Freeport marches for peace
FREEPORT SCHOOLS show their commitment
to peace. photo by Mike Singleton
by Mike Singleton
"Today we are here to nourish our
souls," Dr. Kishore Kuncham, superin-tendent
of the Freeport School District,
said in his opening remarks for a Peace
March held on the morning of Saturday,
April 30. Hundreds arrived at Freeport
High School to participate in the second
annual Freeport Cares Community
Peace March. Freeport Cares consists of
group of representatives of various
Freeport organizations including the
schools, the village, clergy, Nassau
County, Freeport police, and elected
officials.
The mission of Freeport Cares is to
integrate all components of our commu-nity
for the purpose of serving the social,
emotional, and educational needs of our
youth. The annual Peace March is a joint
effort of the Freeport Schools and the
Village of Freeport.
Prior to the start of the march, peace
supporters, donning yellow (the color of
peace) gathered to form a human peace
sign. Seen from above and from busy a
Sunrise Highway, the group created
quite a spectacle and drew attention to
this worthy cause. Marchers were then
treated to peace-themed performances
by students from the Leo F. Giblyn ele-mentary
school, the Bayview Avenue
School, and the Caroline G. Atkinson
School.

'A Taste of Freeport'
by Chris McBride
The Freeport Recreation Center gymnasium was bust-ing
at the belt line last Wednesday as the community
poured in to sample and sample - and. sample some more
- the delicacies presented by many of Freeport's top
restaurants for A Taste of Freeport that started six years
ago. Some new restaurants and lots of diehard restaurant
supporters have participated for years.
From falling-off-the-bone ribs, Asian ginger and perfect-ly
prepared bitesize lobster, shrimp, calamari and crab
cakes, pasta, and salmon gravlax were "to die for." Great
classics like sausage and peppers, gourmet brownies were
there. It was a rapture of flavors in decadent dimensions.
Even the drinks and deserts came in a wide array of options
with varying levels of sweetness and sizes abundantly offered
to all.
An enormous thanks is owed to all the businesses - both
exhibitors and many corporate sponsors - that participated in
this great event, which was designed as a fundraiser to sup-port
the spectrum of Freeport Pride's many community pro-grams,
such as chemical dependency and treatment pro-grams
and many youth services for the Freeport community.
The event committee members who worked so hard to
make this happen are Olga Dunning, Elaine Roman, Pauline
Washington, Richard Roman, Marianne Gumbs, Darlene
Holmes, Nadine Coker, James Sweeney and Pat Gordon. It
is co-chaired by Donald Mauersberger and Ramiro Santos.
They also had a lot help from many more, like all the
board of directors and officers of Freeport Pride who were
there. The Leader just can't wait until next year. So we
hope to see you out and about in the restaurant scene this
summer, too!
Freeport Pride Director Ted Levy said - after the
event that "Freeport Pride is very proud, because, 'A
Taste of Freeport' is a way to bring a broad combination
of people, businesses and organizations from different
parts of Freeport, all together." The Baldwin-Freeport
Leader supports Freeport Pride helping communities.
As Ted said in closing, "It is a coming together of peo-ple
from all over." See page seven for more photos.
Restaurant Owner Niel Curtis enthusiastically
shares their Grilled Baby Back Ribs for The Leader
to taste, which was only one among all the many
fabulous delicacies available from 21 restaurants
serving it up that night.
