Minerva Mailing
Draws Thorp Fire
A district-wide political mailing sent to residents of the 19th Assembly
District by DominickM. Minerva, the Republican Assembly candidate prompted
a quickrebuttal last weekfrom the incumbent. Assemblyman John S. Thorp,Jr.,
who called his opponent a liar and demanded a retraction.
THE WINNER: Nine year old Vincent De Scalo of 73 Wright Ave.,
Lynbrook shows he "has a friend at Chase Manhattan Bank" as he
accepts a $100 Bond from Assistant Manager John J. Roseto of the
Lynbrook office as winner in a drawing for Lynbrook Week
celebration.
To charges made by the
Republican candidate that Thorp
acted as chairman of the Nassau
Democratic Party Convention
which Minerva claims adopted a
platform supporting forced
busing of school children and
construction of high-rise low-income
housing, Thorp said, "My
opponent is a liar. In the spring of
1972 when the platform was
adopted, I was not the convention
chairman, Marvin Cristenfeld
was. If my opponent was in-

the Mayor swears in Mr. Rodriguez.
ceres ted in the truth he could
easily have learned that.
"As to busing, arid the con-struction
of high-rise housing in
this county, my voting record in
opposition is absolutely clear and
is known to my opponent.
"I have consistently opposed
and voted against forced busing
of school children. As recently as
April 25,1972, I voted for an anti-busing
bill (A 11591, Van Cott)
which was passed by the

Mrs. Laffey is the wife of Thomas Laffey, one of five Irish-Americans who were imprisoned in Fort

Rockefeller vetoed the bill.
Apparently my opponent
overlooked the Governor when he
wrote 'the entire Republican
party are opposed to busing'. "I
also voted against the Urban
Development Corporation Act
which gives the UDC the right to
override local zoning bodies to
build high-rise apartments.. That
bill was put forward by the
Republican governor as a pet
project, and I, together with
Assemblymen Margiotta and
Farrell were the only Nassau
County Assemblymen (out of 12)
who voted against it. I challenge
my opponent to explain that
strange fact.
"He is so desperate for issues
in this campaign that he has
resorted to the worst kind of
gutter politics ~ using the mails
to arouse the worst fears and
passions of our residents in a
manner that does not become a
candidate for this office.
"I know the residents of the
19th district will not be decieved
by this man. He is working with
unlimited campaign funds in a
• district that was tailor-made to
defeat me; but he has no af-firmative
issues. So he lies.
