Installation of new Officers of the Lynbrook Police Benevolent Association
at a dinner in their honor. Chief Walter Waring swearing in Robert Bassalin
new president and other Officers.
Left to riqht ore:
Chief Walter Waring; Trustee, Robert Buckman; Trustee, Robert Bosch;
Trustee, Frank Karg; Treasurer, Thonnas Merrill; Secretary,Martin French;
Vice President, Charles Carafano; President, Robert Bassalin.
Dr. Edward L. Heth of the
Atlantic Ave. Music Dept. has
been a member of the Lynbrook
Public School system for over 19
years and is a gentleman largely
responsible for the love of music
implanted in our younger
children for all that time. He has
had a very interesting and ex-cellent
artistic background which
fits him for his work to a
remarkable degree. Dr. Heth is a
fascinating and modest per-sonality.
He is a native of Grand Rapids,
Michigan, where he was born to
the late Leon and Ina Heth. His
father was an electrical engineer.
He attended school in Grand
Rapids and graduated from
Central High School there. He
played the French horn in the
school as a student who had true
talent and a great love of music.
He attended Alma College in
Alma, Michigan on a music
scholarship and graduated from
there with Summa Cum Laude
honors. He studied French, Latin
and German in school and
showed a natural aptitude for
language study.
From Alma College, he went to
Westminister Choir College in
Princeton, New Jersey, where he
had a Teaching Fellowship and
graduated from there with a
master's degree in Musicology.
He was invited by the president of
Polytechnic Institute of Puerto
Rico to found a music depart-ment
at the school and stayed
there 7 years where he
established a complete depart-ment
of music. While at the In-stitute,
he founded a Concert
Choir which was so excellent,
they toured many places in both
North and South America. The
members of the choir were bi-
Jingual and sang in English,
Spanish, Latin, and French. One
of the most interesting spots they
visited was Devil's Island, in
French Guiana, the infamous
French penal colony where
Dreyfus was imprisoned. They
toured the grisly exhibits and
were served lunch by elderly
former inmates of the prison who
had survived. They were later
taken on a trip by native Indian
dug-out canoe down the tropical
river which t-uns through Devil's
Island and say twenty ft. long
Anaconda snakes and alligators
snapping in the water. It was
possible to see why very few of
the prison inmates ever made a
successful escape, between the
perils of the jungle and the river
itself. Years later, Dr. Heth met
the French guide who had taken
them on the river trip in
Columbus Circle in New York
City.
The Concert Choir gave a
special performance for Dr. and
Mrs. Lin Yutang, the famous
