EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

( By Linda Manfjano
Let's pause for a moment and indulge ourselves with a little trip
down technology memory lane. Try if you will to remember a time
when you had no cell phone. A time when you didn 7 even have an
answering machine let alone a fax machine and a computer in your
own home. Remember a time with no text messaging, no faxes to
receive and no e- mails to send or read through. And while you are
remembering try to also think back to the time when you could actually
pick up your telephone and talk to a real live telephone operator. A
time when you could call 411 and speak to a human instead of a voice
activated computer system that rarely works. And remember those
days of the past that allowed you to talk to a company representative
instead of having to choose through eighteen different menu options
before ever hearing a real live voice. Ahhhh, those were the days!
Yes, yes 1 do admit to liking many of the comforts and conveniences
that modern technology and the computer age have afforded us, yet it
seems to me that life was still pretty good without caller ID and call
waiting. Holy cow... imagine hearing a bust signal. Do they still have
those ? 1 mean years ago it was okay to be out. You didn't have to weed
through twenty messages on an answering machine to find out who
wanted to speak to you. They would simply have to call back at
another time. And if you were on the phone... well tough luck... call
back later. Imagine the notion that you would be unreachable.
Today life is quite different. Cell phones have made it possible to
stay in touch with everyone all of the time. And that, my friends is a
double- edged sword. 1 love the fact that in the case of an emergency I
am merely one call away. ( That in and of itself makes up for any of the
inconvenience of being reachable always). Yet there are times when we
all just want to escape and be alone or be uninterrupted. That is the
time when we need to turn off the cellphones and relax. But most of us
don't do that. We are so used to being reachable that we are quilted
into remaining reachable always. We have come to completely rely on
our cell phone and 1 admit to being guilty of using the cell phone to
keep track of just about everyone in my family except the dog. It's a
great way to keep connected but every now and then are we allowed to
disconnect?
And then there are the e- mails. Holy Toledo, keeping track of all of
that is sometimes completely overwhelming. In fact if I don't check on
my emails in a day 1 enter the deadly zone called " E- MAIL
OVERLOAD" Most of the e- mail is junk, except of course for the very
important " STORE COUPONS" and " SALE" information that I
receive. And it can take quite some time to weed through all the mail
that has been sent. Remember the days when keeping in touch required
making that phone call, writing a letter, which required a pen and a
stamp or as unimaginable as it seems, a personal visit!! NOT ANY
MORE! Everyone is just one click away and that too can be a great
thing except for when we use emails to replace the importance of
communicating with a personal handwritten letter, in person or voice-to-
voice.
And I am sure everyone reading this has had the blood pressure
raising experience of trying to call a major company with a question
or a problem, only to hear, " press one to reach billing, press seven to .
reach sales, press twelve if you need to hear this message again or
press eighteen if you don't know which number you were supposed to
press in the first place!" And while you press all those numbers the
only thing you really wanted to hear is a real live and breathing
person saying, " May I help you?" I get very frustrated when 1 am
trying to communicate with a customer service computer. 1 deal much
better with humans and it seems humans like me a lot better, too. I
have had more arguments with computerized messages than 1 would
like to admit. And the most frustrating part is that they just don 7 argue
back! 1 miss the days of talking to the 411 operator. Now when I call,
I get the recording only to hear her say " 1 didn 7 get that. " Then I
wait, say it again, she says hold on and after about four tries 1 finally

Parents For Megan's Law BiEMBMaraigjaraMBrararaMararararaEiagMt^
In 1995, New York State
Governor George E. Pataki signed
the Sex Offender Registration Act
( SORA) which is more commonly
referred to as " Megan's Law." The
legislation enables citizens to gain
information about registered sex
offenders living within their
communities. Currently, under New
York State law* convicted sex
offenders must register with the
New York State Division of Criminal
Justice upon moving into a new
community. The state informs the
police department which in turn
forwards certain information to the
local school districts for distribution
to concerned parents. v
This system, while somewhat
effective, leaves numerous
loopholes that must be addressed.
Current legislation on the County
level is attempting to address
concerns regarding the state law.
One organization that is committed
to protecting the innocence of
children is Parents for Megan's Law.
This non- profit organization
disseminates information on
convicted sex offenders through an
email alert system in addition to
fighting for the rights of children on
the local, state and federal levels.
The Parents for Megan's Law
website has current information on
convicted sex offenders living
throughout New York State, and
contains links to other state
registries. By signing up for the
email alert program, parents,
grandparents or any other
concerned citizens will receive an
offenders name, date of birth, zip
code and a link to the Parents for
Megan's Law website where the
offender's entire profile ( including
photo) can be viewed.
To register for the email alert
program, you can go to the Parents
for Megan's Law website
www. parentsformeganslaw. com and
download the registration form or call
their office at ( 631) 689- 2672.
As always, if you have any
questions or comments about this or
any other issue, please do not
hesitate to call Legislator Mangano's
office at ( 516) 571- 6217.
Identity Theft is One of the
Fastest Growing Crimes in the US
Identity theft is one of the fastest
growing crimes in the United
States.
Nearly 10 million Americans were
victims of some sort of identity theft
last year alone. There are a number
of ways you can protect yourself
against identity theft crimes.
• Never give out personal
information over the phone unless
you initiated the contact or you know
who is on the line.
• Keep your social security card in
a secure place, not on your person.
• Only give out your social
security number when it is
absolutely necessary.
• Guard your mail and trash from
theft, promptly pick up mail, and
shred documents containing
personal information.
• Carry only the credit cards you
need.
• Place passwords on your credit
card, bank, and phone accounts to
avoid theft.
• Pay attention to your billing
cycles. Missing bills may be an
indication that a theft has occurred.
• Be wary of promotional scams
that ask for personal information.
• Keep your wallet or purse in a
safe place at work.
• Cancel all unused credit
accounts.
In addition to these steps, it is
wise to periodically order a credit
report. These reports will allow you
SUBSCRIBE TO

get a human. I wonder if all of this saves money and if it is more cost
effective.
Please don't misunderstand my opinion however. I am quite happy
with being able to use all of the modern creature comforts that we in
the 21st century have grown accustomed to. I love to shop on the
Internet. I love to call my kids or my husband to see what is going on
and yes even though I hate to admit it... sometimes the 411 recording
does actually give me the correct number on the first try. I just think
that sometimes we all need to take a mental health trip down memory
lane to remember why it is important to sometimes be unreachable.
Why it is important to write a personal letter, visit a friend or talk to a
human. I think we need to remember why it is okay to reach a busy
signal, why it is fine to turn off the cell phone now and then and why
maybe it would be better to say I love you in person rather than to text
message it:
The world keeps moving and as time goes on technology improves
and things modernize. I guess what I am trying to say is that as the
world becomes more technologically advanced we have to make an
effect to remember the past and the importance of human interaction,
the value of uninterrupted family and quality time and the importance
of face to face conversations. And if you don't agree with me you can
reach me on my cell, send your comments via e- mail or send me a fax
to share your opinion. Better yet, just talk to me by the cold- cut
counter at King Kullen. To me it is more fun that way anyway!!

GET READY!
GET SET! GO!
This weekend the usually car
filled parking lot adjacent to the
Long Island Rail road will be
transformed into a playground of
fun for the young and the young
at heart. That's right... the
Bethpage Chamber of
Commerce Summer Festival
that is taking place on August
12 and 13 from 6pm to
midnight This labor of love has
turned into a tradition that the
Bethpage Chamber of Commerce
feels is a true tribute to Bethpage
and its residents. However, this
year the generosity of Bethpage
business owners and merchants
in sponsoring the festival has
been truly overwhelming. Special
thanks and sincere gratitude
must be given to the Festival ' s
2005 sponsors Bethpage Federal
Credit Union, Cablevision
Northrop Grumman, Bank of
New York, King Kullen, B. K.
Sweeney's, HomeStar Financial
Commerce Bank and Starbucks,
Their support and generosity has
proven to be instrumental in
getting this festival underway
and helping to defray the ever-mounting
costs of putting on this
two day extravaganza and they
desei" ve our appreciation and
support.
Once again the Chamber of
Commerce is offering a $ 20 pay-one-
price bracelet as well as
individual tickets for sale. Each
bracelet, however, will be good
for a one- day admission and
cannot be used again on the
second night. BE SURE TO
CLIP OUT THE FESTIVAL ,
COUPON IN THIS
NEWSPAPER FOR A $ 1.00
DISCOUNT This coupon
comes to you through the
generosity of the Bethpage
Chamber of Commerce and is
being issues as a way to thank
Bethpage residents for their
support and patronage
throughout the year.
This year's festival promises to
be bigger and better than ever
before. As always Newton and
Sons Midway and Amusements
provides the Chamber with new
rides each year ( WE WILL
BE FEATURING BUMPER
CARS FOR THE FIRST TIME
EVER!!) as well as entertaining
games and vendor booths. This
year they have added more rides
for your enjoyment. There will be
food for every) imaginable
appetite as well as a place for
you to sit back and rest your
tired feet for a moment. The
Chamber is said to even have a
few surprises up their sleeves
and who knows who we ' 11 see
entertaining the crowd.
Best of all, the talent of
EXCALIBUR DJ will have the
entire crowd on their feet
dancing and even singing to the
music. Vic Macaluso of
Excalibur DJ has been a dear
friend to the Chamber of
Commerce and the community of
Bethpage and his fabulous music
has now become a much-anticipated
part of this Bethpage
tradition. As always the Chamber
will be featuring over 35 vendor
booths offering information,
merchandise and even a free
spinal screening!
On Saturday night the skies
will explode with the impressive
fireworks provided to the
Chamber by world renowned Bay
Fireworks. Each year the display
has been getting better and better
and this year it is said to be so
spectacular it 11 knock your
socks off.
Best of all this Festival has
truly turned into a two- day
family event for the entire
community. Neighbors meet and
chat, children laugh and thrill at
the rides and you will get a
chance to meet many of the local
merchants who care so deeply
about this town and take the time
to volunteer and be a part of the
Chamber of Commerce. This
festival has been deemed the
third largest summer festival on
Long Island as it attracts over
25,000 people during the two-day
event.
So mark your calendar and
plan on attending an event that
has become a Bethpage tradition.
REMEMBER if there is rain....
let's keep our finger's

Grumman/ Navy Property Update
As of the printing of this
newspaper, Environmental issues
loom large. In my last update I
reported on the community planning
process. The visioning process
resulting in three redevelopment
plans presented to residents for
comments. Upon review of the plans
and listening to your comments, I
voiced my concerns that all the plans
were not realistic as they ignored on-site
and off- site environmental
conditions in favor of an over
development and politically driven
desire to present large scale high
rise housing. Upon voicing
concerns that I will not support any
plan that places residents in harms
way, the committee has refused to
reconvene to discuss modifications
or alternatives nor has a preferred
plan been publicly presented. What
has happened to the administration
has agreed that more environmental
testing and cleanup is required. In
the meantime I encourage you to
visit the website
www. nassaucountyny. gov/ vision
105 to record your comments.
As many of you are aware,
despite great efforts to prevent
pollutants from escaping the
Grumman/ Navy property,
contaminants have entered our
aquifer. The stream of contaminants,
known as a plume, have escaped
and are traveling south toward the
Atlantic Ocean. A joint task force of
water districts, NYSDEC and U. S.
NAVY Have been closely monitoring
this process by placing dozens of
test wells along the path of the
aquifer. A " hot spot" ( a high
concentration of slow moving
contaminants) has been identified in
the vicinity of Seaford Oyster Bay
Expressway and LI PA High Tension
Poles in Bethpage. The US Navy is
erecting a stripping tower to protect
drinking water pump stations south *
of the site. The construction had led
to community concerns regarding
site maintenance and drilling. I
recently joined with residents to
present community concerns, the
NYSDEC and U. S. NAVY Have held
a public meeting to record
community concerns and have
presented a plan to correct many of
the onsite issues. However, the
future development of the stripping
tower remains an issue. The U. S.
Navy and NYSDEC have agreed to
