Tigers on the Prowl at Bethpage Tribune Office
Members of Tiger Cub Den 1 are pictured above sitting on the press during their recent tour of the Bethpage Tribune.
On February 2nd members of
the Tiger Cubs Den 1 took a tour of
the Bethpage Tribune as part of
their " Go See" about communication
lesson. The very well behaved and
attentive boys learned all about their
local newspaper as well as about
how a newspaper gets printed.
Tiger Den 1 explored the
typesetting department, graphic arts
department and then finished their
tour with a first hand look at how the
" press" rolls. The boys had many
questions and interesting
comments about newspapers as
well as about all of the steps that are
involved in getting out a community
newspaper each week. They also
discussed recycling and other
important issues all related to the
field of print journalism.
At the conclusion of their tour
each boy received a small token to
remember their visit to the
Bethpage Tribune. We sincerely
hope that they enjoyed their little
visit as much as we enjoyed having
them. They're NUMBER ONE in our
book!

Historian Donald Dwyer's

St. Martin's Basketball
Our St. Martin's Boys' basketball
regular season is about to end.
Teams were represented in grades
four through eight with at least two
teams at each grade level. All of the
coaches should be commended for
doing an outstanding job. Records
are not kept in the fourth grade
level, but both coach's Tom
McManus and Charlene DeCastro
are finishing strongly- teaching
excellent basketball fundamentals
to their players.
In the fifth through eighth grades
the CYO has cut the number of
playoff teams from four to three in
each division making it more difficult
for our teams to make the playoffs.
Some of our squads may just miss
out.
Dan Gerber's " Gold" fifth- graders
are coming on strong after a slow
start- winning their last three games.
Gerber's " Guys", have a chance to
finish better that. 500 and have
improved tremendously. Coach
Gregg Tracy's " Blue" are 7- 3 with
two games remaining against the top
two teams- St. Edward and Holy
Family. Tracy's fifth- graders could
finish as high as third in their division
with a chance to qualify for the
playoffs.
We didn't buy a new location...
we earned it.

In the sixth grade Ed Conway's
" Blue" team may just miss the
playoffs, they are currently in fourth
place with a record of 6- 4. If Lou
Mayr's Sixth " Gold" win their last two
games they will finish with an
outstanding record of 9- 3.
All three seventh grade teams
will finish with winning records. Bob
Luti's " Blue" seventh graders are
trying to complete an undefeated
regular season. Their team play led
to an 11- 0 record. To succeed
without a loss the " Blue" crew will
need to defeat power house St.
Boniface who has a 10- 1 record.
This contest for the regular season
title will be held on Saturday, Feb.
12 at 2: 00pm at Central Boulevard
School. Dan McGrath's Seventh
grade " White Warriors" could finish
8- 4. Solid team play has put them in
contention for a playoff spot. Coach
Larry Reilly's " Gold" seventh- grade
boys' team is 6- 4. With two games
remaining the squad could be
another St. Martin boys ' team to
finish with a winning record.
One of our 8th grade teams, the
" Blue" squad was coached by Andy
Haugen, aided by Assistant Coach
Tom Gallo and record keeper Ed
Conway. The team is currently 605.
Using a two- team platoon system,
Coach Haugen was able to utilize
the athleticism of his 12 players and
play all boys in every game. Our
other St. Martin 8th grade team, the
" Gold" squad was coached by Tom
Grillea and are 5- 5 for the season
with two games left.
Good luck to the St. Martin
playoff contenders. Thanks for your

The Kings Park 15K is a perfect
tough training run for those who are
setting their sights on a Spring

features some of the most beautiful
vistas - and most challenging hills -
on Long Island's North Shore. Kings

The prestigious law firm of Lazer,

once again be taking the challenge
of the hills of Kings Park.
The Run will once again be
staged by the Greater Long Island
Running Club, with Club Executive
Board member Steven Toto serving
again as the Director of the Run.
Every entrant in the 15K Run will
receive one of the distinctive high

designed for the Kings Park Run,
and every entrant in the Fun Run will
be presented with a special
commemorative medal when he or
she crosses the finish line.
Awards will be given to the top
male and female finisher, to the top
three male and female finishers in
each of 14 five year age groups, up
through age 75 and older, and the
top three male and female finishers
in each of two " Clydesdale" weight
divisions, and the top three male
and female wheelchair racers.
There will once again be $ 100
cash prizes for the first place Male
and Female runners, $ 50 for the first
place Male and Female Masters
runners, $ 50 for the first Male and

record.
The entry fee for the 2005 15K
Run has been set at $ 18 ($ 16 for
GLIRC members) if you sign up by
March 5, $ 20 between March 6 and

Barbershop Harmony Is
Alive and Well And
Bethpage Residents Are Singing!
i: v: S:' il! II
The Chorus of the Mid Islanders,
a barbershop chorus, recently
appeared at the Bethpage Public
Library in its Sunday afternoon
entertainment program.
Approximately 30 men appeared on
stage as well as several chapter
quartets. Together they provided a
program of songs done in the
barbershop harmony style.
What is barbershop harmony? It is
a unique form of music that
originated in the late 1800' s and
early 1900' s; music presented
vocally in four part harmony ( lead,
tenor, baritone, bass) by male
voices. We think of it as a quartet;
i. e. four men singing without
instrumental accompaniment,
producing chords not heard in other
types of vocal music, but, it also
includes choruses numbering 12 to
more than 100 men.
In 1938, four men meeting in
Tulsa, Oklahoma liked barbershop
harmony so much that they decided
to invite other men to join them. This
was the start of an organization
called the Society for the
Preservation and Encouragement of
Barbershop Quartet Singing in
America, known today as the
Barbershop Harmony Society.
Today this organization numbers
more than 30,000 men in over 900
chapters throughout the United
States and several foreign
countries. The uniqueness of this
style of music is its close harmony,
the use of the predominant seventh
chord, and the tenor singing above
the melody.
Each year many chapters, their

competition. First in district, which in
this area includes the mid- Atlantic
states. The winners of that
competition go to international
which brings choruses and quartets
from all over the United States,
Canada and many foreign countries.
Because of its aging members,
and the pressures of more modern
types of music, the society is not
experiencing the sustaining
membership and the growth it would
like to see. Because of its important
role in musical history in the United
States, we are striving to enhance
membership and promote
recognition of this form of music. We
would encourage schools and
colleges to include barbershop
harmony as a part of their music
curriculum. The local chapters stand
ready to assist in initiating such
programs.
The Nassau Mid Island chapter
welcomes men ranging in age from
teens to seniors to visit any Tuesday
night to see, hear and sample what
barbershop harmony is all about. If
you would like more information, you
may contact Ed Andreassen of
Bethpage at 938- 3408. Ed has
been a member of the Nassau Mid

years and sings bass in the
Lighthouse quartet. Does he like it?
You bet. The Nassau Mid Island
Chapter and their quartets are
available for performances for
various organizations, special
occasions, celebrations, civic
observances, etc. Our quartets will

Letter To The Editor
Dear Linda,
The purpose of this letter is to express my dismay at the recent
attendance at the informative seminar on gang awareness conducted on
Wed., Feb. 2th at the Plainedge Middle School. Legislator Edward P.
Mangano conducted this seminar in conjunction with members of the Nassau
County Detectives' Association ( volunteering their time), with the assistance
of Bethpage Fire Department Commissioner Vincent Valente. This event was
publicized in a timely fashion and I even received an email from the
Bethpage H. S. P. T. A.
As a resident residing on the street where a gang- related murder
recently ocurred, and as a parent of a high school student, I think the
attendance was deplorable. There were more senior citizens in attendance
than there were parents of either the Plainedge or Bethpage school districts.
Also, there was a minimal representation from either school district's
employees and/ or members of the Board of Education. This seminar was
purposeful, educational and professionally conducted by Legislator
Mangano and several Nassau County Police Detectives. A question and
answer period followed and many important aspects were discussed.
The problem of dangerous gangs conducting criminal activity is ongoing,
expanding, and Our connumity and our children are not exempt from the
crimes relating to their activity or from solicitation to join gangs. The parents
who were not able to. attend for one reason or another truly did themselves a
disservice.

Winter at Bethpage Nursery School is full of fun. Playing
with snow indoors is so cool and a lot warmer. We put snow in
our water table and formed snow people, snow castles and
snow forts.
We read The Mitten and dramatized it by pretending our
parachute was the mitten and we were the animals!

LaSalle Corner
St. John Baptist de LaSalle Regional School sends LIPA
representative to teach students electricity safety.
To kick off the Parents as Reading Partners program,
children's author, Barbara Garriel, visited St. John Baptist de
LaSalle Regional School in Farmingdale. She shared with the
students the process she goes through in turning a creative
idea into a published book. The students were fascinated
about, and then seeing, some of the illustrations in Ms.
Garriel's non- fiction books: " Wolves and Their Ways,"
" Underwater Cities - The Coral Reefs," " Endangered Sea Life,"
and " The Underwater Life of Rivers." However, the highlight of
Ms. Garriel's visit was listening to her read her fiction book, " I
Know a Shy Fellow Who Swallowed a Cello," and then
participating in singing along with the song that accompanies
the book.
