Carbonara will be at the Bethpage

The Consequences of the
Presidential Election Seminar
Now that the election is over,
what path will the President take,
and how will it impact families, our
future generations and us? Popular
speaker Howard Shurdut will attempt
to answer these questions, and
pose several thoughtful questions
of his own at the Bethpage Library
on Wednesday, January 19 at 7: 30
P. M.
Because of America's military and
economic power, decisions made by
our government will impact the
citizens of the world; conversely,
decisions made by other nations, or
groups of like- minded people will
impact millions of Americans. If we
can do nothing else, we can
certainly be well informed about
these issues.
Come and be a part of this sure-to-
be lively discussion and debate.
Let your ideas and opinions become
a part of the record - audience
participation is encouraged!

New Laws Take Effect January 1, 2005 80- Foot Utility Poles Removed
The new year brings new rules.
Highlights include a reduction in the
state's personal income tax rate and
a reduction in energy taxes, along
with new laws relating to childhood
immunizations and skateboard safety.
Some good news:
• On January 1, 2005, the minimum
wage in New York State will be
increased to $ 6.00 per hour from the
existing $ 5.15 level. The law establishes
a state minimum wage of
$ 6.00 per hour on January 1, 2005,
$ 6.75 per hour on January 1, 2006,
and $ 7.15 per hour on January 1,
2007
• The personal income tax will be
reduced from 7.375 percent to 7.25
percent, saving taxpayers more than
$ 200 million and elimination of the
commodities tax on electricity and
natural gas will save residential
energy customers $ 33 million.
Attention Parents
Senator Kemp Hannon, Chairman
of the Senate Health Committee,
wants you to know:
• A new law adds pertussis
( whooping cough) and tetanus to the
list of childhood immunizations
required prior to attending school for
children born on or after January 1,
2005;
• A law was passed that requires
that children born between 1994 and
1997 be immunized against chicken-pox
( varicella) by the date of such
children's entry into 6th grade; and
• People that ride skate boards
must wear safety helmets in a similar
manner as those that ride bicycles
and in- line skates, including the
mandatory use of helmets by operators
under 14 years old.
Also effective in 2005 is historic
assisted living reform legislation
which will provide New York seniors
with greater protections and
improved long- term care options.

legislation, as well as information on
additional statutes taking effect in
New York State in 2005 log onto

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto ( right) and other
local officials recently met with Richard Kessel of LIPA at the
Bethpage Rail Road Station to supervise the removal of 80- foot
utility poles. When originally installed to transport electric
current, the poles cause a controversy in the community as
they hovered high over the community, near the downtown
business district. In a collaborative effort, Supervisor Venditto,
Legislator Ed Mangano and Senator Carl Marcellino reached
out to LIPA Chairman Richard Kessel and a stop work order was
issued. The officials agreed to come up with an alternate, less
intrusive plan. Shown at supervising the removal of the 80- foot
poles are Legislator Mangano, Richard Kessel, Senator
Marcellino and Supervisor Venditto.
Sanitation Collection Modified For
Martin Luther Kingfr. Day
Oyster Bay Town Councilman
Chris Coschignano reminds
residents that the Town sanitation
collection schedule will be modified
for the Monday, January 17,
observance of Martin Luther King,
Jr. Day.
" On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day,
there will be NO sanitation
collection," Councilman
Coschignano stated. " Residents
who normally receive sanitation
collection on Monday will have
pickup on Tuesday, January 18,
while Tuesday customers will
receive sanitation collection on
Wednesday, January 19."
Councilman Coschignano noted
that all Town offices will be closed on
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but all
parks and ice skating rinks will be
open.
Residential Rental
Heating Requirements
With colder temperatures, the
Nassau County Department of
Health reminds all landlords that they
must provide heat to their tenants in
accordance with the Nassau County
Public Health Ordinance. The
ordinance is in effect between
October 1 and May 31 and requires
the following minimum temperatures
be maintained indoors when the
outside temperature drops below
55F:
68F. from 6: 00 a. m. to 10: 00
p. m.
65F. from 10: 00 p. m. to 6: 00
a. m.
If these temperatures are not
maintained, tenants should call the
Health Department weekdays from
9: 00 a. m. to 4: 45 p. m. at 571- 3678.
For evenings, weekends and
holidays, use the after hours
number, 742- 6154.
Residents renting an entire
single family home are not covered
by this ordinance. Residents of coops
or condominium units with a
centralized heating unit should first
call their building manager or
governing board of managers for
assistance before contacting the
Nassau County Department of
Health. Co- op and condominium
residents with individual heating
units are responsible for their own
heat.
The cities and villages of Glen
Cove, Long Beach, Cedarhurst,
Great Neck, Great Neck Plaza,
Lynbrook, Freeport, Rockville
Centre and Hempstead enforce
their own heating ordinances.
Residents of these cities and
villages can call their local Building
Departments for assistance.

Letter To The Editor
Dear Linda,
As Co- Directors of the St. Paul Lutheran Church Youth Group we want to
thank you for freely publishing in your paper our 6th Annual Christmas Toy
Drive for local area hospitals sponsored by Bretton's Deli. This. was our most
successful toy drive yet.
While most news media ( radio, television, and newspapers) limit their free
space, you graciously publish the local area events. This is what separates
your paper from the rest and makes yours the great local hometown paper it
is.
You and your staff also accentuate the positive events that go on in the
community. This is especially important for our youth so they have positive
role models to follow.
Most of our youth are good, decent, hardworking students. For the most
part our news media portrays the small percentage of our young people who
get into trouble.
Maybe the news media could follow your example and start accentuating
the positive events our youth participate in. What an enlightenment that
would be!
Again, thank you for assisting us with our toy drive. May you and your staff
be blessed with a healthy and prosperous New Year.
Co- Directors
Joanne Foley

Dear Neil, Joanne and Susan.
Thank you for the kind words. We appreciate your sentiments more than
we could explain. The youth of our community are good and hardworking and
it is indeed our honor to publish and highlight the best of Bethpage. Thanks
for writing in.

Christmas In Iraq B fBMaagjaBiaBMQiaaa'^^
( The following are excerpts from a Christmas e- mail from Councilwoman
Mary McCaffery's son, Major Michael McCaffery, 1st Infantry Division ( Big Red
1) currently stationed in Tikrit, Iraq.)
... The elections are still on track, and right now, it's a race to see how well
we can prepare the Iraqi security forces for the big event. The Shia and Kurds
are getting organized and will participate. It's the Sunnis who used to be in
power, but are now a minority who are causing most of the disruptions. That's
why most of the attacks lately are in Sunni places like Mosul, Fallujah, Bayji
and no longer in Shiite places like Najaf or Sadr City. The enemy is constantly
morphing to take advantage where they can. They will probably try to build on
their successful attack on us in Mosul to keep up the pressure, but most of
their attacks here still target the Iraqis working in the Interim Government. Still
amazes me that the Iraqis continue to dedicate themselves to building a new
country.
... Last week, the priest who said Mass was a Maronite who is here from
Hah- vahd doing his dissertation on the military Muslim clergy. Great, great
Mass. To me, you know they're good when you... walk out kicking all new
thoughts and ideas around in your head.
Went to Midnight Mass in Saddam's movie theater. Nice service... big
crowd. After Mass, I went to a Lutheran service. It was held at the site of the
ancient ruins of a Christian Church built in the 3rd Century. The service was
by candlelight. We sang and they had a local woman recite the Our Father in
Aramaic.
I support I should temper all this in the spirit of the season. Suffice it to say
that we are all dedicated to the mission over here and, although it doesn't
seem to have the news traction back home, we take pride in the fact that we
are keeping the terrorists away from our families and homes. The soldiers
here do a tremendous job every day, but we all look forward to getting back
home, knowing that your support and love will be there to greet us.
You can be very proud of the work that is going on in trying to change this
place into something decent for families and communities where people can
live in peace. Really brings it all home about religion when you see true evil,
and there is no other word for what they do, every day, up close.
Christmas is a time of hope for a better future through God's real presence
here. There may be darkness, pain and suffering on the road ahead, but
everything will be fine. So have faith that this will work out for the best, and I'll
see you soon. Merry Christmas, God Bless,
Mike

Installs Phone Card Program
Photos and story by past cmdr. Bud Rosch
In a discussion at the VFW
meeting hall the subject was " phone
cards" for our fighting men
overseas. Past Cmdr. Bud Steubing
discussed this with the commander
Frank Grossmann. In a chance
meeting of the Hon. Mary McCaffery
and PPC Bud Steubing she was
asked for any veterans in our zip
code area. She supplied actually
four. One was unable to be reached
in Iraq. The other three Edward
Chester, Adam Drobecker and her
son Major Michael McCaffery who is
presently in Iraq, but was spoken to
and thought phone cards would be
a great idea. PPC bud Steubing now
brought this up at the next meeting
and it was put to a vote by
Commander Grossmann. It was
seconded and unanimously passed.
Our legislator the Hon. Edward
Mangano was now asked to help
and vowed his aid to the program in
any capacity that he can be of
possible help. Below you will see
our VFW officials and men with two
enlisted men Private Edward
Chester and Private Adam
Drobecker with two of their friends
they graduated school with Mr. Kurt
Wall and Matt Sailla.
In the photos shown you will see
left to right PPC Bud Steubing, VFW
member Edward Souza, Pvt.
Edward Chester, Legislator Edward
Mangano, VFW Commander Frank
Grossmann, Mr. Kurt Wall, Pvt. Adam
Drobecker, VFW member Herman
Lordahl, PPC Leonard Epstein, Mr.
Matt Sailla and Quartermaster Vito
DeFanis. Our two enlisted men and
their friends Kurt Wall and Matt Sailla
are recent graduates of High School
and of course great friends.
The second photo we see the
two handsome army Privates
Edward Chester and Adam
Drobecker with our legislator Hon.
Edward Mangano and Commander
Frank Grossmann.
Once again our Order ( VFW)
would like to remind our local people
that it was their generosity in the
month of May ( Memorial Day Month)
that you all stuffed the Poppy
" pishka" cans with your donations to
wear the little Poppy that allows us to
carry on these type of programs.
Now we have another thing
going on at the VFW county level
that you may be able to help with.
We need any cell phone that is non
usable to yourself. Broken ones and
ones that are not broken we can
use. We have a program that we are
trying to get five thousand over to
our fighting men. We already have
gotten one thousand overseas in
their hands. Our VFW meets twice a
month at the Police Boys Club Bldg.
on Stewart Ave. and Central Ave. It
is the second building after the
police booth on Stewart Ave. The
VFW meets every second and
fourth Tuesday of the month at eight
o'clock. We will appreciate any of
these phones you turn in to us.
All of you veterans out there, you
did a great service to your country
and now we need you in our order
as we need the help. Come on you
wiil feel great to belong to our order.
Remember this started right after the
Spanish American war in 1899 and
you will be part of it. Don't give
excuses give your service we need
you.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
( Never known to fail)
Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt.
Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of
heaven, blessed mother of the Son
of God, immaculate virgin, assist me
in my necessity. Oh star of the sea,
help me & show me herein, you are
my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of
God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I
humbly beseech you from the
bottom of my heart to succor me in
this necessity. There are none who
can withstand your power. Oh show
me herein you are my mother. Oh
Mary conceived without sin pray for
us who have recourse to thee. ( 3
times). Oh Holy Mary I place this
cause in your hands. ( 3 times). Holy
Spirit, you who solve all problems,
light all roads so that I can obtain my
goals. You gave me the divine gift to
forgive and forget all evil against me,
and that in all instances of my life,
you are with me. I want in this short
prayer to thank you for all things as
you confirm once again that I never
want to be separated from you in
eternal glory. Thank you for your
mercy toward me and mine. The
person must say this prayer 3
consecutive days, the request will
be granted. This prayer must be
published after the favor has been
granted. M. Mendola
Children's Pageant at
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
Good Shepherd Christmas Pageant 12/ 19/ 04.
With hearts full of happiness and
anticipation the children of Good
Shepherd Lutneran School and
Church celebrated the Christmas
season with a pageant on Sunday,
December 19, 2005. In front of a
church filled with family and friends
the children told the story of
Christmas through song and
pageantry. The Sunday School, Day
School, Junior Bell Choir and
Children's Chorus all participated
under the musical direction of
Teresa Ratkowski. They reminded
us all again of the true meaning of
this blessed season.

Bethpage High School Student Civic Association members
visit students at Charles Campagne Elementary School as part
of the Culture, Art, and Language ( CALM) Program.
Bethpage High School Student
Civic Association members have
recently begun traveling to the three
district elementary school as as part
of the Culture, Art, and Language
( CALM) Program. CALM is an after-school
program funded by a grant
the district received from
Northrop/ Grumman that allows high
school students to visit the
elementary schools to teach third
grade about different cultures, from
places such as Italy, Spain, Africa,
Eastern Europe and the Far East.
The Student Civic Association
members, along with their advisor
and high school Italian teacher
Jackie Jill- Rito, teach the students
words from the different cultures,
taste foods and listen to music from
the culture, and discuss the culture
in small groups.
" The students love it, both high
school and elementary students,"
stated Ms. Jill- Rito. ' The program is
interdisciplinary and brings together
music, art, language, and
geography. The students get an
opportunity to work in a relaxed
environment and learn about their
culture as well as other cultures."
