"
and " Jolly Old St. Nicholas."
Then there was the performance
of Scrooge's Christmas, an operetta
in two acts. Listed below are the cast
of characters ( the spelling of the
names are from the mimeographed
program): Ebenezer Scrooge -

EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK
By Linda Mangano
Merry Christmas. Happy Chanukah. Happy Holidays. Three simple
salutations yet they have sparked tpiite a hit of controversy over the
past few weeks. It seems that in the quest to be politically correct
neither phrase is making the grade. Arguments have sprung up all
across Long Island as to the justification of seasonal displays and a
town ceremonies even came to a crashing halt as a featured guest
speaker, who happened to be a member of the clergy, was told his
words were too spiritual in nature for the intended ceremony
What is going on? It seems crazy to me that arguments are taking
place over holiday greetings and messages. What worries me even
more, however, is that I think many have forgotten the meaning of the
season. This time of year used to evoke cheer and friendliness. People
seem to be a little nicer around the holidays. More generous. More
festive. Where has that gone? Have we replaced that with bickering
over the proper greeting?
Obviously, the true significance of the Christmas holiday is the
birth of Jesus Christ. It is an extremely meaningful day for Christians
everywhere. It is the day their Lord and savior was born. Chanukah
celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over the forces of Antiochus
and the recapture of the temple after a three- year battle. It is a way to
remember the struggle the Jewish people faced. They are real holidays
with real significance and neither should be made to be generic or
trivialized. Yet we say happy holidays simply because these two
special holidays take place during the same time of year and it is a
way to extend a greeting without knowing what holiday an individual
celebrates.
In addition to the significance of these two holidays various
traditions and customs have become a part of the celebrations.
Christmas trees, Santa, and the manger have long been a part of the
Christmas tradition. Menorahs and dreidels are all part of how
Chanukah is celebrated. Of course gift giving is a tradition of both
holidays. So to me it is fine to call it a Christmas tree a Christmas tree
and equally acceptable to identify a menorah as a menorah. It is also
appropriate to say Merry Christmas on Christmas and Happy
Chanukah during Chanukah. Nothing offensive. Nothing wrong or
disrespectful. They are not nor will they ever be generic holidays and
they should be remembered for each of their true significance.
Aside from their historical and religious meaning there is something
magic about each of the holidays and that is what I am also afraid we
are losing sight of Christmas and Chanukah have always had the
ability to allow each of us to think with our hearts. They allow us to
remember childhood traditions, aromas of mouth- watering meals and
above all allow us to unleash the child that lives inside us all.
Christmas and Chanukah embody a season that opens our eyes and
our hearts to others who have less as well as a time that we truly stop
to reflect and give thanks for all that we have been blessed with. It is a
time when families gather together. A time when stories of year's past
are told and new memories are made. Yes. it's Christmas trees, lights,
and Santa. It's menorahs and spinning dreidels. It's all that and it
should be.
In our quest to be politically correct we now think it is better to
glaze over the significance of each holiday as opposed to embracing it.
Well, not for me. Christmas is Christmas. Chanukah is Chanukah and
they are both special and meaningful. We all need to stop being
offended and remember what is truly important. And while each
holiday has been commercialized to some extent, no one can deny the
joy in seeing the happiness on a child's face as they open a present on
Chanukah or eagerly await the arrival of jolly old St. Nick. That, my
friends is the magic. It's the happiness and what it does to each of us
that truly is the gift we receive. The splendor of Christmas and
Chanukah feeds our souls with a spirit that allows us to remember,
allows us to reflect and allows us to give of ourselves.
We are fortunate here in Bethpage. We come together as a town
and celebrate together. It doesn 7 matter what your holiday is or which
light, ( hose on the Menorah or those on the Christmas tree, that von

gaze up at. We are together celebrating, giving and caring for each
other as a community. I am so proud of that and so thankful for that.
We as a community have not allowed differences to divide us, yet those
differences have made us stronger and have made us a true example of
what community means. That, in and of itself is a wonderful gift that
we all have given each other.
So to all our readers, we say Merry Christmas and Happy
Chanukah. May you be blessed with all of the happiness of this
magical season. May you enjoy your holiday in the company of family
and friends and may you take time to remember, give with your heart
and care for each other. Oh, and make sure to save some room for
dessert!
A VERY SPECIAL REMINDER
As you sit down with family and friends at your dinner table this year
please take a moment to remember and thank all of our brave men and
women of our armed forces who will not be eating dinner with their
families this holiday season. Their sacrifice is a gift they give to each
of us and we thank them, respect them and honor them all.

Return for Breakfast Forum
CBS Holds Winter Concert
Bethpage High School Class of 2005 students return to offer
some insight to current senior class members on what college
life is really all about ( Photo by Kris Melvin- Denenberg, Syntax
Communication Group).
Moving onto college can be a
puzzling time for many young
adults. However, for Bethpage
High School Senior class
members, the challenges ahead
become less intimidating and
more exciting with the help of
former classmates.
Now an annual event, the
Bethpage High School Alumni
Breakfast Forum acts as more
than just a reunion. When
members of the Bethpage High
School Class of 2005 recently
visited home for the holiday,
more than 35 former students
eagerly accepted the invitation to
speak with current senior class
members about their new
experiences in continuing their
education.

The fond memories of holiday
programs, holiday cards, the tree
with the familiar ornaments,
traditional meals with wonderful
aromas, going to church, holiday
songs and stories, the wish for a
white Christmas, the lighting of the
Menorah, giving and receiving of
presents, and all the hugs. A time for
family, friends, and all who have
crossed our path and have become
a part of our life. Truly a season of
the heart. Wishing you all the
miracles and wonder of this beautiful
Holiday Season!
Condolences - The Central

by the passing of Patricia Jones. Our
sympathy to her husband Bob her
family and friends.
By: Ann Albertson
Students now look forward to
this tradition as a source of
valuable information. Senior
class members had an
opportunity to submit questions
to the recent Bethpage alumni
about what life is really like after
graduating high school.
Questions this year focused on
preparing for college life as a
resident and commuter, as well
as balancing classes, work, and
fun. Students from Colgate,
Cornell, C. W. Post, and many
more schools shared their
thoughts about declaring a
major, selecting classes, making
new friends, and even surviving
college cafeteria food.
With the aid of the Alumni
Breakfast Forum, the Class of
2006 will feel confident and
prepared where ever they
choose to continue their
education.
Music was in the air at Central Blvd. School as students participated in
their Winter Concert. The chorus, band, orchestra, and recorder club
treated the jam- packed auditorium to tunes of the season.
Congratulations to ail those who participated and made the evening so
enjoyable. Congratulations as well to the CBS music department for
their dedication to the CBS students.
We didn't buy a new location...
we earned it.

man in an average American small town was sitting in his living room on
c^ As the evening of December 24. As he watched his wife and family put the
final touches on the tree and fill the bottom with gifts he reflected on the peace,
happiness and tranquility of the night. He went to his window and watched the
soft snow cover everything and make it look pure and peaceful as well.
He saw some homes decorated for Christmas and others with the Chanukah
Menorah displayed in the window. He then saw an odd sight, two soldiers in full
gear standing out in the cold. He ( Went out and invited them into his home to
warm up and join in the evening meal his family had prepared.
They thanked him but refused the invitation because they were on duty. A little
confused he asked why. They said that like their Great Grandfathers who
defended our great nation in WW], their Grandfathers who did the same in
WWII, Uncles in Korea and their Fathers in Viet Nam it was now their turn.
They explained that protecting the rights and freedoms of all Americans always
is a soldier's duty, wherever needed.
They then asked him a question.! Why have we fought for freedom of tyranny
and religion in all these other places around the world and it is not, by some
peoples views, proper to wish our - Christian friends a Merry Christmas and our
Jewish friends a Happy Chanukah? The man thought for a moment. Realizing
the truth to what they said he turned to reply but they were gone. This time to
Iraq and other areas in the Middle East to again protect us here at home. The
man then went to all the homes on his block and offered a " Politically Incorrect"
Merry Christmas or Happy Chanukah and asked each friend in their own way to
include our brave Soldiers around the world protecting us in their prayers.
