of Suburbia Federal Savings &

Maximillian Kessler lives in

Becker Revenue Fight
Goes To Albany
Francis X. Becker, Mayor ot
Lynbrook, has carried his year-long
fight for "equitable revenue
sharing" a step further. He,
along with many other city,
county, school district, town and
village officials, met last week in
Albany to fight the State cutbacks
in aid.
Becker, who has spearheaded
the fight for equality among
cities and villages with similar
populations and municipal
services, has received official
support from Norftian Levy, New
York State Senator and John
Thorpe, Assemblyman. He has
also mustered help from a
number of village officials, and
seems to be gaining statewide
support.
In this most recent effort, the
Emergency Coalition of Local
Governments, made up of the
Association of Towns, County
Officers Association, New York
Conference of Mayors and the
New York State School Boards
Association, issued the following
"Declaration of Position."
"This coalition of local
governments including school
districts is unalterably opposed
to any cutbacks, so called freezes
or reductions of any kind in state
aid to any local governments.
The result of such cutbacks will
be a further decrease in the
essential services to which our
residents are entitled and which
they have a right to demand. Our
local taxing power is already
strained to its limit.
"The coalition is mindful of the
financial difficulties in which the
State finds itself and actively
supports the Governor's efforts to
bring financial relief from the
Federal Government to the state
as well as to local governments.
Many local governments have
temporarily survived the cut-backs
initiated by the Governor
and the Legislature in 1971 by
imposing special levies and in-creasing
local taxes so that
essential services could be
maintained.
"While we are averse to
postponement of aid (rollbacks)
until the next state fiscal year
(April 1972), we can accept this
device provided that the aid is
paid in full in the local govern-ment
fiscal year for which
operating budgets have been
established.
"Since it is recognized that
local governments are sub-divisions
of the state and derive
all of their powers from the state,
we call upon the state to bear the
ultimate responsibility of
providing for the solvency of
localities and the continuation of
adequate support for essential
services for the people."
