WITH MUSIC series. The program is
entitled " Arturo Toscanini- Legacy of
a Great Conductor." Toscanini was
one of the most influential
symphony orchestra and opera
conductors in recent memory. In his
long career, he conducted at La
Scala, New York's Metropolitan
Opera, the New York Philharmonic
and the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
He blazed a musical trail that set
standards for future conductors.
Then save Tuesday, August 16
at 2: 00 P. M. for a fascinating
program that is part of the continuing
ART IN THE AFTERNOON series.
This program is entitled " Dark Caves
- Universal Visions" presented by
Betty Ann Derbentli, Professor of
Art at Cowling College. Bison,
horses, cattle - race in wild profusion
across the walls of a cave deep
within the Dordogne Mountains of
France. The paintings are 35,000
years old but the earth colors are still
bright. Why would Paleolithic people
paint pictures in the deepest
recesses of cave? Did this art have a
serious purpose? These questions
will be discussed in a fascinating
exploration of the sophisticated art
of prehistoric man covering a vast
area - the famous caves of Europe
and Asia Minor. Here's an
opportunity to gain a new
appreciation of the ancient artist and
what he might have thought about
life, death and community.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John
Venditto invites residents to come
see the popular Australian music
group, Star Girls, in a special
appearance at Marjorie R. Post
Community Park, Unqua and
Merrick Roads, Massapequa, on
their " Rock This World" US tour. The
performance will be held on Friday,
August 12, beginning at 6: 30 p. m.
" Since the release of their breakout
album, The Star Girls From
Planet Groove, 1 this fantastic
singing group has performed in
more than 1,000 shows,"
Supervisor Venditto said.
" Furthermore, they were nominated
for three ARIA Music Awards,
including Best Children's Album in
2002, Best Single, and Best Music
Video."
The Supervisor went on to say
that the Star Girls' music video,
" Girls Like Me," went number one in
its first week and was in the
Interactive Top 10 on Video Hits for
a record- breaking 16 weeks. The
group has made appearances on
television shows such as Good
Morning Australia, Disney, Sunrise,
and many other Australian television
programs and recently
released their third album, " Rock
This World". In addition, they are
currently aired on Nickelodeon's
" Nick Junior" seven days a week.
" With universal appeal and safe,
family friendly themes, the Star
Girls appeal particularly to girls
ages two to 12," Supervisor
Venditto said. " They teach children
about self- empowerment and self-belief.
This is reflected in their
motto, ' If you believe in yourself,
you can do anything."'
The Supervisor noted that the
Star Girls' performance on August
12 will precede the Town's " Movies
by Moonlight," which will feature a
viewing of " Robots," a funny, heartwarming
animated feature about a
universe inhabited solely by robots
that will delight both children and
adults. Prior to the movie, youngsters
will have an opportunity to
meet and greet the members of
Star Girls, as well as get their autographs.
" I invite all residents to come out
and bring the family to see what
many have called ' the coolest kids
show this side of the galaxy' at
Marjorie R. Post Community Park
on August 12," Supervisor Venditto
stated. " What's more, just like all of
the Town of Oyster Bay's ' Music
Under the Stars' performances and
' Movies by Moonlight showings,
you and your family dan enjoy this
evening of entertainment free of
charge."

Registration Still Open For
Vytra- Tobay Triathlon & Relay
Registration is still open for the
18th Annual Vytra- Tobay Triathlon

Sunday, August 21; at Theodore
Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster
Bay, according toTown Councilman
Angelo A. Delligatti. The festivities
begin at 7: 30 a. m. sharp.
" The Triathlon, which is open to
everyone, is the biggest event there
is on Long Island and is always a
huge success" Councilman
Delligatti said. " The course
includes a 1K ( 5/ 8 of a mile) ' out
and back' swim in Oyster Bay
Harbor followed by a 15K bike trek
through Oyster Bay, Laurel Hollow

Central Park Historical Society Update
July- August 2005
There will be no meetings during
the month of July and August, we
will meet again on September 28 in
the Bethpage Library. We hope you
all have a great summer full of
wonderful adventures!
June Program - Betsy Gulotta,
Conservation Project Manager and
former professor of Biology at
Nassau Community College, gave a
very informative and interesting
presentation about the Hempstead
Plains. This was a program which the
Central Park Historical Society
cosponsored with the Bethpage
Library.
When I think of the Hempstead
Plains I immediately think about the
miles of farmland and fields of
grasses, that at one time, was all that
one saw as you traveled the
Hempstead Turnpike from
Farmingdaie to Hempstead. As I
listened to the narrative by Betsy
Gulotta, she brought back many
wonderful memories of growing up
in Farmingdaie surrounded by the
same fields of grasses, meadows of
wild flowers, berries, wild life and
running brooks. All gave way in time
to the development of homes,
schools, and strip malls.
Today, only about 80 acres
remain of the original 60,000 acre
prairie which, at one time, stretched
from the Queens border to the
Suffolk border. All a part of Long
Island, a land that was carved out by
the glaciers with the deposits of
sand, silt, and clay giving way to the
bluffs on the north shore, and the
wide beaches, dunes and salt
marshes of the south shore. A land
that was home to the Native
Americans, and the settlers who
came in the 1600' s to the plains
which provided a common pasture
for sheep and cattle and later the
land was tilled and farms developed.
The area was ideal for horse racing
and the first race tracks in our
country were built. The military
utilized this land, from the time of
Revolutionary War militia
encampments, to the development
of Mitchel Field as a military base
during World War II. the flat, treeless
land was ideal for airfields which
gave birth to The Cradle of Aviation
with a great history of its own. Then
the development of residential and
commercial buildings, growth of
communities such as: Plainview,
Plainedge, Garden City, Floral Park
and Levittown all were born out of
the plains.
As a result of development,
suppression of wild fires, invasion of
non- native species, the vegetation
and wild life of the plains is
endangered. The Friends of the
Hempstead Plains, a not for profit
organization, are dedicated to
preserving, restoring and offering
education programs about The
Hempstead Plains. The grasses and
plants they are trying to preserve,
survive the hot dry summers
requiring no fertilizer, are dominated
by the prairie type of bunch grasses
( Turkey Foot Grass, Switchgrass,
Indian Grass, Broomsedge, Little
and Big Bluestem). There was
Butterfly Weed, Milk Weed,
Goldenrod, Blue- Eye Grass,
Birdfoot Violets ( the official flower of
Nassau County), wild Indigo seeds
and leaves ( used to make dyes), the
varieties of daisies, Black Eyed
Susans, Queen Anne's Lace, as
well as mosses and lichens. All gave
a mass of continued color from
spring time on the Plains to the fall
with an abundance of black berries
to eat. The wildlife that inhabited the
Plains was the Upland Sandpiper,
Grasshopper Sparrows, Ring Neck
Pheasant, Red Tail Hawks, Barn
Owls, fox, rabbits, a colorful display
of butterflies, jumping grasshoppers
and crickets all made the Plains their
home.
We are grateful for the many
volunteers dedicated to make the
remaining acres of the Hempstead
Plains a living museum. More
information about the Hempstead
Plains is available in the internet.
September Program - When
we resume our regular monthly
meetings, after our summer break,
we will welcome Patricia Trifaro
O'Neill to address our membership
and tell us about her winning design
for the 9/ 11 Memorial which will be
built at Farmingdaie State University.
Pat was born and raised in
Farmingdaie, a Farmingdaie High
School graduate and is proud that
her design was selected to be built
in her hometown. Her design details
the drama of the day, the lasting
effect it has on our lives, and the
happenings since her design was
chosen. Mark your calendar for
September 28, at 7: 30 P. M. at the
Bethpage Library, Powell Avenue as
we pay tribute to all Americans
whose lives have been altered
forever by the events of that day.
Engine # 39 - We were happy
to read, in Newsday, that the
Railroad Museum of Long Island was
given a check for $ 800,000.00 by
Suffolk County Executive Steve
Levy for the restoration of Steam
Engine # 39. This steam engine was
one of the last to run on the Long
Island Rail Road, as the steam
engines were replaced in 1955 by
diesel locomotives. Engine # 39 will
now have its boiler and tender
renovated, 50 years after it was
retired. The museum hopes the
engine will be ready by the end of
December for a Riverhead to
Greenport trip. This should be a
grand sight and bring back many
memories of this mighty engine. Do
you remember the gate man who
lowered the gates as the train came
through town?
Days of July and August -
July 1, 1963 Long Island adopted
the use of the non- mandatory ZIP
Codes. In 1967, the codes became
mandatory for second and third-class
bulk mailers. July 4th a day we
proudly exclaim, " God Bless
America" as we celebrate our
independence and our nation's
birthday. July 20, 1969 the lunar
module, designed and built in
Bethpage by Grumman Aircraft, LM-
5 Eagle landed on the moon.
. August 3, 1956, President
Eisenhower signs a historic bill
which authorizes changing the
name of Bedloes Island, where the
Statue of Liberty stands, to " Liberty
Island." CPHS President, Lenny
Mulqueen, told one of his fond
memories' of playing baseball in the
summer in the early 1950' s, his team
was called the Panthers, named
after a Grumman plans and Grumman
sponsored their team. The Sweet
Shop, located on the comer of
Broadway and Baldwin Place,
promised ice cream sodas for one
week for all the players on the team if
they won the championship. They
won the championship and they all
got free ice cream sodas for one
week! A neat story about growing up
in our town Bethpage. We hope
your summer of 2005 will be a
memorable one!
Summer Time on Long
Island - A great time to visit the
many wonderful state, county and
town parks, beaches, and museums
which provide a wide variety of
activities and points of interest for
the whole family. Also, check out the
Long Island Railroad's excursions to
points of interest on Long Island.
Bob and I enjoyed a delightful
stroll through the beautiful,
manicured Ornamental Horticulture
Teaching Gardens at Farmingdaie
State University. We visited the
gardens on a beautiful June
afternoon. The roses were in full
bloom, while the spent azalea
blooms reminded us of the beauty
that has passed. The summer
annuals are in place waiting for their
cue from Mother Nature to bloom.
The variety of Hosta, grasses,
perennials, the aged trees and
evergreens, the wild strawberries
which crept about under the trees,
the water gardens and the statuary
all added their special touch to the
gardens. I enjoyed reading the
bronze plaques which were
dedicated in memory of teachers at
the university. A time to pause and
reflect on the impact people have on
our lives all in such a beautiful
setting. You can visit the gardens
daily from 9: 00- 4: 30.
Membership - We are pleased
to add Al Bellini residing in Colorado,
Ed Buffum from Oklahoma, Dr. and
Nancy Giminaro, Almedia Sturgeon
Howard in Arkansas, Marvin and
Lenore Jaffee, Bonnie Johnson,
Mark and Richard Kalen, Dorothy
Rode, and Ruth Schaaf residing in
Florida to our list of members. Thank
you for your support. For the year
2005 we have an enrollment of 213
members.
It is great hearing from you
- We received the following
responses from our new members:
Ed Buffum and Bonnie Johnson
thanks the Historical Society for our
endeavors. Almedia ( Sturgeon)
Howard told us that she received a
copy of our Newsletter from her
sister- in- law and enjoyed reading
about the many people and places
she remembered in Bethpage. She
was born in Central Park 3- 19- 25.
Ruth Schaaf, who has lived in Florida
since 1982, wrote the following:
" Hello Fellow Bethpagians!" Wanted
you to know how much I enjoy
reading your Newsletter even tho
many names are foreign to me.
When I read an occasional familiar
name, it takes me back to a pleasant
time when I lived in Bethpage. I
remember the huge celebration
when " Central Park's" name was
changed to " Bethpage" and feeling
a little sad for I liked being from
" Central Park."
I enjoyed reading Leo
Schottland's comments and I agree
with him. He has always been a very
compassionate soul, as evident in
obtaining my father- in- law's home on
Broadway, Bethpage, to help young
unfortunate youths.
I noticed that one of your next
columns will be about the
" Hempstead Plains." My grandfather
lived in East Meadow, east of
Hempstead. He had a peach
orchard, the most delicious
preaches anyone ever ate. Cars
came from New York City and way
out on Long Island just to purchase
grandpa Berg's peaches. My
mother, Alice L. ( Berg) Ludwig,
would drive me and my sister to
grandpa's so we could help place
the peaches in baskets for sale.
What a fun time it was for us and
such a wonderful memory to savor.
My mother taught in East
Meadow, in a one room school
house, all grades. I often wondered
how she managed such a task. She
always spoke well of her teaching.
Guess it was because she loved
children so much! Having five of her
own was proof of this love!
Thanks again for the Newsletter!

and changes, this is a bit of nostalgic

truth I can thrive on for the moment.
My dearest husband, Edward
Schaaf, always said " You can't go
back." " Going back" brings a bit of
sadness, but i try to remember the
wonderful people and times in our
lives that we were blessed with.
P. S. My grandfather's farm was
located where the Meadowbrook
Parkway is today. I neglected to
mention that just east of his home
was a hill that was always covered
with beautiful blue/ purple violets.
Cars would fill the roadside so
people could pick those lovely
flowers. It was a wondrous mass of
color!"
Mildred Gifford Jaisle writes, that
she received a copy of the CPHS
Newsletter from Hilda Carman. She
made reference to the kindergarten
picture of the class of 1931, Miss
Woodruff, a picture that was in the
May Newsletter. She identified
some of the children. In the middle
row 3rd from left could be Rose
Greco; 4th from left Joan McGinty,
6th from left could be Charlotte
Damm and 7th and 8th are the
Spagnali twins ( Evelyn and Teresa).
In the front row Altmann is spelled
with 2n's, middle boy could be
William Sloan. Next to Anthony
Vitale and 5th could be William
Hansult.
We thank you all for your time to
fill us in on a bit of very special times
and memories you have on growing
up in Central Park/ Bethpage!
A Special " Thank You" - The
Central Park Historical Society would
like to thank Richard and Mark Kalen
for donating models of the Grumman
FF1, F3, F4 Wildcat, G21 Goose,
and the F6F Hellcat. All to be put on
display, in the future, at the
Bethpage Library. These models are
given in honor of our member,
Ernest Finamore.
Benkert Cider Mill - The
Benkert Cider mill was located on
the east side of Stewart Avenue
south of the rail road tracks. We are
asking you for your recollections of
this, one time, a landmark in Central
Park/ Bethpage. We have records of
it being in operation in 1888 and
knowledge of it still in operation in
the 1940' s. What do you remember?
We would like to hear from you via e-mail
or to our P. O. Box.
Remember When - This is a
special " I Remember When" by
Margaret Cava Carvo and Albert
Procida written in the late 1980' s. If
you close your eyes you can hear
them telling their story.
A slow stroll through Bethpage
village in the crisp, early, morning air
before the intrusion of the sounds
and smells of commercial traffic,
reawakens the visual imagery of
what was aptly named Central Park.
Memory is the magic wand which
temporarily whisks away the bleak,
black topped parking areas replacing
them with wild daisies, tall weeds
and even taller, elderly maples which
provided a backdrop for the row of
stores southwest of the rail road
tracks. The aroma of fresh crushed
apples accompanies this flashback
to the mid- twenties and is a reminder
of the Benkert Cider Mill which was
also leveled by the wall to wall black
top.
Questions jog the memory about
this part of Bethpage history. What
was the nature of the people who
opened businesses at the end of
the era of prosperity which
preceded the financial crash of
1928? How did they survive this
crisis which wreaked havoc on the
inhabitants of this small, park- like
community? How did they turn these
stores into lifelong vocations?
Albert Procida and I are children
of two of the families who founded
one of the earliest shopping centers
in Bethpage. We say families
because the owners lived with their
families in apartments over the store.
In those days these structures were
considered to be only temporary in
nature. It was said they were
constructed by a real estate
entrepreneur, Max Silverman, who
only intended to rent them. People
said they wouldn't last longer than
ten years. But today more than 60
days later, they still stand in spite of
calamitous fires...
In fact, the Sanitary Barber Shop
operated by Albert and Gaspar
Procida still services a Bethpage
clientele many of who are related to
families who recall Central Park. Two
doors down, the Cava Pharmacy
which was owned by my father,
Carmine Cava, and later by my
husband Joseph Carvo is a memory
shared by a small circle of early
residents. It was my world from the
time I was six years old until I
attended college. I recall Albert and
his family from the day they were
born. They were an integral part of
the family business. It was a sight to
behold to watch Albert and Gaspar
being trained to be barbers by their
dear father, Frank.
We are glad to have these stories
which document a time in our
history. We continue to collect such
stories for our Encyclopedia of
Central Park/ Bethpage which is on
the internet at the Bethpage Library
web site. We ask you for your
remembrance to add to our
Encyclopedia and to share with our
membership.
Condolences - The Central
Park Historical Society extends its
sympathy to the family and friends of
Roberta ( Bobbie) Donlon. Bobbie,
devoted wife, mother of 7 children,
grandma to 10 children, two great
grandchildren, sister, sister- in- law,
and friend to many. Bobbie always
encouraged and supported her
family in all their endeavors. This was
evident by the role she assumed by
being very active in the Ladies
Auxiliary of the Bethpage Fire
Department for 53 years, where she
assumed the responsibility of being
a leader and president. Bobbie will
be missed by all who knew her.

of Art as they announce plans for the Sprint are ( L to R) Jean
Henning, Director of Education of the Museum, Run Co-
Directors Lynn Kotler and Bob Mittleman, and Giilis Pohl,

are cordially invited to join in on
Monday evening, August 15 for the
2nd annual Sprint for the Arts 5
Kilometer Run on the grounds of
the Nassau County Museum of Art in
Roslyn.
Participants will spend a very
pleasant summer evening running 5
kilometers on the Museum grounds
- arguably the most beautiful setting
for a race in Nassau County - at the
same time as you are helping
promote and foster culture and the
arts in general and local museums in
particular.
The prime beneficiary of this
year's Sprint for the Arts is the
Nassau County Museum of Art itself.
The Museum combines the dynamic
imagery of a museum setting with an
historic mansion and the natural
beauty of incredible gardens. It
provides the Long Island community
and beyond with four important
exhibitions per year of the works of
internationally acclaimed artists.
Programming at the Museum
includes fostering exhibitions of
local artists, art education for all
ages, and cultural activities including
lectures, trips and various other
events to make the enjoyment of art
available to all. Funds raised from the
2005 Sprint for the Arts will go
directly to help the Nassau County
Museum of Art achieve its mission!
Co- Race Directors Lynn Kotler
and Bob Mittleman of the host
Greater Long Island Running Club
are planning a very pleasant
evening, with a very pretty course
that shows off the Museum of Art at
its best, excellent post- Run
refreshments, a great raffle, and
awards in 5 year age groups and to
Clydesdales and walkers.
Our sincere appreciation to our
Sprint sponsors, led by two
outstanding North Shore
restaurants - Bryant & Cooper Steak
House and Cipollini trattoria & bar.

Shop, Snyder's of Hanover and

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
( Never known to fail)
Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt.
Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of
heaven, blessed mother of the Son
of God, immaculate virgin, assist me
in my necessity. Oh star of the sea,
help me & show me herein, you are
my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of
God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I
humbly beseech you from the
bottom of my heart to succor me in
this necessity. There are none who
can withstand your power. Oh show
me herein you are my mother. Oh
Mary conceived without sin pray for
us who have recourse to thee. ( 3
times). Oh Holy Mary I place this
cause in your hands. ( 3 times). Holy
Spirit, you who solve all problems,
light all roads so that I can obtain my
goals. You gave me the divine gift to
forgive and forget all evil against me,
and that in all instances of my life,
you are with me. I want in this short
prayer to thank you for all things as
you confirm once again that I never
want to be separated from you in
eternal glory. Thank you for your
mercy toward me and mine. The
person must say this prayer 3
consecutive days, the request will
be granted. This prayer must be
published after the favor has been
granted. D. H.
