Superintendent of Schools Dr.
Richard S. Marsh, Board of

Assistant Superintendent for
Instruction and Technology Terry

Jody Smith, Director of Science
Janice Yale, Director of English

" This year, we have a good blend of
new teachers just embarking on
their careers, some experienced
teachers, and even some teachers
who are entering the profession after
working in the business world."
There was even a little bit of
comic relief as Dr. Marsh

of the inservice training
opportunities available to them

EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK
By Linda Mangano
It is almost unimaginable to envision entire communities and cities
under water. People stranded on their rooftops clutching signs
begging for help while exhausted and hungry families search for
missing loved ones. That tragically is the scene in New Orleans and
the surrounding areas, which were devastated as hurricane Katrina,
ripped through the Gulf Coast leaving lives shattered and entire
communities wiped out in its aftermath.
What President Bush has deemed one of the worst natural
disasters in our nation's history has left New Orleans almost 80%
under water and is estimated to have claimed thousands of lives.
Experts are saying that it will take years for the Gulf Coast to recover
from this hurricane and hundreds of families are left completely and
totally devastated. Army engineers are desperately struggling to fix the
levee breach as 15,000- pound sandbags are being put into place to
stop the flow of water into downtown New Orleans. Sanitary
conditions are worsening as a mix of sewage, rotting foods and victims
are standing in the floodwaters, which could pose a serious bacterial
health threat.
Power is estimated to take weeks to restore and in Louisiana almost
400,000 people remain without it. In Mississippi almost 1 million
remain in the dark and in Alabama estimates have stated that almost
half a million are without any power. Georgia and Florida have also
been severely affected by Katrina, as too has Georgia. The destruction
was catastrophic and widespread. The numbers are mind- boggling
and the help that these people will need is enormous. Looting has
begun in the streets with desperate people ripping the steel gates off
stores in search of food and water. Sadly by others stealing
electronics, clothing and shoes.
How can these areas recover? I do not think that America can
recover alone. It is my hope that countries from around the world will
come to our aid. America has never turned it's back to our neighbors
in times of need and now it is our time of need. Katrina has ravaged
the entire Gulf Coast and it will take a huge and global effort to
restore these areas.
Miles away as we sit and watch the reports on our televisions or as
we read the stories of hardship, frustration, loss and despair we too
can help. There are many agencies, which are collecting funds to help
the victims of Katrina. If everyone gave just a little it would amount to
a lot. Yet, in addition to contributions we all need to keep the victims
and families of this deadly hurricane in our thoughts and in our
prayers. Perhaps it is in our prayers that the most help will be given to
those most devastated.
The following organizations are presently collecting funds for
Katrina relief:

Virgin
( Never known to fail)
Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt.
Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of
heaven, blessed mother of the Son
of God, immaculate virgin, assist me
in my necessity. Oh star of the sea,
help me & show me herein, you are
my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of
God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I
humbly beseech you from the
bottom of my heart to succor me in
this necessity. There are none who
can withstand your power. Oh show
me herein you are my mother. Oh
Mary conceived without sin pray for
us who have recourse to thee. ( 3
times). Oh Holy Mary I place this
cause in your hands. ( 3 times). Holy
Spirit, you who solve all problems,
light all roads so that I can obtain my
goals. You gave me the divine gift to
forgive and forget all evil against me,
and that in all instances of my life,
you are with me. I want in this short
prayer to thank you for all things as I
confirm once again that I never want
to be separated from you in eternal
glory. Thank you for your mercy
toward me and mine. The person

Ocean to Sound Relay
Farrel I Fritz, PC
All smiles as they announce the renewed sponsorship of
Farrell Fritz, P. C. for the 2005 Relay are ( L to R) Farrell Fritz
partner Steve Melore, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Executive Director Kerri Kaplan, Relay Director Alan End,
Silvania Gullo of Ronald McDonald House, Farrell Fritz partner
Ted Berkowitz, and GLIRC President Mike Polansky.
Runners from Bethpage,
LEQAl NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTIHF
Plainview- Old Bethpage,
Farmingdale and nearby
communities are cordially invited to
participate in the 20th annual Farrell
Fritz, P. C. Ocean to Sound Relay -
Long Island's biggest running
extravaganza! The event will be held
on Sunday, September 25, 2005,
and Farrell, Fritz, P. C, one of Long
Island's leading full service law firms,
has once again signed on to be the
title sponsor.
The Farrell Fritz, P. C. Ocean to
Sound Relay brings the entire Long
Island region together in an annual
September tradition, with 150 teams
of eight runners each traversing a 50
mile course that starts at 8: 00 AM at
Jones Beach State Park, heads
north and east through Wantagh,
Seaford, Massapequa, Farmingdale
and Old Bethpage before crossing
into Huntington, hitting the Long
Island Sound at Lloyd Harbor,
returning to Nassau County via Cold
Spring Harbor and Syosset, and
then heading north again to a
dramatic finish on the grounds of
Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park
in Oyster Bay. Each runner on the
team covers a leg of between five
and seven miles.
Relay Director Alan End of the
host Greater Long Island Running
Club couldn't be more pleased
about this 20th anniversary. " The
Farrell Fritz, P. C. Ocean to Sound
Relay is a great venue for team spirit,
a terrific sense of camaraderie, and a
unique opportunity for runners to
get a real sense of the scenic
beauties and diversity of Long
Island," observed End. " And the
post- race party is something else! All
in all, you are absolutely guaranteed
to have a great day!"
Title sponsor Farrell, Fritz is
recognized as one of the most
respected, progressive and dynamic
law firms on Long Island. Farrell Fritz
is home to approximately 75
attorneys offering strong
experience and depth in a diverse
range of practice areas such as
corporate and banking, litigation,
real estate, zoning and land use,
trusts and estates, and tax certiorari.
The staff of Farrell Fritz is committed
to community service and is actively
involved in many of Long Island's
charities, such as the Farrell Fritz
Ocean to Sound Relay.
At Farrell Fritz's request and with
GLIRC's enthusiastic endorsement,
a significant portion of the proceeds
from this year's Relay will once again
be turned over to the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society and Ronald
McDonald House, two of Long
Island's important charities.
Awards in this year's Relay will be
presented to the top three male,
female and coed open and masters
teams, senior teams, law
enforcement teams, corporate
teams, and physically challenged
teams. There will also be a special
award for the team that best
captures the " Spirit of the Relay."
But awards aren't the real attraction
for most teams, who will be
competing for the fun of it, to enjoy a
great day on the beautiful roads of
Long Island, and to be there for " the
best post- race party in the
Northeast" at Theodore Roosevelt
Memorial Park.
The entry fee is only $ 320 per
team ($ 40 per runner) through
September 9, which covers entry
into the race, a special
commemorative shirt for each
runner, and entry into the post- race
party. The entry fee goes up to
$ 360 per team after September 9,
so get your entry in early!
Every local runner is most
cordially invited to join Relay Director
Alan End and more than a thousand
other runners, for the best single
day of running on Long Island. Call
Linda at the GLIRC office ( 516) 349-
7646 for entry forms
