Official Candidate
Rockville Centre, N.Y. -- Aug.
22 - Bishop Walter P. Kellenberg
of the Rockville Centre Catholic
Diocese has joined other
concerned citizens around the
country in protesting CBS-TV's
rebroadcasting of two Maude
episodes dealing with abortion.
"By presenting pro-abortion
views in the format of a 'comedy'
show," the Bishop charged, "the
producers of Maude apparently
hope to avoid the requir6mejpts ^
the 'fairness docfi-ine' which
requires stations to present both
sides of controversial issues."
"This blatant attempt to use
the public airways to
propagandize for abortion should
be protested by all citizens," the
Bishop adds.
The full text of Bishop
Kellenberg's statement follows:
"I wish to join with many other
concerned citizens around the
country in expressing outrage at
the attempt of the Columbis
Broadcasting System to promote
abortion through a comedy show.
"The Maude shows clearly
advocate abortion. By presenting
pro-abortion views in the format
of a 'comedy' show, the
producers of Maude apparently
hope to avoid the requirements of
the 'fairness doctrine' which
requires stations to present both
sides of controversial issues. This
blatant attempt to use the public
airwaves to propagandize for
abortion should be protested by
all citizens, and I commend those
who have spoken out and who are
continuing to act in defense of
human life."
