Meet the Fifth Legislative District county candidates
Editor's note: The Fifth Legislative
District encompasses Baldwin, Freeport,
Lakeview, Rockville
Centre, and South
Hempstead. Incumbent
•Joseph Scanell is facing
challenger Christian
Browne.
Joseph Scannell
Joseph Scannell (D-Baldwin)
is serving his
fifth term as Nassau
County Legislator. He is a
lifelong Baldwin resident.
Legislator Scannell is
the chairman of the
Legislature's Public
Safety Committee and
serves as vice-chair of the Towns,
Villages and Cities Committee. He is also
a member of the Government Services
Joseph Scannell
Committee and the Finance Committee.
Some of his accomplishments as legis-lator
include obtaining a
commitment that the
First Precinct will
remain in Baldwin. He
also worked on a pro-gram
to restore and
maintain South Shore
ponds. It includes multi-million
dollar projects at
Milburn Pond, Silver
Lake, Lofts Pond' and
Tanglewood Preserve. In
addition, he has obtained
$750,000 for community
revitalization projects on
Baldwin's Grand
Avenue. He also recently
secured an additional $650,000 to repair
and restore a shopping center on Atlantic
Avenue in Baldwin.

The Challenger: The following is the offi-cial
campaign biography for Christian
Browne. '
Christian Browne
Christian Browne was
born in Freeport in 1976.
In 1978, the Browne
family moved to
Rockville Centre, where
he was raised along with
his three siblings. He
attended local public
schools through the
eighth grade, Regis High
School, the College of
the Holy Cross and
Fordham University
School of Law.
After graduation from college, Chris
served in the administration of New York
City Mayor Rudy Giuliani from 1998-
Christian Browne
2002, ending his tenure as deputy director
of the Office of City Legislative Affairs.
He worked his way through
Fordham Law School at
night and was admitted to
the New York State Bar in
2005. He then he served for
three years as an assistant
district attorney in the
Manhattan district attor-ney's
office. Following his
time at the district attor-ney's
office, Chris joined
the Melville law firm of
Lazer, Aptheker, Rosella &
Yedid, P.C. as a member- of
its litigation group, han-dling
a broad array of legal
matters, including commer-cial
litigation, criminal defense work,
zoning and land use issues, appellate mat-ters
and landlord-tenant litigation.
