Daniel Close Donates Book Gala Block Party Highlight Lynbrook Week
Mr. Daniel F. Close, editor of Stories From the Arusi Hills is shown
with Mrs. Edith Jackson, Director, Lynbrook Library and the
fascinating liook now part of the Library's collection.
Mr. Close served as a teacher with the Peace Corps in Ethopia.-He
was stationed in Bekoji, a village of 2,000 people situated 9,000 feet
high in one of the highland sections of Ethopia for a period of two
years. Students contributed both the stories and the illustrations for
the book, and Mr. Close edited all of the material.
Mr. Close provided the Library with a display of Ethopian crafts
made by the people he lived with and taught. It is now on exhibition in
the Library. Mr. Close is a former Lynbrook resident.
Because of the inclement
weather, Friday nights events of
the week long celebration of
Lynbrook Week were held in the
Auditorium of Our Lady of Peach
School. Entertainment was
(x-ovided by the All American
Banjo and was greatly enjoyed
by all in attendance.
The Right Rev. Monsignor
Ronald McDonald, retired and
Pastor Emeritus and Mrs. Helen
Mott, wife of the late J. Ensor
Mott were honored as residents
of the Year. Msgr. McDonald for
his long and devoted community
service both to his parish and the
Village of Lynbrook in laying out
plans for the Nathan Hale Senior
Citizen's Housing project at
Roxey Place and serving
tirelessly on many other vital
Lynbrook Village Committees
through the years and Mrs. Mott
for being one of the actual Co-
Founders of the Cerebral Palsey
Center in Roosevelt and life-long
community service and
dedication to the cause of
Cerebral Palsey.
Mr. Harry Peters, former Fire
Chief and devoted Fireman until
his retirement and now a resident
of Malverne was named
Honorary Resident of the Year.

were also given out for the Best
Suburbia Wins Award
On Friday, June 28th, Suburbia Federal's Lyribrook office was honored with "The Most Beautiful
Building Award" from the Recreation Commission of Lynbrook. On hand for the festivities were (left to
right): Mr. Andrew P. Kane, Jr., Executive Vice President of the Association; Francis X. Becker,
Mayor of Lynbrook, presenting the plaque to the Honorable Frank J. Becker, Chairman of the Board;
Mrs. Alice Mockler, Manager of the Lynbrook office; and Mr. Robert J. Miller, Senior Vice President of
Suburbia.
In December of 1971 when the ground breaking ceremonies for the two and a quarter million dollar
Suburbia building took place, the Honorable Frank J. Becker promised "Suburbia would work
diligently for the beautification and rehabilitation of Lynbrook's business community."
The award was in recognition of the distinctive structure, completed in 1973, located opposite the
Village Hall, which houses not only the Lynbrook banking office, but also is the data processing center
for all Suburbia offices. ,
Suburbia Federal's main office is in Garden City, with other offices in South Huntmgton, Kmgs Park,
Patchogue and East Rockaway. Another office to serve the West Hempstead area recently opened m
June.

Saturday Night's Block Party
was highlighted by two bands,
one The Long for older residents
and one for the younger folks and
much fun, crowds, rides, free
goodies and plenty of available
food.
National Bank of North
America, Suburbia Federal
Savings and Loan Assoc., Marine
Midland Bank, and Chemical
Bank all gave out many free and
lovely gifts and candy. Mr.
Werner Amelingmeier manned
the Marine Midland Bank table
and had free pens, and lovely
radios etc., Mr. Batry Van
Name, President of the Chamber
of Commerce and Manager of
National Bank was aided by

some pretty young ladies from
the bank and gave out prizes and
goodies galore at the later
drawing.
Mrs. Alice Mockler aided by
some Suburbia Federal at-tractive
personnel gave out pens,
shopping bags, candy, Gift
Certificates, and key chains and
many other lovely things.
Chemical Bank gave out lovely
banks, candy etc.
The Chamber of Commerce
group aided by the Chamber-
Lyns and a representative from
Chase Manhattan gave out
prizes, shopping bags, candy and
seemed to be the most crowded
due to the size of the display
which included things sent over
by many of our Chamber
members. Mr. Ray Campbell
won the $50 U.S. Bond ^lonated by
a Chamber member,'^Chase Man-hattan
and there were many
other winners for the large
amount of prizes. The Junior
