Freeport's Nautical Mile now has a
series of trail markers along the
Woodcleft Canal beginning at E.B.
Elliot's and ending at the boardwalk.
The trail markers can be found at 1/8 of
a mile intervals. The halfway point is at
Otto's restaurant.
The project is a collaborative effort
between the Long Island Arts Council at
Freeport, Freeport Public Schools, and
the Village of Freeport. The markers
designate the passing of each 1/8 mile
on the mile-long walk. There will be an
official walk event to celebrate this
installation in the early Spring.
Notification of this event is to come in
the near future.
The markers' layout was designed by
award-winning Freeport-based artist
Marc Josloff. His paintings and photog-raphy
have been exhibited in galleries
throughout the metropolitan New York
area in both public and private collec-tions.
Mr. Josloff ?s paintings have been dis-played
alongside those of Georgia
O'Keefe, Will Barnet, Norman
Rockwell, William Merritt Chase and
other notables. He received the Arts
Education Award from the Long Island
Arts Council at Freeport, was an inter-national
award winner through
PhotoLife magazine, and has represent-ed
the United States in the UNICEF
competition for his painting.
Each marker bears a work of art on
either side by a student in the Freeport
Public School District. One side dis-plays
a Nautical theme and the other
side displays a Peace theme. This proj-ect
served as a way for young people in
the community to exercise their creative
abilities through the public schools.
The Long Island Arts Council at
Freeport is a nonprofit organization cele-brating
36 years of serving the Long
Island arts community and general public.
The Arts Council strives -to improve the
quality of life through the arts by offering
a variety of programs and services.
The Arts Council administers High 5
Long Island - a program providing
teenagers with $5 tickets to cultural
events and special youth programming,
presents concerts and exhibits, is active
in community development, sponsors a
juried photography show, recommends
artists for employment and exhibit
opportunities, coordinates art classes,
and donates musical instruments to
schools in underserved communities.
It also manages an international musi-cal
composition contest, organizes craft
fairs, hosts arts networking opportuni-ties,
coordinates management seminars,
and implements an online Culture
Calendar, listing of opportunities for
artists, and artist directory.
The offices of the Long Island Arts
Council at Freeport are located within

East Merrick Road. You can visit
