Nautical Mile Festival
a big success!
FESTIVAL SEAFARE: While Freeport's Nautical
Mile Festival offered many food vendor offerings,
the Greco Family of Bellmore stops by Two Cousins
Fish Market for a lunch-break. Snacking on some
freshly peeled shrimp in homemade cocktail sauce
are from left: Jon Greco with daughter Julia; Mia
Greco, and seemingly unfazed by the excitement,
the Greco twins, Emily and Jake.
RIDES, RIDES, RIDES: Above is the Ferris wheel,
one of many rides set up in the parking lot. In the
middle is a view of Woodcleft Canal from the top
of the Ferris wheel.

Baldwin Council against Drug Abuse will close doors
The Baldwin Council against Drag
Abuse (BCADA) will close its doors on
July 1.
The agency received a letter on June 1
from state Commissioner Arlene
Gonzalez-Sanchez of the state Office of
Alcoholism and Substance Abuse
(OASAS) that BCADA lost its funding
- $228,000 for its drug treatment pro-gram
- because ofstate budget cuts.
This is BCADA's primary source of
funding and it cannot continue to provide
services to the community without this
money.
Below is a response written by BCADA's
Executive Director Claudia Rotundo.
They're Killing Us
by Claudia Rotundo
I understand that New York State is
facing its most difficult fiscal and eco-nomic
challenge in its history.
I understand that in an effort to reduce
State spending, cuts need to be made.
What I don't understand is how, in a
time when prescription drug abuse is on
the rise, in a time when heroin abuse is
on the rise and more and more of our
adolescents are not only becoming
addicted but also dying from heroin
overdose...in a time when DWIs are on
the rise...in a time when so many "new"
drugs and beverages are cropping up and
being marketed to our youth, funding is
cut, no slashed, from drag treatment
facilities such as this one. Does that
make sense?
Can you understand it? Can you tell
me how it's fair, how its right, how it's
justified in a time when the focus is on
more client-centered treatment...to
defund a program which has been the
only one if its kind in this community
since its inception in 1970? Is it client-centered...
or bottom line-centered, they
would have factored in the economic
effects caused when substance abuse is
not treated.
It is an egregious violation of the needs
of this community to close our doors and
shut us down, denying the residents of
Baldwin a place to turn to for help forc-ing
them to travel to other communities
to seek that help. How is it client-cen-tered
to tell a community of clients,
"sorry, you'll have to go elsewhere."
BCADA was born in 1970, the brain-child
of Ellen Silberman, a woman of
great vision, determination and.heart. At
first, it was met with opposition, but her
beliefs and perseverance prevailed.
Counseling services were provided; she
teamed with the Town of Hempstead in
the original Summer Recreation
