Thorp Continues
Fight Against
Jet Noise
Assemblyman John S. Thorp,
Jr. has pledged, if re-elected, to
reintroduce his bill to ban night
flights from airports except in
cases of emergency which would
give residents of the area a relief
from the nightmare of jet noise.
The bill as proposed by
Assemblyman Thorp, would
prohibit takeoffs and landings at
airports throughout Ne\y:J^prk
State between the hours 11
P.M. and 7 A.M. ' •
In announcing his plans.
Assemblyman Thorp said, "In
the past dozen years the in-creased
use of jet aircraft has
created a nightmare for residents
who live close to local airports.
Efforts to remove the noise
problems have been frustrated
by the unwillingness of federal
agencies to act, and local
governments have no power to
act.
"There is broad support in the
19th Assembly District in
restricting flights from Kennedy
Airport at night. I will continue
the fight."
Assemblyman Thorp noted that
bans against night flights have
^effectively cut down noise
'pollution in the cities of London,
England and Washington, D.C.,
at that city's busy National
Airport.
