Oyster Bay Town Housing
Authority Provides Emergency
Cell Phones to Seniors
In an effort to further ensure the safety and well being of senior citizen
residents, the Town of Oyster Bay Housing Authority is working together
with Phones For Life, Inc., to collect cell phones to be reprogrammed for
911 emergency use. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto made the
announcement recently when Phones For Life donated to the Housing
Authority approximately 200 phones, which will be dispersed to residents living
in one of the 10 senior housing facilities under the auspices of the Town
of Oyster Bay Housing Authority.
" Since August 2004, the Housing Authority has been collecting used cell
phones, with or without chargers and/ or adapters, at various locations
throughout the Town of Oyster Bay," Supervisor Venditto said. " This ongoing
program will help many of the Town's seniors, starting with residents of our
senior housing complexes."
The cell phones will be distributed, free of charge, to senior citizens residing
in the Authority's senior housing units. As this program is an ongoing
effort, the Housing Authority hopes to continue collecting phones to be distributed
to eligible seniors. The phones will be reprogrammed by Phones For
Life to be used solely for 911 emergency purposes.
" Eligible seniors will not have to worry about the cost of the cell phone, as
well as any monthly fees usually associated with the phones," Supervisor
Venditto said. " I ask residents who have cellular phones that they are no
longer using to drop them off at one of our numerous collection sites."
Phones are being collected at all Town of Oyster Bay Housing Authority
complexes in community centers, including the following: 7 Burkhardt
Avenue in Bethpage; 50 Hicksville Road in Plainedge; 530 Clocks Blvd in
Massapequa; 40 Eastwoods Road in Syosset; 80 Barnum Avenue in
Plainview and 108 Round Swamp Road in Old Bethpage. Other collection
sites include North Fork Bank's Hicksville ( Route 107) and Plainview ( Old
Country Road) branches; Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church
( Carmans Road) in Massapequa; AT& T Wireless ( 1000 Sunrise Highway) in
Massapequa; and the Knights of Columbus in Hicksville ( 45 Heitz Place)
and Plainview ( 500 South Oyster Bay Road). A full list of collection sites is
available on the Town of Oyster Bay's Web site, www. oysterbaytown. com.
The Supervisor credited members of the New York State Senate for their
assistance in the effort, noting that some legislators helped secure a grant
for Phones for Life to be able to work with the Housing Authority.
" This is an excellent example of government working together for the betterment
of the community," Supervisor Venditto said. " Our seniors are precious
to us here in the Town of Oyster Bay, and ensuring a better quality of
life for them is one of our main goals. Thanks to the cooperation of Phones
for Life, we will be able to give them an added feeling of safety."

Throughout the years praise and
championship titles have been
bestowed upon Bethpage High
School for their fine athletic teams
and their hard play on the field.
Recently, the student athletes have
been recognized for their work off
the field, in the classroom, as well as
their contributions on the field. This
fall seven of the eight varsity sport
teams were awarded the New York
State Scholar Athlete Team award
for academic excellence by the New
York Public High School Athletic
Association.
" We are very proud of the
performance of our student
athletes, both on and off the field,"
stated Bethpage Athletic Director
John Franchi. " The students work
very hard to achieve the best
possible results and have emerged
as leaders on the playing field and in
the classroom."
In order to be named a NYS
Scholar Athlete team, teams must
have a composite average of 90 or
above. The number of players who
are individual scholar athletes with a
90 or better average varies from
team to team.
" At Bethpage we are extremely
proud of all of our students," added
High School Principal John
DeTommaso. " We take great pride in
students who excel in a variety of
activities, academics, music,
athletics, drama, etc. The Scholar
Athletes should be recognized for
their outstanding contribution to
Bethpage High School's academics
and athletics."
" We understand the importance
of maintaining our grades in order to
continue to play our sport," stated
Girls Varsity Soccer Captain Kyle
Jansky. " We work very hard and it's
nice to be recognized."
Congratulations to the Girls
Varsity Swimming, Tennis,
Volleyball, and Soccer, and Boys
Varsity Soccer, Cross Country, and
Football for this outstanding
accomplishment.

roster of afternoon programs on a

and everyone is welcome to attend.
Save Thursday, January 20 at
2: 00 P. M. for a slide/ lecture program
entitled " A Portrait of George Sand"
as part of the on- going PORTRAITS
biographical series. George Sand
was the pen name of Aurore Dupin,
one of the most widely read and
influential writers of the 19th
Century. She was chiefly
remembered for her non- traditional
lifestyle and love affairs with Frederic
Chopin and the poet Alfred de
Musset. 2004 was the bicentenary
of her birth and the occasion for
many conferences, exhibitions and
publications celebrating her long
and illustrious career. This is a
fascinating look at the life and times
of a major French novelist,
playwright, journalist and personality
of her day.
On Thursday, January 27 at 2: 00
P. M. Art Historian Donald Dwyer will
be at the library with a slide/ lecture
entitled " They Lived Fast and Died
Young - Some Early 20th Century
Masters." This session will examine
the artistic output of some major
early 20th Century painters, who
produced disturbing, original work in
their brief lives. All were influenced
by primitive art, by cubism with its
emphasis on geometry and
abstraction and by the devastation
of World War I. Included will be
Modiglianai, August Macke, Franz
Marc, Umberto Boccioni and Egon
Schiele. A fascinating look at art
history.
Upcoming Sunday Entertainment

Because of America's military and

Councilman Macagnone Seeks To
Assist Tsunami Disaster Victims
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone, in an effort to
assist the victims of the recent tsunami disaster, is working closely with a .
local Thai temple to accept donations. Monies raised in the effort will, in
turn, be directly given to the Thai Red Cross and put to immediate use in
priority areas.
Councilman Macagnone, who has long been friends with Pisnu
Chanvitan, the Consulate General of Thailand, said his friend told him of
incomprehensible devastation to his homeland. " I knew immediately that I
wanted to be directly involved in something that would help," Councilman
Macagnone said. " Over the years, through my relationship with Mr.
Chanvitan, I've developed an outstanding rapport with the members of
Vajiradhammapadip Temple in Centereach, who agreed to accept the donations
on behalf of the victims."
Councilman Macagnone said the members of this temple have a longstanding
history of working toward the betterment of the local community
" This effort is just another example of their outstanding work," the
Councilman said.
Checks can be sent to Vajiradhammapadip Temple, 110 Rustic Road,
Centereach, New York 11720. Residents can also contact the temple's managing
director, Mandy Payackapan, at ( 631) 471- 8006 for more information.
" You want to make sure that you're giving directly to a reputable agency
that will handle the money in the most productive way and not be diverted,"
Councilman Macagnone. " This local temple will hand the money directly to
the Thai Red Cross, which is operating right on the scene of the tragedy."
Councilman said this local relief effort gives residents an opportunity to
really make a positive difference.
" I ask every Town resident to contribute as they are able to do so,"
Councilman Macagnone said. " This act of generosity will help the millions
left, injured, hungry, sick or homeless."

Blood Drive at
New Island Hospital
New Island Hospital is holding a
blood drive on Friday, January 21,
2005 from 8 am to 6 pm. Long Island
is in critical need of blood. Blood
supplies are at an all time low. We are
asking all members of our
community to please donate. New
and sterile equipment is used on
every person donating blood and
disposed of afterwards.
If you have been turned away in
the past please try to donate again. If
in doubt about your ability to donate,
call Long Island Blood Services at
( 516) 478- 5000 and they will answer
all of your questions.
Blood donated is used to treat
victims, cancer patients, surgical
cases and people with various other
disorders. Volunteer donors are the
only source of this precious gift of
life.
Donating blood takes less than
one hour, and literally can be the
difference between life and death
for thousands of men, women and
children daily. Please take the time
to give blood... help save lives!
For information about our area's
critical blood shortage, answers to
frequently asked questions, visit
www. nybloodcenter. org. For
information about New Island
Hospital or the blood drive on Friday,
January 21, 2005 please call

" L. I. Auto Endurance Tests"
FBHS Topic
Turn back the calendar just over a
century and enter a virtually traffic-free
Long Island! Historian Roy
Douglas will do so for his listeners as
he presents a program on the Long
Island auto endurance trials of 1901-
1902 at a meeting of the
Farmingdale- Bethpage Historical .
Society on Sunday, January 23, at 2
pm at the Farmingdale Public
Library, 116 Merritts Road.
The tests were held by auto
manufacturers and auto clubs to
persuade the public that the early
cars were dependable and sturdy .
enough to complete a 100 mile
course through Queens and
Nassau, including Farmingdale. The
tests led to the first of the Vanderbilt
Cup races in 1904, and to the later
construction of the Vanderbilt Motor
Parkway.
FBHS President Lawrence
Jorgensen invites all interested area
residents to attend the
presentation, adding the reminder
that all such sessions of the FBHS
winter lecture series are free.
Questions on the program may
be directed to the FBHS at 516- 249-

The IRS 501 ( c) ( 3) number is: 04- 3323789.

$ 100,000 for Little Flower Children
Services of New York, an organization

homes for children on Long Island
and in New York City.
In presenting Little Flower
Children's Services with a check
from the recent fundraiser, Brian C.

officer of the Long Island- based grocery
chain, stated, " My father and
mother would be proud of the 22-
year history of this successful event.
The annual golf outing was inaugurated

with families. As a family- operated
business, we at King Kullen
understand the importance of family
ties, and are committed to helping
Little Flower Children's Services
serve underprivileged families in our

Since the first golf outing was held
in 1983, King Kullen has raised millions
of dollars for Little Flower. In
addition, the Cullen family has
played an integral role in the construction
of the eight cottages that
provide a residential setting for more
than 100 children and teenagers at
Little Flower's Wading River, New

said Herbert W. Stupp, the executive
vice president of Little Flower

sponsorship of the annual golf outing,
as well as the many other ways
they have supported Little Flower."
