THE PLAYOFFS
By Robert L. Harrison
The Freeport High School Red Devils
and the Baldwin High School Bruins
competed last weekend in the FIRST
Robotics competition at the Hofstra
University Arena.
The name FIRST stands For
Inspiration and Recognition of Science
and Technology. Six weeks ago, both
high schools received a box of materials
for their students to assemble a robot.
This year's competition was called
"Rebound Rumble" and was part defense
and offense with six high school teams
playing at the same time. The Hofstra
arena was packed with cheering fans as
the FIRST games were played out in
three days of competition.
Freeport High School Principal Ernest
J. Kight participated by giving out some
of the awards to the winning high
schools. The Red Devils, advised by
Kevin Harrison, scored better than 14
other teams and the Bruins, assisted by
Barbara Riess and others, fared even bet-ter,
beating 30 teams. Both high school
teams hope to be back next year in the
22nd robotic competition at Hofstra
University.
Freeport schools facing further budget cuts
by Mark Treske
The lingering budget difficulties of
the Freeport schools, and the rejection
by Freeport's teachers of a cost-cutting
agreement, occupied a rather lengthy
meeting of the Freeport school board
last week at Freeport High School.
Superintendent Dr. Kishore
Kuncham reviewed the budget story up
to this point; increases in expenditures
and reduced revenues left the district
$3.2 million above the 2% tax cap
approved by the state legislature last
year. In March the district signed a
memorandum of understanding with
the Freeport Teachers Association that
the FTA would defer step and salary
increases for 2012-13. As explained in
a press release that appeared in The
Leader on March 29, the members of
the FTA voted and rejected the memo-randum
by a 54-46% margin.
Dr. Kuncham explained that the dis-trict
would have no other option but
additional budget cuts. He outlined $2
million in reductions, including:
• $1.6 million from the cutting of 17
teaching positions. As a result of these
cuts, full-day kindergarten would be
reduced to a half-day program and
there would no longer be a K-6 enrich-ment
program. Supplies and equipment
for staff development would also be
curtailed.
• An additional $400,000 in cuts will
be made in such areas as equipment,
clubs, field trips, athletic supplies and
equipment and staff development.
Dr. Kuncham spoke about one piece
of good news: $500-600,000 in aid was
recovered when the legislature and
governor agreed to change most of a
competitive grant into aid. But even
with this additional money, Freeport is
still $600-700,000 over the cap.
The deliberative process will contin-ue
into the next board meeting, April 4
at Atkinson, and the board must
approve a budget by April 17. Trustee
Debra Mule, who presided over the
meeting, said she was "devastated" by
the cuts, "but we have to do this." Dr.
Kuncham was "disappointed" but hope-ful
things would change - "if not now,
in the future." (Continued on page 7)
