broke as the Bayville Jets put up an
all air attack which was stopped
when Anthony ( NAILS) Coletta
made his third interception in three
games. The offense wasted little
time with Danny Ligowski throwing
to Zachary Licht who fell into the
crowd of defenders and when the
dust settled, Zachary with sheer
determination came up with the
football for the second score of the :
game. Joe Mongan, Nick Kelly and
Brendan Hoffman stepped up on
defense and made some great
stops to extinguish the Jets hopes.'
While the defense had the Jets
baffled the Falcons offense led by
coach Brian Limpert ran the " hook
and ladder" play to perfection. It
went like this, Jimmy Limpert passed
the ball to Zachary Licht on a short
hook, Zachary then pitched the ball
to Danny Ligowski who ran all the
way to the " big house" and the
crowd went absolutely nuts! Time
was on the side of the Falcons who
refused to give the ball back to the
Jets with several key first downs with
catches by Ryan McManus, Sean

the end of the game, the fans
stormed the field and the team
captured the Long Island crown.
The party was brought back to

coaches Brian Limpert and Tom

watched in joy as the kids discussed
the game with their huge trophies
and the memories that each kid will

October Program - A very
interesting slide presentation was
given by historian and author, Jeff
Richman, on the Historic Green-
Wood Cemetery, located in
Brooklyn, N. Y. We can always count
on a very enthusiastic and
knowledgeable audience when we
have a program pertaining to
Brooklyn.
The Green- Wood Cemetery was
founded in 1838 as the third rural
cemetery in America, and
recognized as one of the worlds
greatest cemeteries. Behind the
beautiful landmark gates one will find
the final resting place for nearly
600,000 persons. Many ordinary
and notable people, inventors,
artist, political leaders, Civil War
Generals, soldiers, drummer boy
( there is a statue of a Drummer Boy
to pay tribute to his young life),
Titanic and 65 victims from the 9/ 11
disaster, and in the 19th century
50% of the children under the age

of five died and many are buried
there. Some of the notable people
buried there are: Louis C. Tiffany,
Horace Greeley, William ( Boss)
Tweed, Samuel Morse, Charles
Ebbets, Leonard Bernstein, T.
Roosevelt's family, Edward R.
Murrow, Joey Gallo, Charles
Feltman, Henry and William
Steinway, DeWitt Clinton, F. A. O.
Schwartz and Frank Morgan (" Wizard
of Oz" fame) to name a few.
The grounds consist of 478
acres of varied topography which
lends to the beauty of Green- Wood
Cemetery. There are glacial lakes,
hills with flowering scrubs, trees,
plants, the historic chapel, sculpture
gardens, wild life sanctuary ( proud to
be a registered member of the
Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary
System which promotes public
involvement). There are scheduled
special events and walking tours
available for all to have the
opportunity to enjoy the landscape

Letters to the Editor
To Whom it May Concern,
I want to commend the Bethpage Chamber of Commerce for putting
together such a fantastic event! I am referring to the Bethpage Street Fair. I
love living in Bethpage and am so proud of our town, and was especially so
on October 30th.
I enjoyed myself tremendously on Sunday, and felt as if I was in a tourist
town ( Lake George to be specific) attending a street fair. To my good fortune,
this auspicious event was taking place right down the road from where I live.
The absolutely perfect weather also contributed to the splendid day.
Thank you for all the hard work that went into planning such an enormous
event. I am already looking forward to next years' street fair.
I am sure that I speak for a large majority of the Bethpage residents, when I
take this opportunity to say " thank you" to the Chamber members ( past and
present) for all their hard work; which has made Bethpage a better town, a
better place to live. Thank you for decorating Bethpage during the holiday
season. Thank you for organizing the mush anticipated Summer Festival.
Thank you for putting together the mission to beautify Bethpage.
I can only imagine the number of woman/ man hours that must have gone
into planning all these events. Thank you... for all that you have done, for all
that you do, and for what you will continue to do in the future.
Sincerely,
Margo Beyer ( Edie)
On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, I would like to say thank you so
much for your kind comments. It is heartwarming to know that you enjoyed
our last event ( Halloween Street Fair) and equally satisfying that you realize
that a lot of hard work goes into all our events. Thank you again for making all
of the members of the Chamber of Commerce smile ear to ear. - Editor
design, beautiful architecture with a
grand view of the city across the river
and the Statue of Liberty.
We thank the Bethpage Library
for working with our society and
making available such interesting
programs.
November Program - We
held our Annual Harvest Moon
Celebration with our friends from the
United Methodist Church in
Bethpage. We were pleased when
Pastor Mary Crump invited us to hold
our November meeting in her
community room at the Methodist
Church. At this time, Pastor Crump
will tell us about the history of the
Methodist Church in Bethpage, and
enlighten us about the Methodist
Cemetery ( located at the western
end of Central Avenue), which is the
final resting place to many who once
called Central Park/ Bethpage home.
I am sure you will find this
presentation timely and interesting
as we acknowledge, in thanksgiving,
all the good that has been bestowed
upon us as we get ready to
celebrate the Holiday Season.
The November get together with
our members, family and friends has
always been a very special time for
the Central Park Historical Society.
We have celebrated the harvest
over the years with a dinner and the
added fun of a raffle with prizes
donated by those in attendance.
The cost of the dinners have gone
up over the years, and our workers
have gotten older and the
preparation more difficult, so we
decided to skip the dinner and enjoy
the socialization while indulging in
delicious hors d'oeuvres and
desserts provided by our executive
board after the interesting program.
At this time we will enjoy the fun of
our raffle.
December Program - The
Holiday Program will take place on
Thursday ( note the change in the
day of the week from Wednesday to
Thursday), December 15th. The
date has been changed to
accommodate the many members
who are fortunate to get tickets to
the Holiday Concert sponsored by
our Town of Oyster Bay at the Tilles
Center. There will be more
information in the December
newsletter.
It's great hearing from you -
We always appreciate hearing from
people who have an interest in the
community of Central
Park/ Bethpage. This past month we
received the following
correspondence:
Ed Buffum, a high school friend
of Lenny Mulqueen, thanked Lenny
for Little League pictures from the
1960' s. He also acknowledged the
newsletter, and how much he
enjoys reading about the
community, the guys he grew up
with, and their families. Ed now lives
in Oklahoma. Thanks Ed for your
input and interest.
The following is a letter we
received from Perry DeLalio. " I
received a copy of your July
newsletter from my brother- in- law
Henry Suhr. As I read thru it, I
recognized every name and person
who wrote in letters. I was born in
Farmingdale, but lived in Bethpage
from 1941 to 1983. Yes, I recall
Benkert's Cider Mill, visiting there
with my father to pick up a barrel of
newly crushed sweet cider. We
would take the barrel home and
leave it ferment to become hard
cider. However, we DeLalio boys
would improvise straws to draw the
sweet cider out to our delight, when
it hardened it did not taste good.
My parents came from Parma,
Italy and there were people in
Bethpage who came from the same
town. So we visited the Schiavettas,
Bellini, Uccellini, Malvese, Maine,
Pansirole, and Ampoline. So as a
young boy I remember Central Park.
I was fortunate to develop the Bellini
property on Central Avenue, and
named the street Parma Drive for
their part in the history of Bethpage.
I remember: Hans Benkert selling
International Farm Trucks; kind
Carmine Cava, his daughter
Margaret, sons Nick and Eddie;
Frank Procida, the barber, who
worked long hours and never turned
us down if we came in late off the
farm. I could go on." We thank you
Perry and we hope you do go on
and share more of your recollections
of Central Park/ Bethpage. We will
welcome your membership in 2006.
The following letter is part of a
letter received from Elizabeth A. Cox
( Betty Ann Margot Cox). " Karen
Rozzi Smith, daughter of my dear
old friends and neighbors, Tom and
Ruth Knudsen Rozzi, has just sent
me several copies of your
newsletter. I really enjoyed reading
of all the activities, as well, as
memories of your members.
Born in 1925, I grew up in a home
on Central Avenue, directly across
from the Ahem family. My brothers
Bill and Graham ( now both
deceased) and I were close friends
of Bill and Jerry Ahem, while Mary K.
( now Mrs. Francis Looney of
Farmingdale) and I were inseparable
from elementary school ( and even
before) through high school. We
remain in touch by mail and phone; it
is a friendship I cherish.
Other childhood playmates
included Adele Sengstacken and
Alice Ludwig. Some of the
schoolmates I remember most vividly
are: Charlie Butehom, Ginny
Buchert ( who used to sing to us
during recess - a lovely soprano),
the Coraggios ( Mary and Jimmy both
in 8th grade at the same time!),
Patsy Johnson ( who loved to come
to my home after school because we
had a wooden swing and she was
such a dare devil on it!), Bobbie
Nicholson, Herbie Granberg, Bobbie
Opdahl, May ( later Mary) Dammn,
and Gloria Jensen.
In those days, the grammar
school was quite rigidly segregated,
not by race, of course, ( Central Park
was a typical rural white village of its
time), but by sex! Girls and boys had
separate entrances, and by and
large spent recess time separate as
well. How times have changed.
Some teachers from that era
stand out in my recollections: Mrs.
Terry for first grade, fair, kind and
patient; Bert Rose, who came to the
c> ea when I was in 6th grade, and I
believe was the only male on the
faculty; Miss Callahan, who taught
geography to 7th graders ( our first
experience with New York State
Regents exams!). She would faint to
see today's classrooms as she
leal Society Update
insisted that when not reading or
writing lessons, we sit with our arms
folded on the desk tops, rising when
called on, and being extremely
embarrassed if we couldn't come up
with the correct answer! And, of
course, 8th grade with Mrs. Dunton,
she expected the best from all of us
and never gave up on anyone. I
remember tutoring students who
had trouble with math, and I was sent
with them out to a table. in the hall by
the classroom door to tutor them.
My early interest in teaching has
persisted. I've taught English, Latin,
Phys. Ed. in high school and
colleges in N. Y., Wyoming,
Montana, South Dakota, Alaska and
Vermont. My last job was with a state
program in New Hampshire, locating
and training volunteer tutors for
functionally illiterate adults, as well
as, English as a second language for
refugees and other immigrants.
Teaching was always fun, and
greatly rewarding, but this last
experience was by far the best. I
retired in ' 97, but still do some
volunteer tutoring. Presently, I have
two students, one from Russia, the
other from Peru. They are a joy to
work with, so motivated and quick to
learn.
I would be interested to hear from
any old friends and schoolmates
who care to write ( snail mail only, no
computer)!"
Thank you Elizabeth for your
interesting recollections of Central
Park/ Bethpage.
Uccellini Family Reunion -
A family reunion was held at the
home of Len and Laura Mulqueen
the end of July. This was a " grand"
get together of the Uccellini family at
the original Uccellini home built in
1918 by Grandpa Carlo and Gemma
Uccellini. ( Len and Laura are the 3rd
generation owners of the house) at
12 Schneider Lane/ Nibbe Lane.
As Len puts it, " just about
everyone came!" A lot of traditions,
old pictures, vintage kitchen
implements and artifacts made by
grandpa Carlo were available for
fond reminiscing. Grandma's family
soup ( Uneylane) carefully and
lovingly prepared from a recipe
handed down to Nafra Uccellini
Mulqueen and now made by Laura,
Len, their son Craig, wife Bonnie
and daughter Cheryl. Great
Memories and fun shared by: Aunts
- Emma Uccellini and Olga Von
Thaden. Cousins - Louis, Walter,
Charlie, Tommy, Fred Uccellini, Tom
Mulqueen, Linda Chianese, Henry
Von Thaden, with their spouses,
children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren.
Also, at the party was
the Amendola family ( marriage of
daughter Janet to Tommy Uccellini).
Louis Uccellini took this opportunity
to interview John Amendola about
his recollections of growing up in
Central Park/ Bethpage.
John's father, Raymond
Amendola, was born in Naples, Italy
and his mother's father ( Morselli),
was from Sicily, Italy. They all settled
in New York City in the early 1900' s,
then about 1910 his parents bought
property in Central Park. The
property consisted of about six
acres, Broadway to Lexington
Avenue and from Nibbe Lane back
to the Powell Avenue School. Their
first home was the hotel on
Broadway ( the building still stands)
where John was born. John
remembers each room had a suite
number above the door with gas
lights in the hallway.
John has a vivid memory of
growing up in Central
Park/ Bethpage. Back to a time which
was free of the hustle and bustle we
know today. He remembers the
Ralston General Store, a barber
shop, the German Fortsch Brothers
Butcher Shop, Mr. Simone's Shoe
Repair Shop, Gulf Gas Station on
Broadway all north of the railroad
tracks, and the Parisi, Mazzara and
the Jarvis families who lived south of
Powell Avenue in large homes on
Broadway. The steam locomotives
ran through the center of town, and
Mr. Greco manned the gates to stop
the traffic. Mr. Greco had a small
building to protect him from the
weather, complete with a pot belly
stove for his comfort. South of the
tracks on the west side was
Procida's Barber Shop, Cava's Drug
Store, and the library. East side of
Broadway was a tavern and down to
Central Avenue was a German
bakery which had the best French
Crullers!
John's father served on the
school board with Mr. Cava, Louie
Margie, and John Klug. John
remembers the " donny brook"
meetings they had for money was
tight and they had to keep a watchful
account on the budget. His dad also
pitched in to help build St. Martin of
Tours Church, with other
parishioners, in the early 1920' s,
and he explained how they dug out
the basement with a horse and
scoop. His grandfather also donated
money to the church and there is a
stained glass window by the altar
with the family name on it.
The Amendola family had a
house built on Nibbe Lane in the
1940' s and the second house in the
1950' s across from the Uccellini
family. The Amendola children are:
Raymond, Antinette, John, Frank
and Marion. John liked to tell stories
of the feud between the Uccellini
and the Amendola family, great time
for story telling at a family reunion.
John told about the proud ethnic
settlements in Central Park. The
Italians lived west side of Stewart
Avenue ( today the number streets),
the Scandinavian lived in the north
part of town called Swede Town.
The Germans lived in the south part
of town. He told of the boys
choosing up sides for a ball game
and it was the Americans against the
Italians. We were all proud of who we
were.
John remembers the tragedies
that book place in Bethpage. The
plane crashes in Bethpage one on
Park Avenue, the pilot was killed,
and the other north of Powell
Avenue, where two men were killed.
The drowning of young Francis Fox
who was on his way to a Boy Scout
meeting when he found a friend,
Eddie Okula, in distress. He was
drowning in a rain filled culvert on
the north side of Powell Avenue and
Francis managed to pull him to
safety, but he could not save himself
and he drowned. There was a
plaque placed in the Powell Avenue
School to pay tribute to Francis Fox.
John remembers the Powell
Avenue School, the annex, and the
beautiful Maple trees that lined the
walk way. The grand cannons that
graced the front of the school. The
school went to the eighth grade,
then the students went on to
Farmingdale High School. He
remembers when the Powell
Avenue School was torn down, but
it did not go down without a struggle
when hit by the wrecking ball. The
town was growing and the need for
larger schools to accommodate the
many families who were now making
Bethpage their home on the one
time farm lands.
Now for some personal history of
John: He joined the army in 1947-
1950 and was activated when the
Korean War broke out in 1952. He
married Phyllis Pinto in 1951. They
lived on Broadway, in a Miller Home
across from the middle school of
today, their next door neighbors
were the Hortons. They later settled
on Concord Avenue where they
purchased their home for
$ 13,500.00 and raised four
children: Janet, John, Phyllis and
Robert and they now have twelve
grandchildren and two great
grandchildren. John is proud to say
he was employed by Grumman and a
volunteer fireman where he served
as Captain of the Hook and Ladder
Company # 3.
We thank John for sharing his
memories of growing up in Central
Park/ Bethpage, and we thank Louis
for asking all the right questions.

Staying In Character
Clifford the Big Red Dog, Elmo
and Angelina Ballerina all made an
appearance at Charles Campagne
Elementary School in Bethpage
during Children's Book Week. No,
PBS was not in town, but they
would've been delighted if they had
seen the students during the .
school's annual Character Book
Dress Up Day.
Students, teachers and staff had
the opportunity to share with each
other their favorite children's books.
" This is an opportunity for the kids
to discover new characters from the
older children," shared Librarian
Phyllis Ivers, dressed as the
Princess from the Princess and the
Pea. " Every year we ask the children
to dress as their favorite children's
book character. The older
classes love to read to the younger
students and introduce them to
some exciting unfamiliar storybook
characters." The halls were humming
as the students voices read,
in character, their favorite tales.
" Since we started Character Book
Dress Up Day, our book sign out
from the library has increased,"
commented Principal Cintado.
" Students can't help but become
enthusiastic about reading when
they first discover new & wonderful
characters in children's storybooks."
Character Book Dress Up Day first
started at the school three years
ago and has become a favorite
event of students. After all, who
doesn't love a good book?
Mrs. Reicherich's third grade students read their favorite children's
book to Ms. McCain's Kindergartners at the Charles Campagne
Elementary School, during the school's Character Book Dress Up Day.

Bethpage Nursery School Happening Dennis Holz Announces Candidacy For
Re- election For Bethpage Fire Commissioner At Bethpage Nursery School, we learned a lot from a unit on
mapping. We mapped our school room, our rooms at home and
our circle time. We took a neighborhood walk on Broadway and
then mapped the stores on Broadway.
We passed a dentist. We were excited because many of us
had already had our first dental experience.

The dentist was next to a Barber Shop. We looked in and
saw Tony. He turned the barber pole on for us.
Dennis Holz of the Bethpage Fire
Department has announced his
candidacy for re- election to the
Board of Fire Commissioners of the

of Engine and Ladder Company 4.
Dennis also currently serves as 1
