Vol. 13 No. 45 Entered a s S e c o n d - C l a s s Matter
P o s t Office, Lynbrook, N.Y. LY 3-1300 THE FAMILY NEWSPAPER Wodnesday, April 10, 1974 IOC
From Store To
Imposing Edifice
jf
Half a century ago, a small
group of men rented a small
store, in Lynbrook, L.I. in which
to congregate for religious ser-vices.
The small group grew and
grew, and on August 12th 1928, a
building was erected, and called
Cong. Beth David. This structure
was located on Vincent Ave.
between Merrick Road and
$unrise Highway. The most
i^triking feature of this building,
one of the oldest houses of wor-ship
on the Island, are the twin
minarets, as seen in the ac-companying
photo. The interior
contains a large high ceiling
sanctuary, and on the lower level,
a meeting room and kitchen.
As time passed, and the
membership swelled, additions
were necessary. A bevy of
classrooms, where the children
attended religious classes, has
been added to the original
structure. This school is
recognized as one of the most
modern of its kind. The
curriculum has been revised, and
the school has been visited by
many noted educators, who are
anxious to emulate this
progressive system. To stimulate
the interest of the young girls and
boys.
The Sisterhood, an arm of the
congregation, meets monthly,
and contributes in many ways to
upholding the high standards of
this institution.
The Minyon Club, another
important arm, meets on Sunday
Lynbrooks New Police Chief
mornings, and, also, make many
worthwhile contributions to the
Cong, activities, year after year.
In 1966, amid pomp and ce-remony,
a cornerstone was laid
for the latest addition, a large
new sanctuary, AND BANQUET
facilities.
To commemorate the Golden
Jubilee, a series of activities has
been planned:—
On Friday evening, April 26th,
at 8:30 P.M. sisterhood will
sponsor the service and Oneg
Shabbat. They will also display
memorabilia, involving
Sisterhood activities - articles,
photos, etc. All are invited to
attend.
On Saturday morning, April
27th, the Service and Kiddush
which follows, will be devoted to
the Minyon Club.
On Saturday evening, April
27th, at 9 P.M. the Congregation
will sponsor a Gala Banquet, held
in the Grand Ballroom, attended
by many congregation members.
At this function. Mayor Francis
Becker, of Lynbrook, will be the
honored guest. An outstandingly
unique Journal will be
distributed.
For the entire month of April,
two new street signs have been
erected, one at the corner of
Denton Ave. and Merrick Road,
and another at the corner of
Denton Ave. and Sunrise High-way,
re-naming the street BETH
DAVID PLAZA.
Lynbrook has a new official
Police Chief who is popular with
his own men and everyone else he
has come into contact with in the
Village. He was officially sworn
into office at the Village Board
Meeting on Monday, April 1,1974.
Oddly enough, it was 22 years
later to the day when he was first
sworn in as a Lynbrook Police
Officer in April, 1952.
He has lived in Lynbrook as a
small child first coming here
when he was a small baby, many
years ago. His parents still live
here and of course are now long-time
Lynbrook residents. Frank
attend^ all Lynbrook schools
and graduated from Lynbrook
High School.
He has a lovely wife, Ruth, one
son, Frank Kehr, Jr. and one
daughter, Linda, and a small 2
year old granddaughter, little
Cynthia.
After having passed Civil
Service Examinations, he was
