76th Year, No. 15 Freeport, N.Y. 11520 The Community Newspaper Thursday, April 14, 2011
Freeport's science stars shine
JUNIORS Stephanie Morales and Maxiel Merced, below, were honored
for their accomplishments. At left, juniors Emerick Martin and Justin
Millan discovered two asteroids.
Nearly 100 hopeful students from the
science research program and other sci-ence
classes stood waiting to explain
their projects to the judges at the Science
Fair held at Freeport High School.
With $75,000 in scholarships and
$5,000 in cash prizes, these students
found that doing what they loved might
also be profitable.
The judges represented local colleges
and universities as well as Long Island
companies such as National Grid,
Northrup Grumman, the Cradle of
Aviation Museum and the Freeport facul-ty.
It is an honor for the district and a tes-tament
to our program to have these dis-tinguished
people take time from their
schedule to participate.
Real dedication to their research was
evident when speaking with the student
presenters. The sophistication of the
projects, their well-planned presenta-tions,
and their enthusiasm for the results
left many amazed that these were "just"
high school students.
Juniors Emerick Martin and Justin
Millan conducted research that was initi-ated
by NASA and were presented
plaques for their confirmed discovery of
two asteroids. They spent two years on
the research and their findings were pre-sented
by Dr. Vincent Pereira, district
coordinator of science, at the National
Science Teacher Association Meeting in
San Francisco.
Emerick was so enthusiastic about his
newly found interest in aeronautics that
he has decided to make it his life's career.
Justin also marveled at the thought that
he might really enjoy studying aeronau-tics.
The two hope to go on to separate
colleges but reunite one day for another
research project next time in space.

Freeport Cares
Peace March April 30
Join your friends and neighbors for
the 2nd annual community Freeport
Cares Peace March on Saturday, April
30, at 8:30 a.m. Participants are asked
to meet at Freeport High School and
wear yellow, a color that represents the
hope for peace.
Last year more than 1,000 marchers
came together to promote community
unity and express the spirit of looking
out for one another. Organizers hope
for even a larger group this year as
word has spread of the community
spirit engendered from last year's
march.
For Freeport Public Schools, encour-aging
participation among the students
and their families has been high on the
priority list. "We want children and
their parents to understand that the
community is there for them," said
Superintendent Dr.-Kishore Kuncham.
After the march, the school district
will be hosting a Health and Wellness
Fair at the high school. Light snacks
will be served.
Freeport. Cares is a collaboration
between the Freeport School District,
the Village of Freeport and communi-ty-
based organizations. The mission of
Freeport Cares is to coordinate pro-grams
and activities that support the
needs of young people and families in
the Freeport community.
