UKEETING A BROTHER: John Sugnie, of Lynrook [third from

TEENAGE HERO: Sixteen-year-old Roy Vaccaro of Baldwin
receives much deserved recognition for "selfless and heroic action"
from Hempstead Town Presiding Supervisor Francis T. Purcell[left]
and Hempstead Town Councilman Leo F. McGinity. Roy was cited for
saving the life of 16-year-old Erin McGarry after the girl fainted and
fell into a backyard swimming pool. Roy dove to the bottom of the
pool, brought Erin to the surface and reveived her with artificial
respiration. "We recently began a campaign to make pec^le aware of
the safe use of home swimming pools in Hempstead Town," noted
Purcell, "but nothing we could ever do would come close to the
example set by this truly heroic young man."
Horseshoe Championship
The Broadway Tavern of Malverne recently held its 1973 Horseshoe

Lynbrook Fire Dept.
Holds Tournament
The Lynbrook Fire Depart-ment
will hold its 5th Old Fashion
Home Tournament on Sunday,
August 5th, at Greis Park. The
park is located on Horton Avenue
between Merrick Road and
Sunrise Highway, Lynbrook and
has ample parking and picnic
facilities. The tournament begins
at 1 p.m. and admission is free.
Refreshments will be sold.
The five Lynbrook Fire com-panies;
Engine Co. //I, Hose Co.
Vulcan Co., Hook & Ladder and
Tally-Ho, will lock horns again
for the championship of the
Department. Among the events
will be; Running Hook & Ladder,
E f f i c i e n c y , E f f i c i e n cy
Replacement and the Bucket
Brigade. Midpoint during the
Tournament the men will take a
rest and the ladies from each
company will run a midified
Bucket Brigade. Events as part
of the competition. Competition is
expected to be fiercer than last
year when the Tournament ended
in a tie between Hose Company
and Vulcan Company. The three
previous Tournaments were won
by Tally-Ho.
V.S. Tournament
All Civil Defense Auxiliary
Police units in the Town of
Hempstead have been asked to
perform crowd and traffic
control duties for the Valley
Stream Fire Tournament and
Parade to be held on the weekend
of August 11th and 12th.
Gen. Otho C. Van Exel, Nassau
County CD Director, said the
services of the CD Auxiliary
Police are needed because of the
large crowds expected to watch
the event.
The CD Auxiliary Policemen
will be on duty from 4:30 p.m. to
midnight on August 11th and
from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on August
12th.
Boy Scouts of America
Summer Training Camps
A record number of Scouts are
attending the Nassau County
Council, Boy Scouts of America
summer training camps ac-cording
to Francis B. Looney,
Council President.
The Council is operating three
camps this year, Looney stated.
Camp Wauwepex at Wading
River will serve over 1,000 boys;
Onteora Scout Reservation,
Livingston'Manor, New York in
the Catskills will see over 3,000
boys attend and 400 at the Alder
Lake Scout Reservation, a
wilderness camp in Ulster
County.
In addition to the Scouts, Mr.
Looney continued, over 800
Webelos Cubs and their dads will
enjoy a weekend at Camp
Wauwepex. The first weekend on
July 14-15 saw 450 Cubs and Dads
participate with .390 registered
for the weekend of July 28-29.
The program for Scout Troops
includes such experiences as
cooking, pioneering, con-servation,
nature, hiking, a full
acqueitic program, campfires
and a complete instructional
program in the outdoor Merit
Badge subjects.
The camps opened on July 1st
and will close for the summer
season on August 25th. They will
reopen after Labor Day for the
weekend camping in which Scout
Troops participate year-round.
