The Leader's Father of the Year
by Carissa Gagliardi
Freeport's Kevin Halton Sr. is a
man full of important life lessons.
For as long as he has been a father,
he's been instilling values and ethics
in his four children.
His son, Kevin Halton Jr., wrote to
The Leader, "My father is truly and
amazing person who has taught me
what life, love, and family is all
about." Kevin Halton Sr. is The
Leader's Father of the Year.
Resident of Freeport for 32 years,
Kevin Sr. is the general manager of
Two Cousins' Fish Market in
Freeport and loves his job. He enjoys
selling fresh fish, crabs, lobsters, and
other seafood every day.
Kevin Sr. has worked beside his
son, Kevin Jr., for seven years and
describes working together as "not
always easy" but he acknowledges
the great job his son does and is
happy knowing he enjoys it.
Kevin Jr. describes working aside his
father as inspirational, writing, "He
lives his life with a smile on his face at
all times, and his Irish charm puts
everyone around him in a good mood."
When Kevin Sr. isn't working, he
(almost too appropriately) enjoys
fishing. Work takes up a lot of his
time, but Kevin Sr. always makes
sure to "put God first and family sec-ond."
He plans to spend Father's Day
working most of the day and then
going out to dinner with his family—
wife, Tina, and four children,
Christopher, 30, Brian, 27, Kevin,
24, and Maria, 15.
Upon hearing he had earned the
title of Father of Year, Kevin Sr. said
it "feels terrific." When discussing
being a father, he says, "Your job is
never done." No matter where chil-dren
are in their lives, Kevin Sr.
stresses the importance of always
showing them love and support.
"Wherever life leads me, I know
that he will always be a major part of
it," writes Kevin Jr. of his dad. "If I
end up half the father he is someday,
I'll be proud."
Kevin Jr.'s letter also affectionate-ly
reads, "He's taught me life lessons
that I will carry throughout my life
and pass on to my own kids and fam-ily
someday."
Among the many important life
lessons Kevin shares with his chil-dren,
he emphasizes taking responsi-bility
for your actions and that it's
OK to make mistakes if you learn
from them. He encourages his chil-dren
to set goals and achieve them. "I
believe in doing the right thing in
life," he added.
Kevin's wife Tina works for
Freeport Public Schools as a kinder-garten
teaching assistant at
Columbus Avenue and an English as
a second language teacher. Their old-est
son, Christopher, works for die
Village of Freeport. Brian, graduate
of Loyola University in Maryland, is
currently attending Brooklyn College
studying nutrition. Maria attends
Freeport High School.
Kevin Jr., a recent lona College
graduate, surprised his father by
nominating him for Father of the
Year. Kevin Jr. describes himself as
having his "mom's Italian stubborn-ness
and dad's Irish sense of humor."
Kevin Jr. writes, "I think it's a pretty
good mix" and "I take pride in my
family's name."
Growing up in Merrick, Kevin Sr.
mentions how fortunate he was to
have such a great father in his life
who instilled respectable qualities in
him and taught him how to be a good
dad. He reminds us all "There's a lot
of responsibility in being a father, but
it's also a lot of fun."
Congratulations, Kevin! Local
merchants and businesses will award
him many valuable prizes: A $25 gift
certificate from The Schooner; a
$25 gift certificate from the
Imperial Diner; A $25 gift certifi-cate
from Piccolo Ristorante and a
one-year subscription to The
Freeport Baldwin Leader.
