8-Year Olds Help Retarded Children
Mrs. Holden's second grade class at Marion Street School, Lynbrook, have been
singularly honored by the Association for the Help of Retarded Children. The
Executive Director of the Nassau County Chapter, Ms. Helen Kaplan, and Vice
President, Ms. Dorothy Ganin, personally presented a plaque which was made by
the retarded children especially for Mrs. Holden's class. The class also received a
letter of appreciation and a copy of the Twenty Fifth Anniversary Yearbook for
the Association for the Help of Retarded Children in recognition of their donation
to the Association. Two full pages in the Yearbook are dedicated to the class and
the letters the children wrote to the AHRC are reprinted there.
The Lynbrook class had set up a factory in their classroom this spring which
produced candles on an assembly line. The class concomitantly ran a store in
which they sold their product. At the termination of the project, the children voted
to send the proceeds to the Association for the Help of Retarded Children. We are
very proud of these eight-year-olds, and the guidance they received from their
teacher. Activities such as this create a deep sense of involvement and concern in
young people which is the essence of America.
