4 Alarm Fire
In Lynbrook
The dense smoke from basement fire covered
Lynbrook Fire Fighters under the direction of Chief Pot Ricioppo is shown the business section of Lynbrook and hindered
battling the 4 alarm blaze. the firemen in their efforts.
Fire Depts. from five villages
responded to a fire-alarm called
into the Lynbrook Fire Dept. at
about 9:20 a.m. on Monday
morning, Sept. 20, 1971.
Mrs. Margaret Napolitano,
owner of Marguerite's Gift Shop,
46 Atlantic Ave. at the corner of
Stauderman Ave. on the east side
of Atlantic Ave. was doing some
early morning stock work in the
basement of her shop, when she
noticed a fire had started along
one of the walls of the basement.
She quickly left the shop and
phoned in the fire alarm. The
building is owned by M. Spiegel &
Sons and the particular location
of Marguerite's Gift Shop had
formerly been both a Lamp and
gift shop and the long-time site of
Crawford Clothes, a nation-wide
chain store and familiar to
thousands of shoppers in the
area. Marguerite's Gift Shop has
been occupying the premises for
about one year.
The efficient Lynbrook Fire
Dept. with the aid of the East
Rockaway and Rockville Centre
& Woodmere Fire Dept. actually
put out the blaze in about three
hours. They were hampered by
the dense smoke emitted by the
fire and firemen were treated at
the scene for smoke poisoning
and one Vamp, Fireman Robert
Hartsock from Lynbrook's
Engine Co. 1 was rushed to a
nearby hospital, treated, and
later released.
The special equipment rushed
to their aid by the Lawrence-
Cedarhurst Fire Dept. which
consisted of a High Expulsion
Foam finally brought the fire
under complete control. There
was about five feet of water in the
basement.
The Fire Depts. are to be
congratulated for containing the
fire to the basement and store on
the ground level and preventing
•its spread to both the upper
floors and the adjacent buildings
along the east side of Atlantic
Ave. The Fire Marshall is con-ducting
an investigation into the
cause of the blaze, which could
have so easily been a disastrous
one, except for the fine work of
the combined departments led by
Lynbrook's own crack Fire Dept.
Marguerite's Gift Shop was
gutted by the blaze.
