Women^s ORT Kickoff "Host Family"
Volunteers
Needed
Lynbrook area families are
needed to entertain English-speaking
European teachers in
their homes for one or two weeks
this summer, it was announced
today by The American Host
Program.
According to J. Stuart Perkins,
Board Chairman of the Host
Program, who is President of
Volkswagen of America,
American Host is one of the few
non-governmental programs
designed to show the American
way-of-life to foreign teachers by
pairing them with American
families.
Mr. Perkins said that being a
"host family" is open to anyone
who has the desire to increase
understanding and friendship
between Americans and
Europeans. All American Host
requires, he said, is hospitality -
a private room for a guest and
free time for one or two weeks to
introduce the guest to friends,
neighbors and perhaps fellow
teachers.
American Host arranges all
transportation. Host families are
asked to meet their guest upon
arrival in their community.
Teachers and host families have
an opportunity to correspond for
at least a month before meeting.
Arrangements for par-ticipating
as a host family can be
made by writing to: Mr. Tom
Murphy, The American Host
Program, Hotel Commodore,
Suite 2100, New York, New York
10017 or call (212) 683-6567.
Deadline for information: March
15, 1973

Award To Malvernite
Franklin (Frank) Faye,
Lynbrook's Fireman of the Year
is another one of those fabulous
Brooklynites who have been long-time
residents of Lynbrook,
U.S.A. He is of French and
Norwegian descent and comes
from a long line of adventurous
sea captains and interesting
ancestors. He grew up near
Bushwick Hospital in Brooklyn
and was born to the late Franklin
S. and Florence Faye. He has one
sister, Marjorie, now a resident
of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. Frank went
to Public School in Brooklyn and
was too young for World War I
and over-age for World War H.
He has a marvelous record,
however of dedicated public
service through the years.
He went to work for an English
Importing House that had a great
deal of business with China and
was quite used to dealing with
exotic names like Tientsin,
Peking, Shanghai, etc. in the
course of his daily work which he
found truly very interesting. He
worked for this firm from 1917
until 1927 and then quit to go to
work for the Long Island
Railroad Company. He worked
for the Long Island Railroad in
all sort of capacities from con-ductor,
freight handler,
dispatcher and has worked on
both steam engines and deisel
and electric trains. He finally
retired from the Long Island
Railroad after 39 years of service
in June of 1967 having com-menced
working full-time in
May, 1928. I had always felt that
there was something naggingly
familiar about Frank until I
realized that he was our friendly
conductor on the same South
Shore Train I took as a passenger
and commuter for many years
and the one that all the
passengers threw a party for. He
is a true old-time railroad man
and has some mighty interesting
opinions about things in 1973
connected with the railroad.
Oddly enough, the two chief
ambitions in Frank's life were to
become a trainman and to
