Thirty-eight Freeport High School students achieved Class of 2012 graduate status
in late August, the perfect reward for their continued hard work and perseverance. For
the family, friends and administrators in attendance, this was truly a time to applaud
the students' great efforts and show continued support.
"The graduating Class of 2012 established a new record of graduation rate in
Freeport's recent history," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham. He
went on to remind the graduates of the acronym FOCUS (Fearless, Opportunity,
Commitment, Unique and Stillness or Silence), and continued, "Spend some time in
your inner world for moments of stillness and silence every day."
FHS Principal Linda Carter, Board of Education President Debra Mule" and
Summer School Principal Michael Campiglia also congratulated the graduating class
and encouraged them to continue to persevere in their educational journey.
FEMA extends low-cost flood insurance to Nassau homeowners
The Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) has agreed to extend
low-cost preferred-risk flood insurance
to Nassau homeowners indefinitely.
The low-cost flood insurance was
made available to homeowners who
were recently determined to live in
flood hazard areas because of new
maps. These homeowners were allowed
to purchase Preferred Risk Policies
(PRP) - a lower-cost alternative at pre-mium
rates of $200 to $400 a year. The
PRP was set to expire in December.
Flood insurance, required by lenders if
you live in a flood hazard area, can cost
upwards of $2,000 per year without
this program.
"Nassau County homeowners can
breathe a little easier knowing they are
no longer staring down an impending
deadline that could have cost them
thousands of dollars," said U.S.
Senator Charles Schumer. "This deci-sion
will ease the burden on local
homeowners while FEMA develops
new maps, with local data."
FEMA implemented new flood maps
in 2009 throughout Nassau County that
forced thousands of new residents to
purchase flood insurance plans.
Nassau residents and officials, includ-ing
U.S. Senators Schumer and
Kristen Gillibrand and
Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy,
argued that the maps are faulty
because they are based on Suffolk
County data and so do not use the best
available science or the appropriate
base flood elevation data.
Federal legislation was passed in
June requiring a five-year moratorium
on the implementation of new flood
maps on Long Island. The bill, written
by Senator Schumer, requires the col-lection
of new local data in Nassau
County and forces FEMA to establish
new maps with local data.
The legislation requires FEMA to
remake their existing flood maps that
failed to use Nassau-specific data dur-ing
major map changes put in place in
late 2009.
Upon presentation of those maps,
localities on Long Island will then have
an opportunity to challenge any new
maps. The extension of the PRP will
allow homeowners to continue paying
lower rates while new maps are devel-oped.
"This is about basic fairness and
relief while residents await more local
and accurate data. Extending these
reduced rates for property owners in
the flood zone isn't just helpful in a
tough economy - it's simply the right
thing to do," said Congresswoman
McCarthy.

eligibility contact FEMA at

379-9531.
