Activities Moved to this Weekend
Golden Eagles Improve to 3- 1;
Host Floral Park on Saturday
Despite the Bethpage High
School Golden Eagle's triumph
over New Hyde Park on
Saturday, the Homecoming 2005
parade and activities were rained
out. As a result, vendors and
booths will be on hand this
Saturday, October 15 at Howie
Vogts Field at the Bethpage High
School, selling various Bethpage
sweatshirts, pennants and other
items in support of school spirit.
Additionally, students are
expected to present their floats
and as usual, the Bethpage
Golden Girls and Marching band
will perform at halftime. The
annual homecoming parade
will be held around the high
school track during half- time.
The entire community is
invited to attend this week's
game and Homecoming
festivities as the Golden Eagles
take on Floral Park High School.
Kickoff is at 2 p. m. Last
Saturday, the Eagles were
victorious, defeating New Hyde
Park by a score of 33- 12 as
Dominic Esposito rushed for 78
yards and two touchdowns on
nine carries for Bethpage. Erick
Zuniga recovered a fumble for
Bethpage on the first play. This
led to a quick 6- 0 lead on the
first of Dominic's two touchdown
runs, a 33- yarder. Erick also
contributed a 1- yard touchdown
run of his own. As a team, the

Bethpage Basset Hound Receives
Gold and Silver Medal in
Tri- State Rescue Basset Hound Olympics
Dillon Lyle, Otis' handler helps
Otis compete in the hurdles ( above)
and the high jump ( below).
Pictures above, Otis is obviously
extremely excited and overwhelmed
at receiving two medals at the Tri-
State Basset Rescue Olympics.
Judging by the look on this proud
pup's face you can see thai Otis
Lyle is quite pleased with himself as
he poses for the camera while
wearing his first and second place
medals. You see, OTIS, Bethpage's
own basset hound Olympic champ
competed in the Tri- State Rescue
Basset Olympics, which w- 3' re held
on October I at Wantagh Park. Otis,
took th ' gold in the obstacle course
an ' eceived a second place medal
in the hurdles.
At a spry four years old, Otis
proved that a bassett hound can be
both athletic and exceptionally
good- looking. Proud Mom and Dad
( Janet and Scott Lyle) along with
brother Dillon, who was Otis'
handler for the events and sister
Chelsea couldn V be prouder of their
four legged pal.
When we asked how Otis trained
for this challenging and at times
doggy- dog competition, Otis
responded with a loud and deep
' WOOF" while maintaining his
proud and stately composure. He is
a true champion in every sense of
the word and we congratulate him
as well as his family for making all
of us in Bethpage so doggone
proud! Our tails are waggin!

P. M. Art Historian Donald Dwyer will
present a fascinating slide/ lecture
entitled " Gustave Courbet and
French Realism" as part of the ongoing
ART IN THE AFTERNOON
series. Courbet began his career as
a Neo- Baroque Romantic, but the
revolutions of 1848 caused him to
view Romanticism and Neo-
Classicism as escapes from reality
and he reverted to a more realistic
style which influenced his two
young helpers, Monet and Renoir.
His iconoclasm pointed the way to
modern art.

An Activity Both Parents and
Children Can Enjoy Together
This year millions of families will
be looking for a practical gift. Parents
want a safe and boredom free
activity to help keep themselves and
their children's time occupied
together. Studies show that kids
really want to spend more time with
their parents and grandparents. This
is just one of the reasons that
gokarting is gaining popularity as a
fun, safe activity for the entire family.
" Over the years Gokarting has
been an exciting and fun home
activity for our children and their
friends," says Jay Backer, father of
five children from the ages of 5 to
11. " Children love spending time
with their parents. That's one of the
reasons we purchased our gokarts.
It has allowed my wife and I,
grandparents too, to have exciting
fun and spend quality time with our
children all year round."
Here are Backer's three practical
tips when purchasing a gokart as a
gift.
1. When deciding on a gokart for
your family, make sure to purchase
one that has at least a 3- point
seatbelt harness. Gokarts are built
much differently than they were
years ago. A 3- point seat belt will
help ensure the safety of the driver
and passenger.
2. When searching for the proper
gokart, make sure it has top bars and
is made from 11- 12 gauge steel.
These features will help ensure
safety for yourself and your
passengers.
3. When you decide on your
purchase of a gokart, make sure that
your gokart has a wide center of
balance. This feature will help
guarantee that you and/ or your
passengers will have all four wheels
on the ground during vour ride.
Greg Leith with ' Balancing life
with Family' suggests to plan an
activity together with your family as a
whole, and with individual family
members. " As you do this,
remember that teachable moments
are almost like ' intentional
accidents': they happen, but not
always because you planned them.
So be sure to plan large quantities of
time with your family throughout the
year so they'll have a chance to
occur." According to Backer,
" Planning time with the family and
doing something that everyone
loves has produced quality family
time that our children appreciate.
We've created several priceless
moments and memories while
gokarting with each of our children,
grandparents and my twin brother's
family."
Individuals and families who
would like to learn more about
gokarting and which ones would be
more suitable for you can visit us at

Marissa is a very special,
warmhearted and giving young lady.
An example of this came on
Thursday May 5, 2005.
For seven years Marissa had
never had a " real" haircut. She
would only have an inch or so
trimmed off once in awhile. On day,
as I was online, I pulled up the
LOCKS of LOVE website. Locks of
Love is an organization that helps
children with medical conditions. I
called Marissa over to see these sad
little children that had no hair. On the
next page these same children were
now smiling and happy that they
now had hair. After looking at the
before and after photos of these
kids, Marissa began asking me
questions. She wanted to help
these kids too. So, I investigated
which hair salons in our area
participated in donating hair to this
very special organization.
After school ( and homework),
Marissa asked me if I made her the
haircut appointment. She was
determined to help right away. I
called and we went. Marissa had ten
plus inches cut off! She was very
happy with her decision to not only
cut her hair but was very excited that
her donated hair was going to make
another kid happy and excited too.
Our family is always proud of
Marissa and all she does. Words
cannot express the emotions of
seeing this sweet little girl give of
herself to help another child.
We love our Marissa and we truly
are proud of the young lady she is
becoming.

Running Club Donates Funds to
Long Island Charities
Among the highlights of the
September 20 meeting of the
Greater Long Island Running Club
was the presentation of a substantial
portion of the proceeds from the
Club's very successful summer
races to several important Long
Island charities.
Proceeds from the Vytra- TOBAY
Triathlon were donated to the Long
Island Alzheimer's Foundation, the
Long Island Chapter of the
Leukemia Society, and the Friends
of the Bay, proceeds from the Vytra
Women's Run were donated to the
1- in- 9 Breast Cancer Action
Coalition, and proceeds from the
Sprint for the Arts were donated to
the Nassau County Museum of Art.
" It is entirely fitting and proper
that those of us who enjoy our sport
on the roads of Long Island give
something back to those
outstanding local charitable
organizations that are doing such
important work to improve the quality
of life on the Long Island that we all
love," observed Running Club Vice
President Mindy Davidson. " It is our
privilege and pleasure to support
that work."
Jennifer Kardos of the Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation
( 2nd I) accepts the check from ( L to R) Running Club Vice
President Mindy Davidson, and Valerie Garguilo and Eileen
Nolan of Vytra Health Plans.
Vytra Women's Run Vice President Rosemary Camilleri ( R)
and Eileen Nolan ( L) and Valerie Garguilo ( C) of Vytra Health
Plans present the check to Geri Barish ( 2nd R), President of 1

Update From Town Hall
Bethpage Community Park
The Town of Oyster Bay is continuing to test the soil in the community
park, specifically in the last area to be tested - the soil beneath the skating
rink. As in the past, the park is closed on weekdays while the testing is going
on and open on weekends for the use of the community.
The specialists attending the town's bi- monthly meetings about the park
are an impressive group of men and women. The town is conducting dual
studies on the future of the park. One group is involved in the remediation of-the
park and the other, the plans for the skating rink and reconfiguration of
the park.
NOTHING WILL BE CHANGED WITHOUT A PUBLIC SHOWING OF THE
PROPOSED PLANS!
I will continue to attend these meetings to be the voice of the people in
Bethpage.
Building Moratorium
The residents of the Hamlet of Oyster Bay petitioned the Town of Oyster
Bay Board to impose a six- month moratorium on new construction and
expansion. In the interim, the town will examine the zoning code to determine
how to preserve some of the historic buildings in the hamlet and the character
of the community.
Representatives from other communities approached the board to
request a moratorium in their community.
One of the issues that prompted people to ask for a moratorium is the
proliferation of what are commonly referred to as " McMansions." These large
outsized houses are changing the character of the neighborhoods and
impacting on the assessed value of the surrounding homes.
It is not just an issue of concern to the people in the Town of Oyster Bay.
In fact, there was an article on the front page of the Washington Post about
what they refer to as the " Mansionization" taking place in Chevy Chase,
Maryland.
This is a complex issue that pits a people's property rights against the
community's interest in maintaining a certain character. The moratorium will
not solve the problem for the people who object to the rebuilt or enlarged
homes, but the dialogue it prompts may bring some consensus.
Traditional Candy Bar
Halloween is a time when ghosts,
princesses and superheroes will
come knocking on your door. With
childhood obesity on the rise there
is no reason why they should leave
with bags full of empty calories and
sugary candy. Instead, offer children
a healthier treat this Halloween such
as:
100% juice boxes
Packs of sugar- free gum
Cereal bars
Packages of hot chocolate
Granola bars
Mini pretzels bags
Boxes of raisins or trail mix
Snack- size goldfish or animal
crackers
Cheese or peanut butter cracker
packs
Non- food treats
Decorative pencils
Fun- shaped erasers
Stickers
Bubbles
Small boxes of crayons
Coins

with a quarterback sneak to run 50
yds. untouched into the end zone.
Ryan McManus joined the effort with

Is Your Home A
Burglary Target?
Tips to safeguard your home against a burglary
By Linda Mangano
Growing up in Bethpage, I
can honestly say that my family
never locked oar front door.
Back then we didn 7 have alarms
or intricate devices to protect our
homes. Back then, I guess we felt
as though we didn't need to.
Today, however, Long Island is
facing an increase in home
robberies. In fact, in just over ten
months thieves have invaded over
two dozen homes across Long
Island. Some of these break ins
actually occurred with the
homeowners in the home.
The Nassau County Police
Department seems to feel as

though there could be as many as
three different groups of armed
and masked men who are
carrying out these robberies and
who are in search of new targets.
Home invasions have occurred in
Levittown with others occurring
in Uniondale and Massapequa.
The Nassau County Police
Department offers the following
checklist to help residents
safeguard their homes against an
invasion. Since most burglaries
are crimes of opportunity,
residents need to make their
homes less attractive, which in
turn will make their home a less
likely target.

What burglars look for:
Burglars look for houses that have:
* The appearance of being unoccupied
* No lights on and are dark at sunset
* No car i n t h e driveway
* Doors and Windows blocked by shrubbery
* Mail sticking out of the mailbox
* Papers on the front lawn or stoop
* Curtains that are closed during the daylight hours
* Outside alarm siren boxes
" Target Hardening" your home:
To help prevent your home from becoming a target:
* Walk around your home
* Make a list for easy points of entry for an intruder
* Take care of the problems
Even if you have an alarm system, be alert when leaving or entering your home. If
you notice someone or something suspicious, report it to the police immediately.
Securing the outside of your home.
* Prune overgrown shrubbery that hides windows and doors.
* Make alarm stickers visible on doors and windows; they should be easily seen
from the street and sidewalk.
* Keep a car in the driveway, if possible
* Place a dog bowl or dog chain on your property to give the appearance of canine
security
* Do not have packages left in the doorway all day; arrange for a delivery times
when you or a neighbor can pick them up
* Do not keep garbage cans at the curb all day; if you cannot stay home, use
plastic bags instead of garbage cans
* Eliminate the outside mailbox: insert a mail slot in the front door or garage
* Instal outside motion detection lights at the corner of your home and high
enough so that the intruder is unable to unscrew the bulbs
* Have outside doors of solid core or metal clad; steel doors and frames are the
most secure while hollow doors with wood frames are easily kicked in
Securing points of entry into your home
* Do not have front doors with side glass panels since they are easy to break and
allow the intruder to reach inside and unlock the door
* Use dead bolts with a one- inch throw since the mechanism is difficult to pry or
jimmy open
* Ensure that sliding glass doors and windows have metal pins or a metal bar
installed to prevent being pried open
* Set inside lights on timers to turn them on at dusk
* Do not place valuables in bureau drawers in the master bedroom; this is the first
area where a burglar looks. Lock valuables in the attic or basement
To help prevent your home from becoming a target: Walk around your home. Make
a list for easy points of entry for an intruder. Take care of the problems.
Securing the inside of your home.
* Mark valuables with your driver's licence number to make them easy to trace if
found on a burglar
* Even if you have an alarm system, be alert when leaving or entering your home.
If you notice someone or something suspicious, report it to the police immediately.
Burglary prevention is an ongoing pursuit. The Nassau County Police Department
suggests that your keep this checklist handy for future inspections of your home.

Patrick Quinn, a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program
competition, is congratulated here by Bethpage High School Director of
Guidance Pam Puglisi and Principal John DeTommaso.
Congratulations to Bethpage High
School senior Patrick Quinn, who is
a semifinalist in the National Merit
Scholarship Program competition.
Patrick was selected based on his
outstanding result on the 2004
Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude
Test/ National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test ( PSAT/ NMSQT).
As a semifinalist, Patrick now has
the opportunity to continue in the
competition for one of approximately
8,200 Merit Scholarship awards,
worth $ 33 million, to be offered next
spring. More than 1.3 million
students around the country entered
the 2006 Merit Program in their
junior year by taking the 2004
PSAT/ NMSQT, which served as an
initial screening of program
entrants. Semifinalists are the
highest scoring entrants in each
state and represent less than one
percent of U. S. high school seniors.
Patrick is considering either
Harvard or Cornell and will likely
pursue a career in Biochemistry or a
research- related field. He is
currently enrolled in all AP science
classes. Additionally, he competes
in various computer programming
competitions, is involved in
" Mathletes" and is also a member of
the Bethpage High School
Masquer's Guild drama club.
