Seniors Shine at Olympic Night Bethpage Baseball Association
Annual Picnic
The Super Hero Seniors, who took 1 place.
The evening was packed full
of fun, friendly competition and
high spirits -- even the crowd
who came out to cheer for their
favorite team had a grand time
during the annual Olympic Night
at Bethpage High School. The
" Super Hero Seniors," who took
the first place award earned the
most points in the series of
games and events that took
place the entire week, ending on
Olympic Night. Freshman came
in second place at the
competition and Juniors took
third.
More than three hundred
students on four teams
representing all four grade
levels, nine through 12,
competed in Olympic Night, an
evening that consisted of a
friendly battle between the
classes who participate in a
variety of games earning them
points for each event. The
teams, " Fighting Freshmen,"
" Sophomore Smurfs," " Return of
the Juniors," and " Super Hero
Seniors" were judged on the
events that included games such
as " Over/ Under," " Tug of War,"
" Survivor," " Apache Race," " Pass
the Orange," " Scooter Races"
and " Obstacle Course."
Additional points were earned for
the best class cheer and
banners, and for the penny war
event. Even the " Pencil Neck
Geeks," some of the faculty
members at Etethpage High
School joined in the festivities
and danced into the gym

Fourth Week of
' Music Under The Stars9
Concerts Gets Underway July 25
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John
Venditto announces that the fourth
week of the Town of Oyster Bay
" Music Under the Stars" concert
Series will bring more amazing acts
to local Town venues. According to
the Supervisor, residents can look
forward to a tribute to Frank Sinatra,
Lee Greenwood and Crystal Gayle,
Little Richard, and more during the
the week of Monday, July 25.
Kicking off the week will be " Old
Brown Eyes Sings Old Blue Eyes,"
a Frank Sinatra Tribute, starring
Jerry Cardone with the Danny
Vincent Orchestra. The performance
will be held at Ellsworth W.
Allen Town Park, Heisser Lane,
Farmingdale.
" Jerry Cardone's love of Sinatra's
music and phraseology is evident in
his unsurpassed delivery of this
beautiful music," Supervisor
Venditto said. " He celebrates the
work and life of a man who has
captivated us for decades like no
other singer."
On Tuesday, July 26, John J.
Burns Town Park, Merrick Road,
Massapequa, will resound with The
Charlie Daniels Band and The
Thunder Road Band.
" It hasn't been so much a style of
music, but more the values consistently
reflected in several styles that
has connected Charlie Daniels with
millions of fans," the Supervisor
stated. " The Thunder Road Band
features Pat Horgan and Peter
Dama, who started writing songs in
their Bronx grammar school and
have been playing together for over
30 years."
Wednesday, July 27, brings Lee
Greenwood and Crystal Gayle to
Syosset- Woodbury Community
Park, Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury.
" Lee Greenwood is often identified
as the ultimate name that
comes to mind when patriotism is
mentioned in the entertainment
industry," Supervisor Venditto said.
" And Crystal Gayle, with almost
three dozen hit records to her credit,
was the first female country artist
to achieve platinum sales status.
She has a shelf full of awards to go
along with her extraordinary run of
hit singles and albums."
Sound on Sound Music will provide
" Music for All Ages" at H. B.
Mattlin Middle School, Washington
Avenue in Plainview, on Thursday,
July 28.
" This band began in a recording
studio creating original tunes in the
70s and continues to produce oriai-nal
music to this day," Supervisor
Venditto said. " This band is so
adept at dance music of all eras,
having performed for thousands of
wedding receptions and private
functions. The band performs 50s
revivals, theme shows and
Broadway revues, as well as music
of the 40s, 50s, 60s and Motown.
Friday, July 29, will bring the Billy
Joel Tribute Band Big Shot to the
field at Hicksville High School,
Newbridge Road in Hicksville.
" Big Shot is the premier Billy Joel
tribute act based in Long Island.
Fronted by renowned
vocalist/ pianist Michael Delguidice,
the band creates a sound and
stage presence as excitingly close
to an actual Billy Joel performance
as you will ever experience," the
Supervisor stated.
Rounding out the week on
Saturday, July 30, will be Little
Richard and The Encounters, who
will perform at John J. Burns Town
Park, Merrick Road, Massapequa.
" One of the original rock and roll
greats, Little Richard needs little
introduction," Supervisor Venditto
said. " You know him for classics like
Tutti- Fruitti' and ' Long Tall Sally,'
which he always performed with an
overjoyed personality in his singing.
After several decades, Little Richard
still remains one of rock and roll's
most colorful icons, still capable of
turning on the charm and charisma
in his appearances in the limelight."
The Supervisor added, " Named
the a cappella group of the year for
2000, The Encounters, featuring
Pete Milazzo, Charlie DiComo, Mike

DeBenedetto, are very much in
demand. The group performs regularly
in the tri- state area and on
both radio and television. If you

music, you will love The
Encounters."
Supervisor Venditto noted that all
performances begin at 8: 00 p. m. In
case of rain, outdoor concerts will
be cancelled.
" I don't know of any music- lover
who won't find at least one of the
performances during the fourth
week of ' Music Under the Stars' to
their liking," Supervisor Venditto
commented. " I know there are a
couple on my don't miss list. So
come and join your neighbors and
friends for a fun night out. Just bring
along a lawn chair or blanket and
get ready for some memorable
entertainment."

BETHPAGE BRAG BOOK
Diane Weiner, of Bethpage has
been recognized for her long- term
dedication to the Long Island Family
& Consumer Science Professionals.
Honored with this year's
Distinguished Service Award, Mrs.
Weiner has labored tirelessly to
make others aware of the special
contributions the Family &
Consumer discipline offers to public
school students.
A graduate of Queens College,
she has earned both a Bachelor's
and Master's Degree in Family and
Consumer Science Education. As
well, she holds a Professional
Degree in School Administration
from C. W. Post College. Likewise, a
valued faculty member of the
Bethpage School District, there is
much more to this teacher than a
mere award announcement could
convey.
Passionate and driven, she
routinely accepts every opportunity
to share her insights for preparing
kids with skills for success as adults.
Her vision of Family & Consumer
Science is rooted in the idea that
these lessons in real life are
absolutely necessary to prepare her
young students for the future. With
this keen perception, it is no wonder
she has been asked to work with
Cablevision's team of education
consultants to establish its Power-
To- Leam ( school to work) website.
With Computer Associates she has
served as a panel member to create
a career exploration format used by
all schools on Long Island. In the
classroom she has served as a
supervising teacher for 3 student
interns.
Almost brushing off the portrayal
of inspiring, herself, her eyes gleam
as she confides, " one of the
reasons I have stayed so committed
is that my colleagues, those around
me, are so motivating to me." 24/ 7,
365 days a year, in their own
individual districts, Family &
Consumer Science educators must
validate their existence each and
every day. Yet, each and every day,
despite this incredible pressure,
they do terrific things in their
classrooms. They have gone so far
[ and above the norm]; I cannot help
but be inspired by them."
An active member of the
association she supports and loves,
Diane Weiner has fulfilled many roles
including President- Elect, Co-
President, Nominations Chair,
Publicity Chair and Liaison.
Elsewhere, she has mentored
young professionals, hosted
meetings and always has time for
new challenges. " Yes, it is true I am
focused," she admits.
" Nevertheless, I am only combining
passion with commitment. It is a
daunting task to create awareness
and one that is done without much
fanfare or recognition. Yet, I will
continue to proudly portray what I
believe is categorically essential in
the classroom." Clearly, this zeal and
fervor explain why Long Island
Family & Consumer Science
Professionals appropriately
recognized her lifetime of loyalty and
perseverance.
Special anniversary wishes of love are sent to Josie and
Tony Romano who celebrated 50 years of marriage on June 5,
2005. A fabulous party was held at Singleton's in Bethpage,
where family and friends gathered to wish the happy couple
fifty more.
Long Island residents attending
the University of Buffalo have been
named to the dean's list for Spring
2005 for achieving a grade- point
average of 3.6 or higher.
The University of Buffalo is a
premier research- intensive public
university, the largest and most
comprehensive campus in the State
University of New York system. UB's
more than 27,000 students pursue
their academic interests through
more than 300 undergraduate,
graduate and professional degree
programs. The university offers the
only degrees in law, pharmacy and
architecture in the SUNY system,
and is the home of the only
comprehensive public school of
engineering and the only school of
informatics in New York State.
Among the students honored
are Joseph Bestreich of Bethpage;
Michelle Cavataio of Levittown;
Sheri Katz and Lauren Krasnoff of
Old Bethpage; Lori Baumgarten,
Jennifer Betancourt, Shirah
Cashriel, Cara Frey, Tamara Heifer, "
Jennifer Hinchy, Valerie Marangio,
Shaked Terner, Nina Schlissel, Fara
Ditkowsky, Elizabeth Wong and
Joshua Alexander of Plainview.

Beautifying Downtown Bethpage
Thank you Terri Brace and Kathy Frost for helping weed and clean up the
flower containers along Broadway. Our mere presence prompted other
people to volunteer so I think we will be able to put together a Committee for
the Beautification of Downtown Bethpage.
In addition to attracting more volunteers, we met some of the generous,
giving folks who have been caring for several of the planters on their own.
Three cheers for Yolanda Lange, Alma Feury and the others who have been
watering, nurturing and weeding a couple of the planters for several years. A
big thank you to Frank Camerlengo at Emil's Nursery. His generosity for the
plantings and many other community activities knows no bounds.
The committee will be back at work. Anyone interested in volunteering,
please contact me at 516- 624- 6307. To quote my mother, " many hands
make life's work easy." Let's hope we get lots of volunteers because a more
beautiful Bethpage benefits us all."
With apologies to Carole Catapano and Teri Black - 1 did not know that they
were still responsible for the beautiful flowers in the triangle at the
intersection of Broadway and Cherry Avenue. Thank you for the beautiful
display that welcomes people to Bethpage. We hope to replicate that display
in the downtown area.
Update from Town Hall
I have met with a cross- section of the community to discuss people's
concerns about the proposed skating rinks. The groups viewed draft copies
of the plans from which they were able to make comments on behalf of
Bethpage. The groups represented folks involved in ice hockey, athletics,
school sports, civic associations, real estate issues and a general concern for
the betterment of Bethpage.
The ideas proposed at these meetings have been presented to the
architect, consulting engineers and the Town of Oyster Bay's engineering
staff. They are working to incorporate the suggestions from the community. -
When the plans are ready, they will be available for the community to review.
No secrets here. All we want is what's best for Bethpage!

Sure signs of summer: the
weather is getting warmer, days are
getting longer, school's ending and
teens are turning their attention to
the prom. One of the annual rites of
prom season has been a trip to the
tanning salon to get a " healthy
glow." But tanning - at a salon or on
the beach - isn't healthy. In fact, it
can be deadly. Parents have an
important role in keeping their
children healthy and sun smart. In
fact, legislation in Nassau County
and pending legislation in Suffolk
will require parental permission
before allowing teens into a tanning
booth. Getting a tan or a burn isn't
kid stuff - it's serious business.
A tan is the skin's response to an
injury. Every time the skin tans,
damage accumulates on the skin,
accelerating the aging process and
increasing risk for skin cancer.
Indoor tanning is even more
dangerous because tanning beds
use Ultraviolet A ( UVA) radiation.
Studies have proven that Ultraviolet
A ( UVA) and Ultraviolet B ( UVB) rays
cause cancer. The lights in a tanning
booth also act as a radiation
multiplier, increasing a user's chance
of developing skin cancer. Rarely
does a user use sunscreen in a
booth.
Teens may think skin cancer is a
disease of older people, but it's not.
Not only is it the number one
diagnosed form of cancer - with
more than one million cases
detected annually - but melanoma,
the deadliest form of skin cancer, is
the most common form of cancer in
people ages 25 to 29. For an 18
year- old heading out to the prom, 25
is not that far off.
More than 1.3 million cases of
basal and squamous cell skin cancer
will be reported this year, along with
59,580 cases of melanoma. More
than 10,000 Americans will die this
year from skin cancer.
No matter how dark or light your
skin, whether you tan or burn, your
skin needs protection from the sun.
Individuals with a fair complexion,
red or blonde hair, many moles or a
family history of skin cancer are at a
higher risk for developing skin
cancer. But anyone can get it -
including reggae legend, Bob
Marley, who died of melanoma.
Skin cancer is preventable. The
best way to protect yourself and
your children from skin cancer is to
limit unprotected exposure to the
sun, especially during the peak
hours of 10 and 4 - even on overcast
days. Remember the American
Cancer Society guidelines to Slip...
Slop... Slap... Warp. Slip on a long
sleeved shirt, Slop on some
sunscreen with a sun protection
factor ( SPF) of 15 or higher, Slap on
a wide- brimmed hat, and Wrap on
sunglasses to protect yourself from
the sun's harmful rays. Apply the
sunscreen liberally before going into
the sun, and reapply after swimming,
sweating or as necessary
throughout the day. And do not use
indoor tanning beds.
May is National Skin Cancer
Awareness Month. For more
information on skin cancer, tanning
beds or general cancer information
contact the American Cancer
Society at 800. ACS. 2345 or
www. cancer. org.

Pope John XXIII Fourth Degree Assembly, the local patriotic

patriotism by flying the American flag in front of his home every
day. This grand old American patriotic tradition seldom gets the
recognition that it deserves. The assembly thanks those who
fly the flag on a regular basis in accordance with the rules of
flag etiquette. Pictured left to right are District Deputy David
