Atlantic Avenue School Allocates Funds For School Bill
The Atlantic Avenue School is
about to celebrate a great event.
The Atlantic Avenue PTA has
allocated funds for a showcase
for the bell which signalled the
children in the first school in
Lynbrook. According to a
painting we have, this school was
built in 1875 across the street
from the present site on Atlantic
Avenue. The bell was cast in 1877
and was in the cupola of the
school. This display case and the
painting will be placed outside
the office of the Atlantic Avenue
School.
In order to make this an even
more significant and exciting
happening, we are soliciting
memorabilia that any family
might have which could be loaned
us for the occasion as a tem-porary
display. We would also
enjoy hearing from anyone who
could give us personal in-formation
about the second
school in Lynbrook which was
situated next to the present site.
We welcome the involvement of
any of our senior citizens or their
descendants who would like to
participate in planning with the
PTA and the administration a
meaningful ceremony to com-memorate
the past and present
importance of the Atlantic
Avenue School of Lynbrook
District 20. Please contact Mrs.
Betty Levinson, Principal of the
Atlantic Avenue School.

Harry F. McGovern of the
Anciient Order of Hibernians
naturally comes to my mind
when St. Patrick's Day rolls
around. The strange thing is that
Harry does not really personify
the typical Irishman by any
means as he is a soft-spoken and
modest gentleman. I forgot to ask
him about Leprechauns, but for
all that, it is the poetical side of
the Irish he seems to remind one
of.
Harry was born just before the
turn of the century in Harlem
when it was an elite, quiet, tree-lined
district quite unlike it is
today. For one thing, New York
City has just grown and grown
until it rather groans. I am happy
that Harry grew up in a peaceful
time when his extra occupation of
Lamp Lighter was a regular
feature of Consolidated Edison
Co. of his day. Each street lamp
had to be turned on and off
separately and that was quite a
job.
He was born to the late Samuel
and Mary McGovern and was one
of eleven children. He has one
sister, Grace from Shelter Island
and one brother, Elmer from still
alive.
His brother was an early
motion picture director in New
York and produced quite a few
early films before the "talkies"
came into being. Harry was an
ace cameraman and knew silent
film stars like Norma
Talmadge and Marion Davies
etc. He and his brother worked
for many different studios until
the entire industry moved to
Hollywood and family ties kept
him here in New York.
He decided to become an Iron-
Worker following his father's
footsteps and went from a
delivery boy and apprentice to a
Superintendant in a short number
of years. He and his father helped
to erect many of the sky.scrapers
of that^ra and he thought nothing
of casually eating his lunch on a
girder 400 ft. up in the air. He and
his father belonged to one of the
earliest unions in the country
called The Knights of Labor and
his Dad was a charter member
and Harry as well.
His father and mother moved
to Lynbrook in 1940 and he came
here about twenty years ago and
resides with his wife, the former
Flavia Bartalena on Edmund
Street. Although, the McGoverns
had no children of their own all
these years, they raised three
nephews of his wife from early
childhood because of the un-timely
death of their mother.
Harry has always liked
sports and still stays glued to the
sight of a good football or
baseball game like the World
Series. He is a neat 5 ft. 7 inc. and
dapper dresser who attributes his
good health to moderation in
everything. He feels that his
wife's good cooking has also
