Things to Know Before
Selecting a Summer Camp
Whether parents have already
selected a summer day camp for
their children, or are thinking about
camp for the future, the Nassau
County Department of Health gives
the following advice to parents who
are sending their children to camp:
' Parents should visit a summer
camp BEFORE and DURING the
camp season.
* Talk to other parents of campers
who have previously attended
camp.
* Ask if the camp is in compliance
with County regulations.
In addition, parents should get
answers to the following questions.
These are the same questions the
Health Department asks before
inspecting a campsite and issuing a
permit to operate.
* What are the qualification of the
camp director and counselors?
* How are campers supervised,
including discipline policies?
* What is the counselor or camp
ration?
* ls there medical coverage?
* When are parents notified if
children become ill or injured?
* l a doctor or nurse in residence
or on call for campers at all times?
* Does the camp keep medical
records for campers as required by
law?
* What are camp procedures for
dealing with complaints of abuse?
* Are camp facilities and activities
safe?
* Are campers always supervised
while in the water?
' Are campers tested for
swimming abilities before
participating in swimming activities?
* What are the safety guidelines
for swimming, boating or canoeing?
* How are activities in craft shops
and sports activities supervised?
* Do mature counselors supervise
out- of- camp trips?
* Are there periodic fire drills for
campers and staff?
* Are the camp's location and
facilities protected against natural
hazards such as cliffs, sandpits, or
roads and highways?
* Are good health practices
observed in the camp kitchens and
dining areas?
The Health Department also
inspects the camps at least twice a
season to assure that all physical
facilities are properly operated and
maintained, and that adequate
supervision exists to provide a
healthy and safe environment in
accordance with the New York State
Sanitary Code. It also investigates
reports of serious incidents of
illness, injury and all allegations of
abuse or maltreatment and, when
requested, provides parents or
guardians of prospective campers
an opportunity to review inspection
reports and required plans.
Each year the Nassau County
Department of Health oversees the
issuance of permits for
approximately 150 camps, which will
host in excess of 32,000 children, a
Summer Day Camp needs a permit
to operate if it is occupied by
children under 16 years of age
between June 1 and September 15
and is primarily for the purpose of
outdoor organized group activities.
For information about summer
day camps, call 571- 3680 weekdays
from 9: 00a. m.- 4: 45p. m.
Bethpage Post Office Automated Postal Center Makes Mailing Easier
Customers visiting the Bethpage
Post Office, 339 Hicksville Road can
now experience the Postal Service's
version of the ATM while delivering
quick, easy, and convenient access
to postal services.
" APCs - Automated Postal
Centers - provide'easy access to
postal products and services just as
ATMs provide easy access to
banking services," said Mike
Silvestri, Bethpage Postmaster. " To
customers, one is> a self- service
bank, while the other is a self- service
Post Office. Unlike many ATMs,
APCs don't add transaction fees."
The Bethpage Post Office, lobby
is open from Monday to Friday: 5 am
to 5: 30 pm, Saturday: 5 am to 4: 30
pm. The APC expands customer
access to postal services beyond
traditional retail hours.
" Beyond expanding customer
access, the APC enables our
customers to conduct business with
us at their convenience."
Using credit and debit cards, the
APC enables customers to:
• Buy the same self- adhesive
stamps that are provided through
ATMs.
• Weigh, calculate and purchase
postage in any amount for items
weighing up to 70 lbs.
• Send items via Express Mail,
Priority Mail, First- Class Mail, and
Parcel Post services.
• Look up ZIP Codes and obtain
Postal Service mailing information.
• Obtain Express Mail, Certified
Mail, and Return Receipts.
• Purchase Delivery Confirmation
service.
• Obtain a receipt.
• Insure items up to $ 200.
The APC is just 4 feet high by 3
feet wide. It is located in the post
office next to a convenient parcel
slot that accepts packages up to 12
inches high, 14 inches deep and 20
inches wide.
The APCs will help free retail
associates to assist customers with
face- to- face transactions such as
mailing packages to international
locations, using Registered Mail
service, and purchasing postal
money orders. Passport applications
will continue to be accepted in
person,
Silvestri said the decision to first
place APCs in Post Office lobbies
follows the strategy of the banking
industry.
" Interestingly, many banking
customers, intimidated by the new
ATM technology, still gravitated to
teller lines. Banks eased fears by
placing staff in lobbies to assist
customers with initial transactions.
We're following the same scenario
by having Postal Service employees
assist our customers."
In the past year approximately
2,500 APCs have been installed in
Post Offices across the nation.

Mid- Island Y JCC Hosts " Shabbat
Across America/ Canada"
On Friday, March 4, the Mid-
Island Y Jewish Community Center
in Plainview will join with
approximately 700 synagogues
across the continent in opening its
doors to practicing and non-practicing
Jews, so they may
experience and rejoice in a
traditional Shabbat service and
festive meal. The Mid- Island Y JCC is
inviting Jewish singles of all ages to
experience an interactive Friday
night beginners service and a
joyous Shabbat dinner beginning at
7 pm.
"\ A/ hiie families are more likely to
attc id this event at their local
synagogue, we wanted to create a
memorable and rewarding
experience specifically for Jewish
singles so that they feel more
comfortable and be more likely to
participate," said Hillary Lagnado,
LCSW, who is coordinating the
program for the first time at the Mid-
Island Y JCC.
Conceived and organized by the
National Jewish Outreach Program
( NJOP), " Shabbat Across
America/ Canada" represents a
united effort by the entire Jewish
community to renew interest in the
fourth of the Ten Commandments -
observing a weekly day of rest
( Shabbat in Hebrew).
Designed to teach a generation
of unaffiliated Jews about the
beauty and significance of the
Jewish Sabbath, " Shabbat Across
America/ Canada" is the first
nationally orchestrated program
which appeals to members of all
major Jewish denominations. It is
also the first and only program aimed
at uniting Jews across the United
States and Canada through one
single event.
The National Jewish Outreach
Program was established in 1987 by
Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald and has
become one of the world's largest
and most successful Jewish
outreach organizations. Through
programs such as " Shabbat Across
America/ Canada" and " Read
Hebrew America/ Canada," NJOP
has successfully reached more than
730,000 North American Jews, and
engaged them in Jewish life.
The cost, which includes dinner
and service, is $ 18 per person. Pre-registration
is required by March 2.
Want more details? Call the JCC's
Singles Department at 516- 822-

Elections Finale
X- lnfo: Invalid to Line
Elections now over. For the most part, they have been a big success.
Couple of vignettes: In Baghdad, a suicide bomber detonated outside a
children's hospital near a polling site. No one was hurt, but the voters walking
by spat on his corpse. Also in Baghdad, an ambulance drove towards a
polling site. We had special stickers made and distributed to identify ' real'
emergency vehicles in order to foil enemy efforts to use stolen ambulances
and police cars for car bombs. A crowd formed around the ambulance and
they threatened to tear the driver/ bomber to shreds until US Forces arrived
and defused both the bomb and the situation. There were reports of Iraqis
arriving from hospitals on crutches in some areas to cast their ballots. The Iraqi
Security Forces, Police, and Army stood their ground despite hundreds of
local, mostly ineffective attacks. In some places their Army was cheered. In
some places the Iraqis were seen giving US forces the ' finger,' but in this case
it refers to the ink on the finger of everyone who voted in the election.
Overall, a great day except for the British C- 130 going down. We can now
focus completely on handing off this mission and going home - Mike

George's Tip of the Week
Having 18 inches of snow dumped on us, I know it is hard to think about
golf. Before you make your late winter and spring trips to the golf range here
are a couple tips to make your first journeys productive.
During the winter the single most fundamental I work on is my grip. The
grip is so important, the grip holds the golf club. A bad grip can cause 1)
inconsistent backswing 2) inconsistent positions at the top of your swing 3)
inconsistent impact.
To insure my grip is good I let my left hand hang down at my side and let it
stay naturally, holding a golf club. From that position I just tighten the left
hand, the right hand just covers the left thumb. Using this technique will
lessen all unnecessary forearm rotation at address and improve your ball
striking. Remember the key to good golf is good grip. You can practice this
drill anywhere office, home, and hitting golf balls.

Brush Your Animal's Teeth
February is National Pet Dental
Health Month and Bide- A- Wee
wants to remind pet owners of the
importance of good dental care for
their companion animals.
Periodontal disease is the
number one diagnosed problem in
dogs and cats over age three and
can lead to tooth decay, bad breath,
bleeding gums and tooth loss. The
bacteria that cause periodontal
disease can even enter the
bloodstream and damage the heart,
liver, kidney and lungs. It can,
however, be prevented.
A dental exam should be part of
your pet's annual checkup. If
necessary, your veterinarian may
recommend a dental cleaning, which
is performed under anesthesia. But
in order to maintain good dental
health for your cat or dog, you have
to establish a home dental care
regimen.
" You should brush your cat or
dog's teeth every day," says Dr.
Lynn Lawrence, chief of staff of
Bide- A- Wee's veterinary clinics.
" There are many pet dental products
available, and with a little patience
brushing your pet's teeth can
become as routine as brushing its
fur."
A brushing program should be
introduced to pets gradually, with
short and positive sessions. Avoid
over- restraining your pet, and praise
and reassure it throughout the
process. To start, dip a finger into
beef bouillon for dogs or tuna water
for cats, then rub the soaked finger
gently over the pet's mouth and
teeth. Gradually, put gauze over the
finger and gently scrub the teeth in a
circular motion. Finally, introduce a
soft toothbrush with toothpaste
designed especially for pets.
Special pet toothbrushes are
available from your veterinarian or
pet supply store. Don't use human
toothpaste, which could upset the
animal's stomach.
Your dog or cat can't tell you if it
has a toothache, but early warning
signs of oral disease include bad
breath, a change in eating habits,
pawing at the face or mouth and
even depression. If your pet exhibits
any of these symptoms, make an
appointment at a Bide- a- Wee
veterinary clinic or with your local
veterinarian.
Bide- A- Wee's veterinary clinics,
open to the public on an
appointment basis, are located at
410 East 38th Street in Manhattan
( 212- 532- 5884), 3300 Beltagh
Avenue in Wantagh ( 51.6- 785- 4687)
and 118 Old Country Road in
Westhampton ( 631- 325- 0280).
In its 101 years, Bide- A- Wee has
found homes for over 1,000,000
dogs, cats, kittens and puppies. In
addition to its three shelters and full-service
veterinary clinics in
Manhattan, Wantagh and
Westhampton, Bide- A- Wee offers
training assistance for adopters;
humane education programs for
thousands of children each year; pet
therapy visits to nursing homes,
hospitals and hospices; the Golden
Years Retirement Home for older
dogs and cats; two Pet Memorial
Parks and bereavement counseling.
Bide- A- Wee never euthanizes an

Officer Failla Returns to
Bethpage HS
LaSalle Corner
Suffolk Police Officer and BOCES educator Paul Failla
shares his message with social studies students at Bethpage
High School.
The Bethpage High School
welcomed back Suffolk County
Police Officer Paul Failla for
discussions with social studies
classes. Officer Failla first came to
the school two years ago, following
the tragic auto deaths of three high
school students.
Officer Failla last year conducts a
spirited, informal discussion with
students that touches on driver
safety and the challenge of being a
young person today and facing peer
pressure. As part of the BOCES Arts
in Education program, Officer Failla
teaches students the value of
making " healthy life decisions."
One of the reasons he is able to
connect effectively with students is
because he is a great public speaker
who engages them in an interesting
and informal two- day dialogue. The
message Officer Failla brought to
the students at Bethpage was one
of tolerance and respect: respect for
one another's differences and
respect for one another's lives. This
means exercising responsibility on
the roads, includes a real life
explanation on speeding, DWI and
the unknown.
A 25- year veteran of the force,
for the last five years Officer Failla
has brought his character education
programs to students in more than
40 school districts on Long Island.

Central Blvd's
Sale I'll
As a culminating activity for the
money unit in second grade, the
second grade Central Blvd. teachers
held a White Elephant Sale. Items
were donated by parents and the
children were in charge of creating
paper purses, making price tags for
their items, being the salespeople
and being the consumers. On
January 26, 2005 the second
graders had a chance to shop in
their own classrooms as well as the
other three second grade rooms.
This year, instead of using the
traditionally used plastic coins, the
children bought the items with real
money. All proceeds went into large
class jars and a donation was given
to the school wide Tsunami
Fundraising Campaign. The second
White Elephant
Buy That
grade parents sent in many brand
new items as donations and the
children were very excited about this
shopping spree. When they were
the salespeople, they had to collect
the money and give change
whenever necessary. The students
did a very impressive job handling
the money. The teachers stressed
this was a project which reflected
Americans reaching out to help!
Second grade raised over $ 550.00
by holding their White Elephant Sale
and donations from their parents.
The C. B. S. students should be very
proud of themselves for helping
others in such an important way. As
a school, almost $ 5000.00 was
donated... Americans reaching out
to help!
Pictured here are two classes, one class is making their
purchases while the other class is welling their goods. Many
terms from the social studies unit are introduced as well.
Pictured here are three children engaged in a sale: Michelle
Cirillo is counting her money to pay while Kimberly Cosgrove
prepares to give change and Dominic Ambrosio is on hand to
offer assistance.

G- O- B- Spells ' T Know
Geography" at JFK
Congratulations to JFK Middle School sixth grader Simon
Jambrone who won the schoolwide leg of the National
Geography Bee. Classes at JFK held competitions and a winner
from each class competed in the schoolwide bee, much like a
traditional spelling bee with the questions centering on
geography and identifying regions, cities, etc. of significance
rather than the spelling of words. Simon is now eligible to
compete in the statewide competition to be held this spring.
He is seen here wearing a medal and displaying a certificate of
achievement while being congratulated by ( l- r) Assistant
Principal Kerri McCarthy, Director of Social Studies Jody Smith,
and Interim Principal Gerry Giaimo.
A Big Thanh You From
Second Graders
Pictured here from left to right are Mrs. Cordiner, Mr.
Ritchie, Mr. Cordiner, and some of the students holding up
their newly delivered mail.
Mrs. Cordiner's second grade
class in Central Blvd. School would
like to thank a community helper,
mailman, Mr. Ritchie, for coming in
during their holiday party to help
distribute the class mail. Mrs.
Cordiner has a very realistic looking
mailbox in the classroom which the
children use to send each other
greeting cards for the various
holidays. Mr. Ritchie, father of Andy
Ritchie, a student in Mrs. Cordiners
class, was gracious enough to come
in on his day off to help distribute
over 300 cards written by the class
members to each other wishing
them a happy holiday. Mr. Cordiner
came in to help along with the class
moms, Mrs. Ritchie, Mrs. Gennaro,
Mrs. Gilbert, and Mrs. Pile. Everyone
worked hard to make the party a
success and the class appreciated
all the efforts.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
Oh most beautiful flower of Mt.
Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of
heaven, blessed mother of the Son
of God, immaculate virgin, assist me
in my necessity. Oh star of the sea,
help me and show me herein, you
are my mother. Oh Holy Mary
Mother of God, Queen of Heaven
and Earth, I humbly beseech you
from the bottom of my heart to
succor me in this necessity. There
are none who can withstand your
power. Oh Mary I place this cause in
your hands. ( 3 times). Holy spirit,
you who solve all problems, light all
roads so that I can obtain my goals.
You gave me the divine gift to
forgive all evil against me, and that in
all instances of my life, you are with
me. I want in this short prayer to
thank you for all things as you
confirm once again that I never want
to be seperated from you in eternal
glory. Thank you for your mercy
toward me and mine. The person
must say this prayer 3 consecutive
days, the request will be granted.
This prayer must be published after
the favor has been granted. Chris C.
