Nautical Festival still in June, for now...

The consensus of most officials and
members of the public at last Thursday's
Nautical Mile festival meeting favored
moving the event to the fall, but it
appears that won't happen this year.
Mayor Andrew Hardwick told The
Leader that it would be held in June
until a plan is worked out for shoulder-ing
the financial burden of the event by
the vendors.
The mayor presided over the March 8
meeting at the Recreation Center that was
attended by fewer than 80 people.
Among the speakers was Chamber of
Commerce President Ilona Jagnow who
said that, since it began 25 years ago, the
festival "has been great for our village.
Freeport has become a destination," she
said. "People come to the waterfront in
the summer but when Labor Day hits,
business drops drastically. People forget
about the South Shore."
Ms. Jagnow said that businesses "only
have 12 weeks down there to make a liv-ing"
and that she hoped the festival can
be pushed to September or October to
prolong the season. "Labor Day is not the
end of Freeport," she added.
Ms. Jagnow and other speakers cited
safety concerns with the large influx of
people who attend, including many of
college age and from the city, and called
for making the festival more family ori-ented
and manageable.
Fire Department Executive Director
Raymond Maguire and Fire Chief Mark
Stuparich both commented on the desir-ability
of moving the festival to the fall.
• Mr. Maguire said that the festival has
grown to the point were "more people are
coming down than we could possibly
• imagine." They are not Freeport residents
and are "coming for the wrong reasons"
and do not respect the village, he said.
"As firefighters we can't deliver the
services we need to in an emergency,"
he said. "People in homes may be in
jeopardy."
He added that "the Nautical Mile is a
great place, but we don't want to see it
thrive on the backs of residents. We need
to change the culture and move it more to
a family-oriented festival."
Chief Stuparich noted that, on one
occasion last summer, "It took 40 min-utes
to respond to a call at the end of the
Nautical Mile."
He added that the Fire Department is
known as having one of the fastest
response times in the cpunty - 3 to 4 min-utes
on average - but with the festival
there could be delays of 7 to 10 minutes.
Police Chief Miguel Bermudez also
agreed with changing the festival date
and expressed concern over traffic con-trol
problems and the extra officers need-ed
to patrol the area.
Mayor Hardwick asked for a show of
hands on the number of Woodcleft
Avenue business owners present. About
a dozen were in the audience and most
also favored moving the festival date.
One woman in the audience, a
Jefferson Street resident, was one of a
few speakers who did not favor moving
the even to the fall.
"I think we've got to find a way to
make it work (in June). There are so
many festivals in the fall. What's going to
make people come to Freeport in a cool
October?" she asked. "It's the summer
when we want people to come down to
see our town. We've got to find a better
way to have it in June."
Resident Mark Davella said he favored
moving the festival to Memorial Day
weekend in May to attract people who
may be potential homebuyers, since
many home sales in the village take place
over the summer.
