77th Year, No. 37 Freeport, N.Y. 11520 The Community Newspaper Thursday, September 13, 2012 750

Thousands of Nassau County residents gathered
on the sands of Point Lookout Beach for a sunrise
9-11 memorial service on Tuesday. This was the
same spot where residents looked to the west in
the wake of the terrorist attacks that fateful day, 11
years ago.
The memorial service, sponsored by the Town of
Hempstead, is Long Island's largest 9-11 ceremony.
After a somber yet uplifting one hour service, resi-dents
were invited to write the names of loved ones
who were killed at the World Trade Center on the
"Heroes of 9-11" panorama. Attendees were also
encouraged to write personal messages on the tags
attached to small Americans flags, handed out at the
ceremony and placed at the base of the Town of
Hempstead's Twin Towers replica. Finally residents
cast white carnations in a reflecting pool under the
World Trade Center beam, a poignant reminder of
what was lost.
Father Douglas R. Arcoleo (bottom left), pastor of
Our Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church and
Rev. Eric Mallette (top left), pastor of the Greater
Second Baptist Church, were speakers. "I am proud
to stand with the families of the victims of 9/11, rev-erend
clergy, firefighters and our patriotic residents
as we continue to forge links in our unbreakable
chain of love, eleven years later," said Hempstead
Town Supervisor Kate Murray.
