CBS Vandalism Update
Chamber Receives Several Anonymous Tips
By Linda Mangano
After last week's article in the
Bethpage Tribune, the Bethpage
Chamber of Commerce has
received several anonymous tips
pertaining to the events that led
to the destruction of the
" Welcome to Central Boulevard
School'' sign.
What we have learned thus far
is that the evening started out
with a large group of high school
aged youths as well as recent
graduates who opted to play a
game of manhunt on the school
property. A youth then
attempted to steal the " 50 Years
of Excellence" sign, which was
hanging below the larger sign.
One of the youths then
apparently decided to drop kick
the sign, which resulted in it
being broken into three pieces.
As leads are still being
received and investigated, the
school surveillance tapes are
being enhanced and analyzed, so
that the person or persons can be
positively identified. Residents in
the CBS area are also being
questioned to see if anyone may
have seen or witnessed what
went on.
The Chamber urges anyone
with any information to come
forward immediately. While it
may not be easy to come forward
it is however, the right thing to
do. As stated last week the
Chamber of Commerce is
offering a $ 500 reward leading
to the arrest and conviction of
this vandal. The Chamber also
greatly encourages the
responsible party to come
forward immediately, as it will
greatly benefit him or her. This
sign means a lot to many people
as well as to all the students of
CBS and coming forward and
taking responsibility for the
vandalism is not only the right
thing to do but will truly be
advantageous to the party
responsible. Please call the
Chamber at 433- 0010 or the
Eight Precinct at 573- 6800 if you
have any information to share.

Cedarmere grounds often inspired
Bryant's grandson Harold Godwin,
an accomplished watercolorist,
whose work is displayed at the
estate. All sessions will be held in
Cedarmere's Gothic Revival Mill,

Frances Bryant Godwin, great

Central Park Historical Society Update
June - 2005
MAY PROGRAM - The evening
began with a wonderful surprise.
Richard Kalen and Ernie Finamore
honored the society by presenting
Lenny Mulqueen and Ann
Albertson with two beautiful airplane
models. One was a model of the
Grumman FF1 and the other was the
F4F Wildcat. The FF1, was a two
seat fighter biplane with a retractable
landing gear, and was the first
Grumman production airplane which
had its beginning in Baldwin. The
F4F Wildcat was the first mono
fighter plane built with folding wings
in Bethpage. Leroy Grumman was
known for his innovated design of
aircraft and noted for his famed
retractable landing gear and his
design of the folding wings which
afforded more space on the aircraft
carriers.
Both plane models are beautifully
crafted and we hope to display them
with the model of the LM in the
Bethpage Library. We thank Richard
and Ernie for this wonderful
contribution to our society and the
Bethpage Community.
The program for the evening was
to introduce the new owners of two
new shops in downtown Bethpage.
Unfortunately John and Rene
Pufahl, the proprietors of Vintage on
Broadway, were not able to attend
the meeting, and they hope to have
another opportunity to tell us all
about their new shop. Fortunately,
Kathy and Hank von Thaden did a
great job on telling us all about their
new venture in Bethpage starting on
March 5, 2005. A venture that
started on March 5, but was a life
time dream of Kathy to one day have
a Christian Book Shop. She had the
name, The Christian Corner, but not
the store. Fortunately for her, Teri
Catapano and Carol Ann Catapano
Buttice, just purchased a new j
building for their real estate
business, Century 21 Metro Realty,
and had the corner store available
for rent. Kathy and Hank feej so
fortunate to find their corner store
and to have such great people as
landlords, friends and supporters of
their new venture. ^
Kathy and Hank along with
Debbie and Gabe Cavacchioli have a
wonderful selection of gift items,
books, videos, cards, Precious
Moments, Boyds Bears, craft items
made by local people. They also
have story time for the pre- school
child, craft programs in the evening
for children \ n grades 1- 4, and adult
bible Study! They . were very ••
* enthused telling us about their
plans, and they were very open for
suggestions as to how to make a
good shop a better shop. They
welcomed all to visit their shop, look
around, have a cup of coffee, and
make The Christian Corner a regular
stop. Kathy was pleased to
comment on how The Christian
Corner and Vintage on Broadway
compliment each other with the
beautiful gift items they both offer
for sale. A wonderful addition to our
downtown and we need the support
of the Bethpage community to make
it work for them and for us.
JUNE PROGRAM - The Central
Park Historical Society is pleased to
have the support of the Bethpage
Library and to have the opportunity
to cosponsor interesting programs
with them. The program we will
cosponsor in June will be, ' The
Hempstead Plains," presented by
Betsy Gulotta. Ms. Gulotta, former
Professor of Biology at Nassau
Community College, now
Conservation Project Manager, will
discuss the ecological and historical
significance of the Hempstead
Plains. She will relate the history
when it covered nearly 60,000 acres
and current efforts to preserve what
is left and plans for restoration and
reintroduction of valuable native
plants and animals.
Many of us growing up in
Farmingdale and Bethpage can
remember the auto trip to
Hempstead to shop, and traveling
over miles of flat land on a two lane
road with no traffic lights. This
country side was dotted with farms
and farm houses, small air strips, a
pocket of trees ( known as Island
Trees), the land was flat with fields of
grasses and wild flowers. How we
took this* landscape for granted.
Never to think this would, one day,
become endangered and we might
lose forever the plants and wild life
that inhabited the area.
Join us for a fascinating program
about this little- known area which is
an ecologically important part of
Nassau County. Bring a friend, all are
welcomed, enjoy the program, join
our society, and stay and have some
refreshments. Wednesday, June 22
at 7: 30 PM at the Bethpage Library
on Powell Ave. For info. Lenny
Mulqueen 516- 935- 2674 or Ann
Albertson 516- 933- 1795 e- mail .

MAP OF THE
VANDERBILT/ LONG ISLAND
MOTOR PARKWAY - Carol
Catapano Buttice loaned us an aerial
view map showing the
Vanderbilt/ Old Motor Parkway and
the surrounding area. The map
shows three time periods, 1926,
1950 and 2000. We displayed the
map at our May meeting and we will
have it to display at the June
meeting for the program on The
Hempstead Plains. A great way to
view the many changes that have
taken place on the plans and the
surrounding area.
HISTORIC MARKER- The
Bethpage Fire District has
contributed to documenting the
history of Central Park/ Bethpage by
placing a historic marker at the site of
the first fire house in Central Park.
The location is on Stewart Avenue
just north of the PAL building
diagonally across from St. Paul's
Lutheran Church. The dedication of
this marker took place on Memorial
Day after the Memorial Day Parade.
We thank the Bethpage Fire District
for their contribution to document
our proud local history. We also
thank Legislator Edward Mangano
who is always there to support our
organization, especially the
placement of Historic Markers. «
DISPLAY CASE - Sue Grant,
daughter of Joan Poppe, and the
historian for the Ladies Auxiliary Unit
# 86 will be setting up a display of
memorabilia in the display case in
the History Room at the Bethpage
Library. The History Room is located
across from the Reference Desk in
the library. Take some time to view
the material on display which has a
proud history dating back to the
early 1900' s. We thank the Ladies
Auxiliary for sharing their history with

HISTORIC METHODIST
CEMETERY - The rain predicted for
Saturday, May 14, did not
discourage a determined group to
assemble to start the clean up of the
Historic Methodist Cemetery. The
area now belongs to many who once
called Central Park/ Bethpage home
and Reverend Mary Crump, Pastor
of the Methodist Church, is
determined to clean up the much
neglected grounds. Nancy Carter,
assumed the leadership of
organizing the volunteers and she
did a great job. She also got the
support of the new Dunkin Donuts
store on Route 107, and they
donated plenty of hot coffee and
donuts to refresh the volunteers.
She also received a donation from
our local King Kullen Supermarket to
support our effort. We thank Nassau
County Legislator Ed Mangano and
Richie Pfender of Supervisor
Venditto's office for all their support.
This one day attempt to clean up is
the beginning of a commitment to
maintain the dignity of the cemetery.
If you would like to help or learn
more about this endeavor you can
contact Pastor Mary Crump at
mpcrump @ hotmail. com.

IT IS GREAT HEARING FROM
YOU - We received the following
story from Sally Felice Reinberg, and
we thank her for taking time to tell us
about her family who resided in
Bethpage.
" I lived in Bethpage from 1936 to
1958 at which time I married and
moved to an Amity Harbor apartment
and then to West Babylon. I worked
for Grumman, Plant # 1, from 1954 to
1960 ( Bookkeeping & Accounting).
My children are Robert and Deborah.
My parents owned Felice Tailors
and Cleaners on Broadway. I have 2
brothers, Frank and Louis and a
sister Margie ( residing in Arizona).
Both brothers were cops and Frank
moved on to detective ( both
retired). My sister owned Margie's
Beauty Salon next to pop's tailor
shop. Brother- in- law Joseph Gerardi
worked for Grumman.
I became a Suffolk County
Crossing Guard with the 1st precinct
on Rt. 109 in West Babylon. After 28
years on the job I retired on July 23,
2002 and I am enjoying myself and
keeping busy.
On October 1st, 2005,1 am

financial assistance to local police
officers and their families in times of
personal emergency. Now more

REMINISCENCES OF LEO
SCHOTTLAND - " The year was
1943 and our nation was engaged in
the most destructive war the world
has ever known. As a member of the
Air Force, I had come home to New
York City for a short leave, after
which I went with my rather new
bride to visit her sister in the tiny
hamlet of Bethpage, out in Nassau
County on Long Island.
Bethpage turned out to be a
quaint little place of perhaps some
5,000 citizens, with old homes, giant
ancient trees lining its main street,
potato and truck farms all about the
surrounding area and pervaded with
a feeling of sleepy contentment. It
was almost love at first sight and in
my secret thoughts I hoped one day
to return to its peaceful atmosphere.
It was such an old lovely place.
However, this wasn't to be for some
time; there was a deadly war to finish
( wars are never won) and a
reestablishing to civilian status when
it was over.
Our greatness prevailed, and
during the next several years I
revisited, as a civilian and between
jobs, the little hamlet I had never
forgotten. Eventually, in 1949, I
went to work for the local paint and
hardware store, in Bethpage,
commuting on the Long Island
Railroad in Toonerville Trolley, six
days a week. By years end, with the
help of our savings, a G. I. Loan and a
fat mortgage, we purchased the
store and moved into a little
apartment next door. By that time we
had increased our number to four,
the latter two being little Eddie and
his sister Bonnie, aged four and a
year after respectively. It was a real
gamble but worth the try, for look
what I had to support.
Small town living was peaceful,
occasionally we'd have some hot
PTA and School Board meetings;
we went berry picking along the old
Motor Parkway and alongside the
State Park on a little lane called
Plainview Road. We visited and
inspected the old Quaker
Cemeteries all around the hamlet;
made picnic excursions to
Roosevelt Beach in Bayville, Teddy
Roosevelt's home on Sagamore Hill
in Oyster Bay, fished in Massapequa
Pond, drove out to the Arboretum
and to the Hamptons, to Orient
Point on the northern tip and to
Montauk Point on the south end.
What changes man hath wrought
in a mere 30 years. Thousands of
homes have sprung up in little
Bethpage and where before we had
one schoolhouse and a tiny store
front post office on the corner of
Baldwin Place and Broadway, south
of the tracks; we now have a 20th
century railroad station ( however
small), a modern brick post office
building and seven schools to
educate our thousands of kids. But
times are changing and less and less
kids go to our schools now ( one is
closed) and families are not as
populous as in years gone by.
Progress has decimated our
beautiful trees on Broadway ( I call it
greed) and Central Avenue; the
handsome old Beau Sejour
Restaurant, home of our post office
in the 1860' s had been torn down
( Continued
( shamefully) ( stupidly); the old
cemetery on Revere Avenue has
been vandalized and destroyed;
with its graves of Revolutionary and
Civil War heroes, and decency and
sentiment have gone by the board -
to put it kindly."
So many changes, some subtle
and some more dramatic, have taken
place over the years and history is
always in the making. Leo had a
wonderful way with words and
documenting his views and feelings
about so many things. We will
continue to share his writings with
you.
JUNE DAYS - June brings smiles,
hugs and salutes. June 14, Flag Day
a day we salute our flag and
remember what each star and stripe
stands for. June 19, Fathers Day, a
day to honor our fathers and
acknowledge they will always be a
from page B)
guiding force in our lives. June 21,
we celebrate the first day of Summer
with anticipation of the wonders and
adventures of the season. The
month of June we acknowledge the
completion of a course of study with
a degree or diploma at graduation. A
time for hugs, smiles and a pat on
the back. June 26,1995, at 11: 06
a. m. the last military airplane built on
Long Island, the E- 2C Hawkeye,
advance warning and control plane,
flew out of Northrop Grumman's
Calverton facility. Marking the end of
Long Island's long history as a
center for aircraft manufacturing.
Future E- 2C aircraft would be
assembled at Northrop Grumman's
St. Augustine, Florida facility.
CONDOLENCES - The Central
Park Historical Society sends
condolences to our president,
Lenny Mulqueen, his wife Laura,
children Cheryl, Craig and Bonnie
on the passing of his mom Nafra
Uccellini Mulqueen. Nafra is also the
mother to, our member, Diane
Sullivan and grandma to Calley and
David and great grandmother to
Nicholas and Andrew. Nafra grew up
in Central Park/ Bethpage and we
have all been touched by her good
small town values of family, friends,
church, community, and proud of its
history. A wonderful legacy to leave
to all who knew her. Nafra also had
many talents: she loved and trusted
nature with her beautiful gardens;
she was a gourmet cook and her
special recipes will continue to be a
part of the Mulqueen holiday meals;
she had a special touch with a piece
of material and a spool of thread.
These special attributes all live on.
We share the sadness of your loss.

IAN PEIKON
VALEDICTORIAN
Valedictorian: ian Peikon
Graduating high school with a
105.7 G. P. A. is no small
accomplishment, especially when a
student takes such challenging
classes as A. P. English and Honors
Physics. But one student in
Bethpage's Class of 2005 fulfilled
that goal. Meet Ian Peikon,
Valedictorian of the graduating
class. Ian is a remarkable student
who has challenged himself
throughout his time at Bethpage,
always displaying disciplined work
habits and exuding his passion for
learning. His leadership is not limited
to the classroom, however.
Ian has held many positions in
extracurricular activities, including
president of Students Putting an
End to Cancer, drum major of
Marching & Concert Bands, and
captain of the Marine Physical
Fitness Team. Ian has also been
active in the National Honor Society
and Student Council, among others,
and has worked a part- time job for
the past two years. When he
graduates, Ian will leave behind a
strong legacy at Bethpage High
School. As Guidance Counselor
Jennifer Payne states, " Ian is a
unique individual who will not only
be remembered for numerous
academic achievements but also for
his exceptional personal qualities:
PHILIP TJIMOS
SALUTATORIAN
Salutatorian: Philip Tjimos
Few high school students know
what they want to be when they
" grow up." For the Class of 2005
Salutatorian Philip Tjimos, however,
this is not the case. From the time
Philip was very young, he knew he
would pursue a career in science,
thanks to his life- long success in the
math and science fields. His
education at Bethpage has
reinforced this love, as Philip has
challenged himself with courses
such as AP Biology and AP
Chemistry.
Philip's other passion resides in
music. He is a drum major of the
school band, plays tenor saxophone
and bass guitar, and enjoys writing
his own music. Philip extends this
love by participating in the Tri- M
Music Honor Society. In addition, he
is captain of the Varsity Bowling
Team and the Varsity Volleyball
team. Guidance Counselor Jennifer
Payne notes, " Philip is an
exceptionally kind and optimistic
young man. He is a respectful,
friendly and easy- going person with
a delightful personality and a nice
sense of humor." Earning the
position as Salutatorian is a clear
indication of the high standards
Philip has set for himself. These
same standards guarantee that
Philip will have a " bright and
productive future," as expressed by
Ms. Payne.

Although the building may not
yet have reached its golden
anniversary, Howie Vogts Field at
Bethpage High School was the site
of the school's 50th Graduation
Commencement as the Class of
2005 moved up and onward in style.
Summer was in the air in more ways
than one. Under a 95 degree- plus
day, the season could not only be
felt in climate, but in spirit, as tour
great years were celebrated and
summed up by the words of some
very influential seniors who are now
promising young adults.
Student Council President
Katelyn Dunn, Valedictorian Ian
Peikon, and Salutatorian Philip
Tjimos all gave interesting
perspectives on the last four years at
Bethpage High School, and looked
forward to what they hope will be
even better years filled with greater
successes ahead. Principal John
DeTommaso reminded the
audience that this class was but five
days into its acclimation to a new
surrounding when they had to cope
with the tragedy of 9/ 11 to
compound to the challenge that had
already weighed on their minds.
New York State Senator Carl
Marcellino, a former educator
himself, served as the guest
speaker. Superintendent of
Schools Dr. Richard Marsh, who like
the Senator, sent the seniors on
their way with some sound words of
advice, was presiding over his first
commencement exercise as the
District's top official.

Bethpage Rotary Completes 50 Years
Of Service to Bethpage Community
8JJ5I
After fulfilling fifty years of service to the Bethpage
community, the Bethpage Rotary Club began its second
half- century on Saturday, June 25, with an installation
celebration at the home of outgoing president, Brent
Baynon. Brent and his wife Lisa Baynon entertained
the entire club with a live band, excellent food, and a
memorable ceremony inaugurating the new president,
John Mangano.
John is president of New Media Printing, home of the
Bethpage Tribune. He said he is pleased and honored
to be taking over the reins of Bethpage Rotary which is
at the beginning of a new era, and he has promised to
not only continue with the club's existing programs but to
expand into additional areas as well. John was sworn in
as Bethpage Rotary's new president at the ceremony
with his wife Cindy Mangano looking on, along with
their two children, Hailey and Jessica.
John has an enthusiastic staff that will be assisting
him in the humanitarian efforts of the club. Returning to
the position of vice- president is Brent Baynon, who is
responsible for inviting speakers to the club's weekly
meetings; and continuing in her role as treasurer is Luz
Rosenthal, who will begin her eleventh year in that
position.
Rounding out the officers is longtime Bethpage resident,
Frank D'Andria, who will continue as the club's
secretary. Frank is also on the board of Peopie organization
in Bethpage. He, along with his wife, Cathy
D'Andria, have been instrumental in furthering Bethpage
Rotary's various activities for many years.
The person responsible for keeping the club in order is Dr. Jay
Augenstein who will assume the position of Sergeant at Arms. Dr.
Augenstein and his wife, Gloria Augenstein, are the proprietors of
Augenstein Family Dentistry in Bethpage. Dr. Augenstein has also taken
over the club's annual swim- a- thon, a fund raiser at Bethpage High School
which raises funds to donate several scholarships each year to Bethpage
high school students and to students in surrounding areas.
6ne of those areas is Plainview which originally had a Rotary club of its
own but subsequently merged with Bethpage Rotary. It was a development
which delighted all, as the club acquired the talents of George Hannau who
brings the DECA students to the club each year from Plainview High
School. This year George will also assume the position of Vocational
Director and he is also expected to continue in organizing fund raisers as he
has in the past. George and his wife, Pat Hannau, have given Bethpage
Rotary resilience for many years.
Frank Morrone, a Bethpage businessman, will continue in his role as
Club Director, a position responsible for the club working smoothly on a
week- to- week basis. Both Frank and his wife, Michelle Morrone, have been
longtime backbones of the club. Frank is skilled in Rotary tradition which is
important in maintaining Bethpage Rotary's connection to Rotary throughout
the world.
This year as Community Director, is longtime Bethpage resident, Jaime
Ortiz. Jamie has been the club's liaison with the Gift of Life, a position he
inherited from his recently deceased Rotarian father, Jaime Ortiz, Sr. Gift of
Life is a Rotary project engaged in saving children's lives through open
heart surgery. Children are brought here from third world countries with little
in the way of medical expertise.
Also continuing with Rotary's Gift of Life project is Dan Carroll who will be
( left to right) Dan Carroll, International Director; Brent Baynon, Vice President; Frank
Morrone, Club Director; John Mangano, President, and Dr. Jay Augenstein, Sergeant at Arms,
as they give their acceptance speeches at Bethpage Rotary's 50th anniversary celebration.

reflects the club's 50 years of service to Bethpage community.
Bethpage Rotary was honored by the worldwide organization, Rotary
international, in recognizing the club's half century of humanitarian
endeavors.
the club's International Director for his tenth year. Dan has traveled throughout
the world on behalf of the Gift of Life, mostly to the Dominican Republic.
But in a journey to the Philippines, he met his wife- to- be which necessitated
a second trip to the Philippines to bring back Libby Carroll. Now Libby is
contributing as proofreader and advisor of the Rotary Wheel, an internal
publication of the club.
The energy and spirit of Bethpage Rotary does not end with its officers
and directors. Chris Drake, for example, a former president, works hand in
hand with Gary Bretton and the Bethpage Foundation to raise funds each
holiday season for needy Bethpage residents. Chris and his wife, Jan
Drake, are proprietors of Bethpage Agency.
Other active members include past president, Ken Blau and his wife
Miriam Blau, who contribute to the club in various capacities each and
every week. Ken has recently been honored as past teacher and assistant
principal at Central Boulevard School where he served for many years.
Also active are Don Tichy, Bethpage Schools board member; Marty
Meyer, another past president; Lee Ramirez who works fervently with the
Gift of Life; and Tony Leotta who has set up the Bethpage Rotary website.
( Anybody looking for further information about the club and/ or would like to
be considered for membership may contact John Mangano at 681- 0440.)

Rich Furrey will always be in our hearts
as we celebrate our 50 Years of Service
to the Bethpage Community.

Saint Anthony
O Holy Saint Anthony Gentlest of
Saints your love for God and charity
for his creatures, made you worthy,
when on earth, to possess
miraculous powers. Miracles waited
on your word, which you were ever
ready to speak for those in trouble or
anxiety. Encouraged by this
thought, I implore of you to obtain
for me ( request). The answer to my
prayer may require a miracle, even
so, you are the Saint of miracles. A
gently and loving Saint Anthony,
whose heart was ever full of human
sympathy, whisper my petition into
the ears of the sweet infant Jesus,
who loved to be folded in your arms,
and the gratitude of my heart will
ever be yours. 13 day Novena 3 Our
Fathers 3 Hail Mary's. Glory the
Father. Publication must be
promised. RM
