On April 6'' Bethpage residents came out in numbers to attend the
Restoration Advisory Board ( RAB) meeting, which was held by the
United States Navy at the Bethpage Community Center, dealing with a
plume of contamination in regards to the Grumman facility. This
meeting was also scheduled to address concerns that residents had in
regards to the progress of the GM- 38 Remedial Design and the Closed

Avenue. This being the construction of a stripping tower intended to
remove contaminants from our aquifer, which apparently originated
from the Grumman/ Navy property. Although this meeting was intended
to present the plan of action by the Unites States Navy it quickly
turned into a shouting match as angry residents wanted answers to
questions ranging from drinking water safety to the schedule of the

Lyme Disease Info
You Need to Know
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor
John Venditto issued his annual
advisory to residents urging them to
educate themselves about Lyme
disease and the precautions that
should be taken when venturing
into the great outdoors.
" Lyme disease is a potentially
serious infection that can produce
skin, arthritic, cardiac and
neurological symptoms," Supervisor
Venditto said. " It is carried by the
pinhead- size deer tick, which
becomes active once the
temperature rises above 40
degrees. Don't let the name of the
tick mislead you, though, because
the deer tick is found even in areas
where there are not deer.
Researchers have discovered that
the tick can be brought into new
areas by hitching a ride on a bird."
The Supervisor pointed out that,
as with many illnesses, early
detection is the key because Lyme
disease responds very well to
treatment in the initial stages. If you
suspect you have been bitten by a
deer tick, or show any symptoms,
call your doctor immediately.
Perhaps the most well known
symptom is a circular, reddish rash at
the site of the bite... the rash forms a
red enlarging circular pattern with a
clear center. Not everyone who is
bitten develops the rash, though, so
it is important to be aware of other
symptoms such as fever, headache,
malaise, stiff neck, and muscle or
joint pain. Also, the rash will
disappear, if left untreated, but that
does not mean you are cured.
Supervisor Venditto outlined
some of the precautions that can be
taken to reduce the risk of Lyme
disease.
" Wear light- colored clothing
because it makes it easier to spot
ticks," the Supervisor advised.
" Long- sleeve shirts tucked into
pants and pants tucked into boots or
socks are the most practical outfit for
venturing into the woods. Use an
insect repellent specifically for. ticks.
Be sure to follow all instructions on
the package when applying. Keep
long hair pulled back. When
gardening, pruning shrubs or
otherwise handling soil or
vegetation, wear light- colored
gloves and spot- check them for ticks
frequently.
" If you are headed into a wooded
area, stay on clear, well- traveled
trails. Try not to brush up against
vegetation. Avoid sitting directly on
the ground or on open stone walls. If
you are in a wooded area for an
extended period of time, you might
check yourself every two hours or
so. Once you are home, wash all
your clothes in hot water with a
strong detergent, take a shower and
shampoo your hair."
The Supervisor noted that
residents can help reduce the tick
population on their property by
taking a few simple measures. ' Ticks
are susceptible to dehydration," he
stated. " You can reduce humidity on
your property by pruning trees,
clearing brush, mowing grass short
and letting grass dry thoroughly
between waterings.; Also, make your
property unattractive to animals that
are hosts to ticks by eliminating
birdfeeders and baths; erecting
fencing around your property;
clearing away any wood, garbage
and leaf piles; and removing stone
walls that provide home to wildlife.
Lastly, you can have your property
chemically treated with any number
of approved tick retardants. Check
with your local lawn or garden center
for professional advice."
The Supervisor added that pets
should be checked regularly for
ticks. Outdoor cats, as well as dogs
who run loose, can carry ticks into
the house and transmit them to
humans. Tick collars or powders can
make your pet a less attractive
vehicle for ticks.
If you do find a tick attached to
your skin, the Supervisor says it is
not cause for panic. " Not all ticks are
infected," he said. " Also, studies
have shown that infected ticks begin
transmitting Lyme disease an
average of 36 to 48 hours after
attachment. So, your chance of
contracting Lyme disease is
significantly reduced if you remove a
tick within the first 24 hours."
The Supervisor added that
further information about Lyme
disease and other tick- borne
illnesses can be obtained by calling
the Lyme Disease Foundation, Inc.

800- 886- 5963. Or, you can visit the

communities. There are presently
over one hundred boys waiting for
Big Brothers.
Do you remember the person in
your own life, other than your
parents, who broadened your
horizons, brought a smile to your
face, or made life a little more
magical? Was it a coach? A favorite
teacher? An uncle or a family friend?
Who was your mentor?
By being a Big Brother, you can
do that for a child by simply being
you and doing the things you like to
do together. Take in a movie, play
some video games, shoot some
hoops or work on the car together.
Take your little brother to his first
baseball game. Or teach him how to
play golf. The magic of mentoring
lies in the little moments you share
together.
A Big Brother is not a substitute
parent but rather an adult friend to a
child who needs some extra
attention. While you are spending
time and having fun together, you'll
watch a boy grow up to be a better
man just by knowing you.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has
been the premiere mentoring
agency on Long Island since 1977,
and has cultivated thousands of
relationships for children in need of
additional support and guidance.
Results from an independent study
showed that children who met
regularly with their " Bigs" were less
likely to skip school, were more
confident about their schoolwork,
had improved relationships with their
parents and peers, and were
significantly less likely to engage in
negative and destructive behavior.
To become a Big Brother, please call
516- 731 - 7880 or visit our web site at
www. bbbsli. org.

To reduce fever: Drink boiled onions. ( Alternate cure: Carry a key in the palm
of your hand.)
To treat cramps: Place a magnet at the foot of the bed to draw the pain from
the body. ( Alternate cure: Wear a piece of " tarred yarn" around the upper
leg.)

Golden Girls Finish Season
In Golden Style!
The 24- member Varsity Kickline Squad, " The Golden Girls,"
came in second place at the National competition held in
Orlando, Florida.
The 24- member Varsity Kickline
Squad at Bethpage High School,
also known as ' The Golden Girls"
had an incredible record this year,
qualifying them to compete at the
national competition held at the Hard
Rock Live in Orlando, Florida. After
dazzling the judges with
outstanding choreographed dance
routines consisting of dance, kicks
and hip- hop, the squad came in
second place at nationals, defeating
dozens of high schools that
performed.
Assunta Catalano, co- captain of
the squad with Sara Ceglio,
attributes their success to teamwork
and the mutual affection they share
for each other. " The nationals were
amazing -- everyone did great. Our
coach, Jeanna Novelli, came to all
the competitions. She inspires us
and gives us energy," said Assunta,
a bubbly senior with a quick smile.
Coach Novelli notes, " We have a
great team. The girls are dedicated
to the cause of going to the
nationals - they have many fund
raisers allyear long and work hard."
' They had a mission and they
fulfilled it." Ms. Novelli and " The
Golden Girls" would like to thank the
local merchants, community
members and especially their
parents for their support.

clean- up at the above site as well as details regarding construction of
the United States Navy stripping tower facility. The Town of Oyster
Bay is overseeing the site plan for this facility.
Legislator Ed Mangano was on hand to address the crowd and
voice the concerns of residents as well as to provide some background
information in regards to what has been done and what needs to be
done in regards to this issue and the overall contamination problem.
United States Navy Remedial Project Manager, Jim Colter,
acknowledged that residents concerns were well founded regarding
the condition of the construction site and securing well- heads. He
promised he would address site safety issues immediately, restore
some of the landscape and work with the Town of Oyster Bay to
develop a site- plan to be presented to the community within the next
three months. Town representatives indicated that they would not
approve further work without a detailed site- plan.
Many residents including John Pacifico raised questions in
regards to this issue as well as the overall contamination clean- up
process. Representatives from the Navy as well as from the Bethpage
Water District addressed many concerns in regards to the drinking
water issue. Bethpage Water District attorney Anthony Sabino stated
that no one in Bethpage was drinking tainted water. He reiterated that
the drinking water in Bethpage is absolutely " safe."
There is a huge amount of information to digest in regards to this
issue. Therefore a website was established which outlines the history
and progress of the United States Navy. Please log on to www. nwirp-bethpa.

Central Blvd. Students
Get Physical!
The fifth grade students at Bethpage Central Blvd.
Elementary School showcased their physical education skills
and knowledge of sports games they learned.
The entire fifth grade, attired in
spiffy t- shirts supplied by the
Bethpage Central Boulevard
Elementary School PTA, recently
put on a dazzling show of athletic
skills in celebration of the 50th
anniversary of Central Blvd.
Elementary School.
As cheering students packed the
gym, they were thrilled by feats of
athletic dexterity as fifth graders
performed a variety of acrobatic
stunts and participated in
competitive games. The games
included speedball, battleship and
" Dance Through the Decades," a
medley of dances that included the
macarena, the twist, hand jive and
disco.
Impressive acrobatic acts
included juggling scarves, spinning
plates, stunts with hula- hoops, and
tumbling skills. The fast paced game
of " speedball" incorporated both
soccer and football skills while
students maneuvered the ball to the
music of oldies and trendy songs of
the day.
The Physical Educatibn Demo,
an event held annually ai Central
Boulevard Elementary Sbhool was
coordinated by Physical Education
Teachers Patrick Braglia and Nicole
Agovino. According to Ms. Agovino,
not only do students perform
athletically, they also organize an art
project that ties into the theme of
the event. This year, MsL Soviero, art
teacher at Central Blvd. Elementary
School, coordinated a project that
involved researching spjorts figures
of the 1950' s to the present. After
students chose the spolrts figures
they wished to portray, mey made
beautiful murals about them which
adorned the walls of the gym.
' The whole event isjfocused on
the physical education skills fifth
grade students have learned over
the years," said Ms. Soviero. ' They
learned many skills and the
importance of team games and
teamwork."

Kramer Lane Elementary School
in Bethpage was recently honored
at the 5th Annual Commerce Plaza
Inc. Celebration Dinner. The school
was honored for its participation in
Commerce Plaza, an exercise
designed to teach young students
about business.
Commerce Plaza is a mini-simulated
business community
designed to develop student
awareness and skill sets pertaining
to the work world. The ' community'
consists of a bank, a hospital, a town
hall, a restaurant, a utility company,
and other key places that you would
find in your average community.
Students begin the process by
filling out applications, so that the
people running Commerce Plaza
can do their best to accommodate a
particular child's interest. When the
students arrive they are assigned to
different stations at Commerce
Plaza, performing the duties of a
typical employee at that particular
place of business. For example, a
student who may have shown an
interest in math on their application,
could very well be assigned to work
as a teller in the Commerce Plaza
Bank, whereas a student who may
have shown an interest in medicine,
would work in the Commerce Plaza
Hospital.
Kramer Lane Elementary School
has been participating in this
program for several years and has
served as a consultant for
Commerce Plaza Inc. Through the
years, the school has provided
- ' uable input to the organization on
> w to refine and improve its
ogram to best reach students,
aryanne Gaffney, the lead teacher
at Kramer Lane, has been a driving
force behind this partnership, along
with Kramer Lane Principal Dr. Frank
Cicione.
" Our children have obtained an
understanding and respect for the
real world of work and the
interdependence between
business and community services,"
said Dr. Cicione. ; iMost importantly,
they have experienced first hand
the importance and relationship of
their daily education in school as the
vehicle to prepare themselves to be
the business leaders of tomorrow."
TOBAY Beach Dune Stabilization Project an Unqualified Success
Under a bright blue sky with the sun shining, more than 350 volunteers
gathered atTobay Beach for the 17th Annual Dune Stabilization Project on
March 19, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto, who indicated that
60,000 stalks of dune grass were planted by the volunteers.
" This year's Dune Stabilization Project was one of the best," stated
f upervisor Venditto, who participated in the project along with Town Board
members Angelo A. Delligatti, Joe Muscarella, Anthony D. Macagnone,
Chris J. Coschignano, Mary A. McCaffery and Rose Marie Walker and
Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich. " The weather could not have been
more perfect, and volunteers, who had traveled from all parts of the Town,
as well as outside the Town, planted American beach grass on dunes both
to the east and west of the pavilion. I was particularly pleased to see so
many young people participating, many of them members of Scout troops
and school service organizations."
The Supervisor went on to say that the Dune Stabilization Program, which
began in 1989, has been an immensely popular volunteer project for residents
of all ages, as well as an important component of the Town's beach
preservation efforts. " I think the popularity of the dune planting program is
that people can actually see the results of their efforts," Supervisor Venditto
stated. " The dune grass they plant is directly responsible for preserving the
dunes and beach they enjoy during the summer.
" What many people don't realize, though, is that the dune stabilization
program is a very important part of the Town's beach preservation efforts,"
Supervisor Venditto stated. " Coastal sand dunes are complex, but much
needed ecosystems. Dunes provide a natural barrier against storm surges
and high winds during severe weather. Without dunes, waterfront property is
at greater risk. Wildlife, such as shore birds, can lose essential habitat, and
the coastline itself can be altered. The fragile nature and erodibility of dunes
makes the dune stabilization program critical because the grass helps stabilize
and enlarge the dunes by catching blowing and drafting sand."
The Supervisor said part of the success of the program was, as in past
years, due to the generous contributions of food and equipment by local
business and community groups. " This year," he said, " volunteers each
received a commemorative T- shirt and were fortified with hot New England
clam chowder provided by Frank M. Flower & Sons and Chef Tony at the
Westbury Manor, donuts from Dunkin' Donuts in Syosset, as well as coffee
and hot chocolate. The Village of Massapequa Park and the Hicksville Fire
Department provided coffee urns, thermoses, pots and ladles. Mr. John was
also a donor.
" I firmly believe that when government/ businesses and the community
work together toward a common goal, there is nothing they can't accomplish,"
Supervisor Venditto commented. " The success of the Dune
Stabilization Project is testament to that partnership. The efforts of dedicated
volunteers and Town employees from the Departments of Enviromental
Resources and Parks, supported by local businesses and community organizations,
are helping ensure that Tobay Beach flourishes for generations to
come

HEAD OF
THE CLASS
Your Life Classes, Courses and Lessons to Help Enrich Your Life
Watercolor Painting Classes
Cedarmere, the Roslyn Harbor
home of 19th century American
poet and editor William Cullen
Bryant, will offer a spring schedule of
watercolor painting classes, Nassau
County Executive Thomas R.
Suozzi has announced.
The popular series will be held on
Tuesdays: May 3,10,17, 24 and 31.
Students may select either the
morning class from 10 a. m. to 1 p. m.
or the afternoon class from 1: 30 to
4: 30 p. m.
The program is geared to
beginning and intermediate
watercolor students, with special
attention given to those with little or
no previous experience. Selma
Stern; recently honored by the
American Watercolor Society,
returns for her eighth year as
instructor.
All sessions will be held in
Cedarmere's Gothic Revival mill,
once used as an artist's studio by
Frances Bryant Godwin, great
granddaughter of the poet.
Participants will have the opportunity
to paint " en plein air," weather
permitting. The picturesque
Cedarmere grounds often inspired
Bryant's grandson Harold Godwin,
an accomplished watercolorist,
whose work is displayed at the
estate.
The fee for the course is $ 100.
Students are also required to
provide their own materials. No
